Fun fact: A tick pretty much needs to be attached to you for at least 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease. On average it's ~36 hours. So if you are in a place with ticks you only need to check yourself once a day. Also clothes treated with Permethrin works super well to stop ticks. Just make sure to read the safety guidelines on the can.

    • @TF2CrunchyFrog
      @TF2CrunchyFrog Рік тому +5

PRoblem is, even the nymphs can transmit it, and tick nymphs are really tiny and colourless.

    • @shadowprince4482

@@TF2CrunchyFrog I think it also depends on what types of ticks are in the area. Deer tick nymphs are just big enough to find especially after they start feeding. Either way, wearing clothing treated with Permethrin works like magic.

There was a time my pickup broke down driving through Idaho, I pulled over and popped the hood thinking it was my thermostat, I had the tools so I got to work pulling it out, after some time I stopped working and glanced at the ground around me, thick short grass about 6-7 inches tall, I was confused and had to look again, within a 10 foot radius every blade of grass had a bulb on the end of it swaying in the breeze. I looked closer and I kid you not it was hundreds, maybe even a thousand ticks, one on top of nearly every blade of grass with their front legs spread out, patiently waiting for a ride. I only found 8 or so on me and in the cab but I thought it was pretty cool. I grew up in the wetlands north of Devils Lake ND, ticks and mosquitters galore, but never saw that many posted up at once.

Humans react very badly to the chemicals used in the collars for pets. A collar version for humans would need different chemistry.
Meanwhile, humans can safely use insect repellents that contain DEET. Despite not actually being insects, ticks are repelled by DEET. The disadvantage is DEET needs to be applied several times per day. Still better than the nasty rash from a flea and tick collar designed for a different species.

When I first moved to Maine, I thought it'd be a good idea to cross through a patch of forest to get to work faster.
Then I started wondering why my legs were so itchy while I was working.
Went home, got ready to take a shower...
My legs were almost COVERED in ticks.
*I don't walk through forests anymore.*

@MaYkO, I now wonder how the First Nations dealt with this tick issue, because they would have been hunting and gathering through tick habitat all the time.

I just caught a deer tick crawling up my arm. I showered after work yesterday and didnt feel anything while sleeping last nite but it somehow got under my long sleeved shirt. Ive been living in tick country (WI) for almost 60 years and have darn near a sixth sense when it comes to feeling them crawl.
I know a few dozen people who have gotten Lymes, one of the first people I ever knew who got it died from it back in the 90s so its nothing to mess with. I hate ticks with a passion and burn every damn last one of them, you can also toss them on a hot car hood or roof on a sunny day and it kills them within a few seconds but never smash them or cut them with a knife since you get all the nasty shit on you. Burn the detestable little bastards.

When I was a kid on holidays i was walking thru the rainforest with my parents when a tick fell on my head it was really itchy I couldn't stop scratching my head but they couldn't see anything later that night after hours of feeding they saw it. Mum is a nurse and knew not to just pull it off otherwise the head breaks off and keeps eating...eww but she had never actually tried to get one off. Mum went to the front desk asking where the ER was but he ended up coming back and between the two of them some butter knives and some kind of liquid they got the sucker off.
So this triggered a lot of head scratching lol

Male Ixodes ricinus complex ticks do bite and feed though, but definitely smaller volumes of blood are taken in.

This is only anecdotal. The biological or epidemiological significance is unclear or not present. Studying tick hosts, I've never seen this happen. I do wonder however whether males may snack some blood from engoring females during mating...
