So talented and so underrated. Nobody sings the way she does. Nobody back in her time and certainly nobody today. Supremely talented and absolutely gorgeous.
Listening to Dusty sing this is like looking at the bottom of the glass of the best wine you have ever tasted.........the richest you ever tasted, the best memory, the biggest regret that it is gone......just timeless in it's own beauty. Steve
+ALAN GREEN Yes, same goes for Dusty's version of You don't have to say you love me. I'm a huge Elvis fan but Dusty's version surpassed his in my opinion.
Dusty's version of this song is the one most people remember and for a good reason - it's brilliant. She captures the elegence and the sense of lost and longing contained within the lyrics. The tempo is also perfect. Soft and slow then building to a faster and faster pace - all the while never losing it's emotional impact. Her vocals are also perfect. Sweet, dream like and haunting. In short, she makes you feel every note and word of this classic song. Incredible
Sultry, smoldering, deeply soulful & sophisicated is Dusty Springfield's classic performance of "The Windmills Of Your Mind" & that awesome arrangement perfectly showcases her magical mesmerizing vocal...Bravo Dusty!!!
I used to listen to her singing,I was so young,1969,loved her songs, especially, windmills, son of a......look of lo....still love how she used to sing, sorry she had to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Good thing I can still hear her.
I love the way it builds and builds in intensity. She starts out almost at a whisper (ppp) and ends full throttle (fff). Inspired. And of course, that voice!! I'm old enough to remember when she was really popular in the 60s. What a blessing to have heard her.
It was highly praised by music reviewers when it was released. It didn't disappoint Dusty's fans, either, and she made many more of those fans with this album.
Is there nothing this woman can’t do! I keep finding different songs she has sung and everyone is a masterclass of style and technique. We lost much the day she left us.
Genius all over this song. Legrand's music (thank you, Mozart, for the opening), the Bergmans for the lyrics, and Dusty for the unique rendering. She had the guts to go in new directions throughout her career, the tlent to pull it off, and the perfectionism to make each recording the best it could be. In the case of Dusty in Memphis, I think she hit perfection.
Beautiful version. There is such a delightful, sad quality to her voice. Almost like an older cousin of Karen Carpenter or Anne Murray, and I know both 70's singers admired Dusty Springfield. I wish Karen had done more of these types of songs....
Brilliant Film!! Beautiful story! Amazing soundtrack! Cillian truly is gifted and excels in every role. Has since the start. So happy he finally got an Oscar. Beyond deserving of the honor.
No question about it. Dusty's is the best version of this song. Others have tried it but come nowhere this version with the begining percussion. Her voice is so seductive, tie me up, tie me up, gives me the chills!
Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien.........OBE...........You and your Magnificent voice shall always remain in the Windmills of MY Mind.............Rest In Peace, Angel
Love the haunting quality of this timeless classic & "The Windmills Of Your Mind" by anyone but Dusty doesn't make it...smokey then soaring, Dusty nails this great song with a performance this is one of the greatest ever vocals matched by an amazing arrangement & guitarist is brilliant like Dusty...Bravo!!!
Dusty's hauntingly beautiful voice. So sublime and melancholy. "Lovers walk along the shore and leave their footprints in the sand." The way she sings that just goes right through you.
I never tire of hearing this version of the song. I still have the original "Dusty in Memphis" album that I purchased in 1970. No, it's not for sale. Miss you Dusty. Appreciate those who appreciated such heart-warming music to post it for our continued enjoyment.
The beautiful Dusty, may she rest peacefully. Tina Arena recorded a fantastic version of this in 2008, and Tina is a whole other fantastic story, but Dusty owns this one. Simply wonderful.
On this day in 1969 {April 27th} "The Windmills of Your Mind" by Dusty Springfield entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #99; and on June 8th it peaked at #31 {for 1 week} and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #3 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... Ms. Springfield, born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, passed away on March 2nd, 1999 at the young age of 59... May she R.I.P.
A great song combined with a great singing voice is just magic - over and over again, we all have to spread the knowledge of these songs by great artists. Thank you Revolving Internet to bring new people to this performance!
the best i knew. since I was a child, I loved this song, the text, the voice of a woman who is almost whispering. you feel it , how alone someone can be in this world....
Haunting ... Dusty's voice was one of the most beautiful and naturally produced sounds ever heard in that golden era (in my opinion.) Musicality, elegance, perfect phrasing, ... Our very own golden age! Young singers should carefully listen to that quality. Thanks Dusty for all the happy sharing and love you've given us for so many years.
This is the best version of this song ever! It's like she is making up the words as she goes along, she is telling us what she is thinking right now. It's like spontaneous. It's wonderful!!
One of my fav Dusty tracks! i know theres untold versions, but this is the best by far! I love the way each verse hits a higher note, until theres a cresendo,& the notes that only she could hit! What a legend...RIP DUSTY,you must be well chuffed looking down knowing that theres still loads of peps like me who love you to fkn bits-n-bobs..!
This version was gorgeous enough, in my estimation, regardless of how others sang it. It has that haunting feeling, as several other posters have noted, that makes you listen to every note she sings.
I think you are spot on there is something very haunting on how Dusty did it. I also thing the tempo on Dusty's version is also key especially in the first half of the song. What a talent she was
Perfect...You have to listen to this all the way thru! Starts out slow and soft and builds to heights not easy to reach by most. Perfect (ly) beautiful.
Mesmerizing classic from Dusty who cast a hypnotic spell with that voice in this gorgeous song giving a performance that is so seductive and tremendous that it has never been matched...Bravo Dusty and you are missed!!!
Haunting Dusty vocal is brilliant throughout "The Windmills Of Your Mind" & another tremendous performance "Love Me By Name" takes you inside her soul and the passionate plea is mesmerizing & memorable...nobody can nail a classic quite like Dusty Springfield...RIP sweet soulful lady, you are missed!
"When you knew that it was over, you were suddenly aware, that the autumn leaves were turning, to the colour of his hair." Breathtaking, heart-rending meloncholy, perfectly phrased.
I first heard this on my daddy's jukebox full of 45's. I would cry through the whole thing. I was five and having my first existential crisis because of the lyrics that blew my mind. Lol
Mesmerizing vocal magic from soulful Diva Dusty Springfield, going deep inside "The Windmills Of You Mind", the amazing singer twists and turns that glorious silky soulful voice through the awesome arrangement making this timeless classic her own...Bravo Dusty & RIP
Yes, as another fan commented, "Dusty OWNS this song!" I second that fact. Few, if any singers could sound so soulful, so pure, and so perfect as Dusty...without the assistance of today's recording technology, that is. "Dusty In Memphis" is a classic, timeless album. Thank God for the music of the 1960's, and for great song stylists like Dusty.Springfield.
Where does such a wonderful person and voice come from, thank you for the music Dusty, may you rest in eternal piece and happiness, Love yer loads lass. Ray♥ X X X.
awesome...i just love it...i was serching for this song for 2 whole years !! i heard it once at a tv serie and from then i loved it.......like for this incredible song !
Always loved the soft, haunting, husky quality of Dusty Springfield's voice. Her version of this song (and the superlatively sexy "The Look of Love") are my eternal favorites of her songs. I really prefer this rendition to the Noel Harrison original used in the opening credits of the original film and have always wished her vocal was used instead of Harrison's. Love the acoustic guitar on this track as well.
Love the way this song builds, everything about this is perfect, the instrumentals, Dusty's voice and delivery, everything, shame we can't actually see her perform it, still we can't have our cake and eat it, thanks for this, gferdinandus.
There are many, many recorded versions of this song. This is my favourite. So hauntingly beautiful. A sexy reminder of our mortality and the general chaos of human existence.
Really? I love the ending! This is one of the best versions ever! A wonderful composition! I would think most anyone would do a credible version such a wonderful composition as I said. :) Blessings!
She understood something profound about timing. Listen to the Noel Harrison and Matt Munro versions of this song and hear how they subvert the inherent drama of the piece by singing it too damn fast. Dusty slowed it down and mined far deeper the lode of mysterious ennui that Michel Legrand built into "The Windmills of Your Mind."
i am having very hard life right now, some times i need to cry to feel calm, i dont understand this song, but this music always makes me cry, god i love it very very much
It is totally unbelievable that even though Son Of A Preacher Man made the top ten in both the US and the UK, the album got to number 99 in the US, and didn't even chart in the UK. Totally inexplicable.
At the tender age of 12 ~ I liked this song.
At 67 I understand the bittersweet message ~ because I loved ~and lived it.
You know it!
Likewise I was around the same age. I didn't understand it but I loved it.
@@wolfgangk1 I first heard of this song on The Muppet Show.
I first heard the Noel Harrison version at the movies. 1968 Mexico City Summer
I just turned 65, and it hit me in the gut, suddenly. Great tune.
In 100 years people will still be mesmerised by Dusty Springfield’s phrasing of this beautiful, elliptical song.
Nicely stated. It is a superb performance and arrangement.
So talented and so underrated. Nobody sings the way she does. Nobody back in her time and certainly nobody today. Supremely talented and absolutely gorgeous.
Peerless
Underrated by they who mattered not, perhaps.
Don't talk nonsense Dusty has never been underrated, where have you been 😊 loved from the 60s all over the World.
Some UA-camrs think that music only started exiting in 2000.
Listening to Dusty sing this is like looking at the bottom of the glass of the best wine you have ever tasted.........the richest you ever tasted, the best memory, the biggest regret that it is gone......just timeless in it's own beauty.
Steve
Oh my gosh. So well said! And oh so true.
Absolutely perfect way to describe and explain this rendition... Bravo Steve, bravo. 👏
Sure wish I could find a video of her singing this live.
Well said. 👍
IN MY OPINION , DUSTY'S VERSION IS THE BEST I'VE EVER HEARD
ALAN GREEN I agree
ALAN GREEN Jose Feliciano didn't too bad himself
Jose's pretty good too.
+ALAN GREEN Yes, same goes for Dusty's version of You don't have to say you love me. I'm a huge Elvis fan but Dusty's version surpassed his in my opinion.
I agree with you. perfect phrasing, and pure diction as always. I miss her.
No one sings like this! The phrasing, the use of whisper. She really is spectacular
He really is!!!
I fell down the Dusty well 4 years back. She’s incredible.
she is incredible, although I believe Tom Jones managed to add an even bigger touch of melancholy than Springfield's version
Dusty's version of this song is the one most people remember and for a good reason - it's brilliant. She captures the elegence and the sense of lost and longing contained within the lyrics.

Magical treatment of a beautiful song, best version ever!
I love the way it builds and builds in intensity. She starts out almost at a whisper (ppp) and ends full throttle (fff). Inspired. And of course, that voice!! I'm old enough to remember when she was really popular in the 60s. What a blessing to have heard her.
For me this is one of the most well balanced albums I've ever heard. From beginning to end it carries so beautifully.
It was highly praised by music reviewers when it was released. It didn't disappoint Dusty's fans, either, and she made many more of those fans with this album.
Dusty in Memphis is a masterpiece. She really came into her own on this.

This song just feels so ahead of its time. I can't believe it came out over 40 years ago.
this song has never sounded more seductive and chill. i love this version.

My favorite Dusty song...Just beautiful.
Well Michel Legrand wrote this song but this version is nice
Oh yes I know he wrote it. I just meant my favorite song as sung by Dusty.
Just another of Dusty's masterpieces among the many.
This version was gorgeous enough, in my estimation, regardless of how others sang it. It has that haunting feeling, as several other posters have noted, that makes you listen to every note she sings.
