Glazing is probably one of the best thing Contrast paints are amazing for. Since they’re not too transparent, and stain heavily, they make fantastic filters.
I love Duncan's work for many reasons, but this video really demonstrates how he brings something for everyone. I would have stopped painting at roughly the 20min mark, but for the really skilled among us there's an additional 10min to bring it to the competitive level.
It is interesting seeing that green and brown wash technique here. The only time I had seen in for some time was in green stuff worlds videos and lately I seem to see it alot with some of my favourite painters. I love it.
I'd be interested in seeing that too. I've done cell shading on Nerf blasters, Gundam models, and action figures, but I can't imagine scaling it down this far.
I was thinking of trying it on orcs.I have a small AoS Ironjawz army, and I think I've gone through three different recipes for skin already, not counting the shaman, who I deliberately made albino. The Nazdreg Yellow layer at the end was a stroke of genius. It would've never occurred to me, but now I have to give it a try.
There's Fallout miniatures ??? It's a shame that Halo: Fleet Battle and Ground Command don"t exist anymore, I would have loved to see you paint a Covenant cruiser or a noble Elite !
Do all the detail on the skin followed by just covering it all with a contrast paint. You are a mad man. I am going to find something to use that on. Came out amazing
The only thing that i would consider Duncan, is what type of brush you can use. People should know that these wargaming brand brushes are not a requirement and that you can use regular artisan brushes. Like for the regiment brush i would use a size 2 brush (and more often than not a synthetic one too, which you can get for 2 quid or less) But when it comes to details i usually switch to a size 0 brush with natural bristles. My point is: perhaps just make people aware that they do not need these wargaming brand brushes to get good results (matter of fact, most competetive painters i know, don't use them at all) - and that most of the big wargaming stores are carrying artisan brushes these days too.
One of these days guys, one of these days we'll see Duncan use a wet palette... :P Edit: Seriously though, just watched the rest of the video and the paint job is insane and the tutorial made it seem so easy! This feels like a whole different level compared to WHTV.
Thank you man, been hoping you'd do some of the Modiphius Fallout range; Super Mutants and Vault Suits have been my challenge. I didn't think of the bigger 'scene' celebs even knew it existed so doubly happy it's not falling by the wayside everywhere... just where I live -_-
I'd love to see you paint something from the Nolzur's Marvelous Minatures line! I started painting with them, and it would be awesome to see what a painting veteran can do with them.
love these videos would be great to see some Barons War models from Footstore minitures in the Academy's range apart from that keep up the glorious work! :)
Light brown base + shade with a dark brown wash (agrax or whatever you prefer) + highlight with same color as base then an even brighter tone on highest spots, make sure to use warm browns (more yellow).
Duncan love your videos and really enjoy watching you bring life to your models. Quick question for you if I may. Do you ever use Zenithal highlights after priming your models or do you prefer to just go straight to base colors? Could you explain your reasons for preferring or not preferring them? Thank you and hope your staying healthy.
Love the sickly-green shade of the skin. Do you figures it would work well on other things than flesh? Like painted metal, or even water, to give it a strange and clearly not healthy shade? or would you rather use another method or combination of colours?
There's one thing that has bugged me for a while now: how do you keep your Citadel paints from drying up in the top of the bottle? Can't really close some of them anymore.
You might also want to trying painting with a wet palette. In a Tupperware container put a wet paper towel and put a piece of parchment paper over that. Your paint will dry a lot slower, giving you more time to work with it.
In addition to what others wrote, make sure you're actually fully closing the pot. Citadel paints have this thing where it feels like the lid is closed when the front snaps but the back isn't all the way in yet and paint can still sip into the crevice (it won't actually pour out but might collect and cake on the rim).
Hey Duncan, loving these new painting tutorials. Do you think you could show us how to paint some models from the Infinity universe? Haqqislam if possible please :-)
Awesome video. I was wondering if you planned on doing a Halo model tutorial, I'm a huge fan of the games and would love to get some tips on how to paint the tabletop models.
I have a question Duncan. Why did you wait to do the skin color until after you did all the detail work on everything else? If you accidentally mess up and get the color on something you don't want wouldn't you have to then redo all the work you have previously completed on those edges? Not saying you specifically would mess up, but I sure would.
What is a good paint pack to buy. I've never painted any mini's before, but I'm tired of my bland characters. Completely new to the whole process. Is there like a starter painting pack?
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I can totally see some Nurgle worshipping Children of Atom cultists using a heavily mutated Super mutant as basically a glorified war beast
Oh ok. So when your painting rags or pants that are next to flesh. You don’t need to paint right next to each other? You leave a shadow in between the two???
I know for me, it depends on the size of the project. If I'm doing a solo miniature that doesn't really have too much mixing going on, I just use my regular ol' plastic washable palette because I don't want to waste a sheet of wet palette paper. If I was doing an entire warband of some kind, I'd use the wet palette as the paint will keep much better over the longer periods of time it'll be sitting on the palette.
Must say, you're covering all the model ranges. I didn't even know fallout had a model range.
They're a great range Nickster and a fun game too.
There a two Fallout games, both with good miniatures and the one I played is really fun, too.
Skyrim will too, by the same company

Using the contrast paint on the skin gave a great result. Going to give that a shot with different colors on some orcs
Glazing is probably one of the best thing Contrast paints are amazing for.
Since they’re not too transparent, and stain heavily, they make fantastic filters.
i think you should try and paint a rogue trader/2nd edition model in a retro colour scheme, or maybe make a mini duncan on hero forge and paint that
The mechanic is standard grey, looks like it would be a great base coat for doing nightkin
I imagine a purple or blue wash would look great over it.
Do you mean mechanicus standard grey?
I hope you cover some of the Dark Souls Board Game miniatures, Duncan, I really enjoy your videos!

Love how you show off a wide variety of products and companies, shows that you don't need to stick to one brand to get the most out of a model
Uh, in this video he used exclusively Citadel paints. Yes, he used AP's brushes too, but 'bias' towards Citadel is underwhelming.
Makes me really wish for some west coast super mutant minis.
that nazdreg yellow touch was genius
