Hey Imperial! I just wanted to let you know that I found your video about King Ludwig absolutely fantastic, especially as someone from Bavaria. I really enjoyed it! I wanted to suggest that it might be smart to offer a German audio version of the video on UA-cam. The content is really interesting, particularly for people from Bavaria. One thing needs to be said. The goverment didn't just start this whole mess just because Ludwig threatened to destroy the goverment if it didn't take his personal debt. They already had a very negative opinion about him. Even if he was personally against the lose of independence, his rule has probably one of the most important causes why Bavaria became a part of the new German Empire. Basically, Ludwig started his rule joining Austria against Prussia, being defeated in the process and forced to sign a treaty of military cooperation with Prussia. Years after, when Germany finally unified in 1871, Ludwig gave its support to the unification, even going as far as to send letters to other German princes to ask for support to the new project elaborated by Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Some could say that this avoided Prussia a lot of trouble, as the second most powerful state in what is now Germany appeared to be completely supportive about the process of unification and, with this movement, Ludwig either persuased some of the most cynical princes that unification was for the best, while also a clear message to anyone that opposed that, if they tried to go against Germany, they would do it on their own, there would not be an "Anti-Prussian coalition" in Germany liderated by Bavaria, the only kingdom that could represent an opposition. This decision basically ended Bavaria as an independent state without even trying to fight (also true that the goverment of Bavaria secured really good concesions, most notably being able to keep the Bavarian Army under their control except during times of war) and that, even in the time of rising german nationalism, was very unpopular in a catholic country that saw itself being ruled by the protestant aristocracy of Prussia. There were rumors, and it is still debated by historians to this day, that Bismarck bribed Ludwig, since one of the first movements of the new German goverment was to take some of the already high debt of the Bavarian King. Personal letters to his uncle by Ludwig are confusing, since he seems to imply that he did what he did to avoid a war and an even worse fate for the country, but also being very negative about the whole process, even talking about the "satanic policy of Prussia". So, he could have just avoided a war that they couldn't win, or he literally betrayed the country he ruled for financial support of his already unsustainable patronage of the arts. One way or another, there were a lot of people in the Bavarian political system that wanted Ludwig removed, and his behavior threating to dismiss the goverment was just the last straw.

the infamous austrian empress Sisi was Ludwigs cousin and grew up on the other side of the lake from Berg Castle. Her residence would have been like a safe haven for a fleeing Ludwig, not even the bavarian government would have dared to enter her house without her permission. Ludwig was a good swimmer, he could have made it to the other side.
