Larry Nelson-could make a movie about his life. Great player, 29 PGA Tour and Champions Tour titles including 3 MAJORS. A great athlete and outstanding soft spoken gentleman.

What a great story, and insight from Mr. Nelson. I’ve been hovering my putter for years, and now I do the driver as well...

I was very blessed to know Larry and his family well. I grew up at Atlanta CC on the 14th and of course he lived on the 18th. By age 14, Larry started working with me and continued on to college golf. We'd be range rats on the far right side of the range where there were fewer distractions and hit balls for hours. Greatest pure ballstriker I've ever witnessed. Landing 5 irons in a 5 foot radius 50, 100 times in a row was the norm. If he was a top 40-50 putter, he would have dominated the game. The stories are amazing. One of the greatest men I've ever known. The evolution of his swing and beliefs show an incredible cross-influence of Hogan, Bert Seagraves and Lee Trevino. Yes, Trevino was incredibly influential while Hogan was always the foundation for both of them. Learned the stuff you can't read in books. This is the second Hogan lesson reference I never knew to ask. I hit it high already so wasn't an issue. It may be time God willing to go have a sit-down and cover what we never covered. I do believe I know the lesson Hogan gave to get it higher at will- which I've never heard a Hogan disciple mention and explains a question they've had for a long time. Hogan intentionally didn't write certain things. Larry is a fascinating man, friend, confidant and human being and is sadly one of the most underrated of all time. Larry keeps a stiff upper lip about the Ryder Cup oversight. I'm not so stoic, they had a deal and the USGA reneged on it. With Larry Nelson of all people. Terrible thing to do and a dishonor to the institution and the man. But quite the man to emulate in every way, he's a treasure.

When I started golfing in the early 90's I tried to emulate Fred Couples swing but I realized Freddie had other worldly flexibility and power which I did not so I looked for a player with similar physical skills to me and noticed Larry Nelsons swing looked like something I actually could emulate...that really helped me to get a swing that I could start getting more consistent with...thanks Larry and I also would like to say what a gentleman he was, which was another good role model attribute for me to follow.

Can you imagine that this man won the U.S. Open within 13 years of picking up a golf club? This is the most incredible story that’s never been told Larry Nelson my opinion is one of the greatest golfer to ever live just knowing that fact.

With Jack, two of the classiest winners at Oakmont. I met him at the Atlanta C.C. in 1990 and he couldnt have been nicer to me.

What was it that Hogan told him to hit the ball high?

What a true gentleman...but I wish he would have told us what Mr. Hogan said about hitting the ball higher, I would have loved to have heard his thoughts. I am a 4 handicap whose normal shot is a modestly "low" draw but I have a couple different swing setups and swings where I can hit the ball quite high and/or straight or a baby fade when I want to.

Why wasn’t this man a Ryder Cup Captain? The USGA has some explaining to do.

@@tuckersampson4271 you are mistaken. It’s the USGA that chooses the Ryder Cup captain. The PGA is not involved. Again, the USGA has some explaining to do.
