Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I bought the MadRock Lifeguard a couple weeks ago and love it for many of the same reasons you mentioned. Great finish on the Lifeguard and it weighs next to nothing. .
5 years ago damn just stumbled on this but thanks! Little late to the game but got a MadRock safeguard for saddle hunting. Also to the people saying it's a plug for MadRock check the "THIS IS NOT A PAID ENDORSEMENT" disclaimer during the video-use them eye balls and ears what they're meant for!
great to hear your opinion on the lifeguard. I've been using the grigri2 for years now and I feel super confortable with it. But I will defenitly try the lifeguard out. Nice review.
thanks for sharing buddy you got it correct , but for me as rope access technician prefer to use grigri2 as i feel much safe for the locking mechanism.. but again great review! i might give it a go if i do rock climbing
Wouldn't the slower softer catch of the grigri be better for saving your life? although its a small difference, its more of a dynamic catch so to speak, reducing the force that goes through the system as it is loaded, which may in fact safe your life if the system was compromised.
But I understood the anti-panic feature of the GriGri+ means that if you pull the handle too hard then the handle disengages and the cam locks back on the rope. With the LifeGuard, the harder you pull the handle, the more the cam is held open..
I think they are referring to the same "anti-panic" function that they have with the Petzl I'D and that Camp has with their Matik and Druid. (Check your facebook messages if you get the chance)
You did not even mention how much smaller the thing is, seriously, it is unbelievably small for something with the same features! Much smaller than even plain assisted belay devices like the mammut smart. Our rescue team is starting to take note of these for ascending rope capture and descending single ropes,, and like you said, it's red.
Well everytime I have to feed rope fast while lead belaying, the damn thing's blocking on me so I have to use an atc and probably gonna Return my lifeguard
Gri gri's have had their time. By comparison the Lifeguard is a far better tool in terms of design, build quality, durability and ease of use. The new Beal Birdie is a fantastic choice as well and works with a wide range of ropes. The Birdie feeds rope quickly and smoothly, quite nice. Both make the gri- gri seem cheap and outdated . To hand a gri- gri to a novice belayer is inviting trouble. Bin the gri-gri, Petzl is a washed up company, their products have been getting progressively poorer and poorer quality for years and just expensive trash.
@@eyescreamcake Since you insist pf asking stupid questions. lets roll www.petzl.com/INT/en/Sport/Belay-Devices-And-Descenders stay with me here, it's going to be a bumpy ride. The grigri, and grigri + are defined as belay devices. the reverso is a descender/beleay device. The verso is a belay / rappel device, but not a descender While the 8's the stop's and the simple, are all descender. You with me so far?
i ve this lifeguard, compared to a grigri the lifeguard does it not so good, the rappeling funktion is on grigri much better and also waranty is for 5 years not lifetime and there is not anti panik at all. So at least there are 3 lies in your video!!! :(
You do know that lifetime warranties on are not for a human lifetime right? It's for the lifetime of the device which the manufacturer can set at any arbitrary point based off the wear you have put on the device. I'd rather have a real number for a warranty.
You're definitely biased, I've used 9mm-13mm with a Grigri2 and had absolutely no issues what so ever! The lifeguard works best from 9-10mm 11mm in the lifeguard was horrible!
Why are you using such huge ropes? There's almost no reason to do so nowadays. Smaller ropes are made so well and are so durable now there's almost no reason to buy bigger besides price.
It’s funny that people think it’s “sponsored” because someone likes something different than they do... I purchased a lifeguard and love it. Also have a GriGri 2 and Plus and do r lien either... but love the original. Maybe it’s us older climbers, either way. I’ve enjoyed the lifeguard.

Sold on this. Been bouldering for 3 years hard and about to get my lead cert. I prefer bouldering, but all my friends are doing it so should I.
would have been better to have some footage showing them in use?
I know it's a lot more recent but have you tried the beal birdie device?

Take a look to the Safeguard for Sprat use!!!

I'm not sure how you can say the LifeGuard has an anti panic function?

www.petzl.com/INT/en/Sport/Triggering-the-anti-panic-handle?ActivityName=Rock-climbing#.WOgeJYVOK5o describes it well.
Is it possible to use the lifeguard to jumaring!?
get the Gri-Gri +, its out now and almost the same size as gri-gri, shame it costs around 150$ in USA
I'm new to SRT. Which auto-braking device releases more smoothly for self descent? (new) Grigri, Grigri +, Lifeguard, or ?? Thank you !
Any chance to review the updated (springless) version of the Lifeguard (only listed on their US site) ?
You did not even mention how much smaller the thing is, seriously, it is unbelievably small for something with the same features! Much smaller than even plain assisted belay devices like the mammut smart.

do you have the sprung or non sprung version?
Well everytime I have to feed rope fast while lead belaying, the damn thing's blocking on me so I have to use an atc and probably gonna Return my lifeguard
crappy gym ropes? this happens to my grigri2 as well
strongly disagree that the madrock lifeguard wins on rope diameter. Grigri 2 is much more secure on skinny ropes
thin ropes slip in the grigri2 actually... i find it good with a 9.9
need a shoot out.
DRUID vs Gnome Vs Gri Gri

I would love to see a review of the Gnome, by Ice rock. another viable competitor.

That's a descender, not a belay device?

endorsement. goodjob.
Try the Mammut smart
Too bad that if it fails its the end of your lifetime
I don't know man. This definitely seems like a sell out commercial to mad rock.
Didn’t seem like it to me. Sounds like he really, really likes the Lifeguard.

This is definitely sponsored by Madrock

Won’t let me edit that. * don’t like the GriGri 2 or the GriGri + that much when lead belaying. Definitely prefer the lifeguard.
