The storm hit Galveston a lot harder than most people realize. A very close friend of mine lives in Galveston and lost the roof to his house and the entire second floor of the home. @@TheMoneypresidentseveral reports including from this channel have said the fire started in an adjacent building (Shared a common wall) and it was originally electrical in nature and electric cables/wires became overheated and caused the fire to spread into the buildout shed. If that is actually the case and it was determined by investigators it was caused by shoddy wiring that was was done by no certified electricians or that circuits were seriously overloaded insurance company will balk at paying any claims. Additionally the Yacht in that shed is forever more stink of smoke even if the the vessel is gutted stripped of all paint and power washed repeatedly because there is always going to be smoke/soot trapped somewhere waiting to stink up the boat. Years ago I purchased a conversion van that had small interior fire that I was going to use as a work van. I gutted the van power washed it inside and out repeatedly and used a half a dozen smoke odor eliminator products, panted the interior and exterior of the van always had a stink of smoke and burnt carpet until the day I sent it to the scraper

@4:23 The hurricane while it affected mostly Northern Grenada...the mainland survived pretty well... what you are showing there is likely from Grenada's sister isle Carriacou. Carriacou is what was totally devastated with nearly all buildings destroyed. Petit Martinique (belongs to Grenada) was also pretty damaged as well. A bit further North, the Vincentian Grenadines were hit hard as well with their islands, Union, Palm, Mayreau, Petit St. Vincent, Canaouan etc reporting significant damage.

Bear in mind that it only needs a single electric scooter battery to ignite to take out a whole factory, they burn so hot and so fast that water has no effect. EV fires cannot be extinguished, they have to burn out.
I see many boaters and RV'rs chucking these batteries in their habitation spaces without a care, although there is no evidence yet, I would expect a lithium battery started this fire, probably a small, insignificant one too, not involved with the build. Please stay safe out there and learn the hazards, people have died from fires caused by these and the number is rising fast as they become more popular.

As an X s up super yacht builder at a NZ yard I can vouch how easy it is to have an on board fire while in the construction stage. We had several near misses and looking back were very fortunate.
I feel for the yard and the employees, some of whom will be devastated, When you boil it all down you will probably find it's a lack of diligence from Management down. I hope no one was hurt.

    • @Gurkon
      @Gurkon Місяць тому

As a ships engineer I have been through several yard periods and a refit. First of all it is not about the fire suppression system because you are not looking at some material sitting on the ground that can be reached easily. Most of the fires happen inside of a ship. If the ship starts burning inside the only thing you can do is cooling the surrounding parts but to extinguish it you need to get the water or the foam (depending on the type of fire) to the source of the fire itself.
There is a different problem and this is either early fire detection or fire protection if constructional work is done. I have seen that many times in different yards and it is the lack of adhearing to certain procedures when it comes to hotwork on or inside ships.
Most of the time there are very small fires cause by grinding or welding works without the proper preperation and safety. A litte bit of quick grinding here just a quick weld there. No fire blankets, extuinguishers and no idea what is behind the wall or bulkhead you are welding at. Very small fires can be undetected for a long time creeping through several compartments on a ship without setting of a detection system. Furthermore detection systems are most of the time dissabled kn a yard so people need to be careful in what they are doing.

The hurricane was only a Cat 1 when it hit the Matagorda Bay area. Pelican's Rest is a nice small marina, but is isn't very well protected and it is right on the coast, behind the lowest area on the island. On windy south wind days, all the boats rock. It would have been best to evacuate the boat to the Clear Lake area or head East to La. or Miss. People just think because it is a floating dock, they would be safe.
Hurricanes Ike and Harvey did a lot worse damage than Beryl, but they were higher category hurricanes and had higher surge.
We have a boat on Clear Lake and the marinas did pretty good compared to the last 2 big hurricanes.

When I was 12 I had a honeycomb fiberglass cabin cruiser I restored and my dad helped me rebuild a outboard for it. It had a indoor/ outdoor engine and lower unit. I sealed up the hole with aluminum, fiberglass and marine plywood. I had a 175 Mercury Black Max outboard modified to about 250 🏴‍☠️ probably closer to 300. My dad was a Master Engineer, Aviation Specialist 101st Airborne, a X plane pilot for NASA and a Experimental Diving Instructor for the Navy and the Army. He was the Boss in Panama Central America. The pistons I used were used and had been in a fire. The motor exploded after a few times taking it out. It still ran, but only 2 cylinders. I was so mad. I paid a lot of money for the parts. On the Lürsen fire: when you say "2 weeks from being completed", would that typically mean total completion, including towels put on the towel holders, or completed to a point where shipyard could be flooded and ship tower to competion centre where interiors would be built to a point where towels were hung on towel holders? I had once expected those big hangars to build ships right down to hanging towels, but was susrprised that in many cases, it is an early build only with the finishing donw elsewhere with ship towed from one location to the next.

  • @jfmezei

Question: in a assembly hall such as Lürsen's, would the building itself be metal and more or less fireproof? Would its "wharehouse" typically hold only parts needed for current build, or would they store parts for multiple builds past the current one?
Would the fire have been fed by the ship being built because of all the materials in it?
Or would this fire be more about the work site itself (blow/welding torches and tanks, paint, varnishes, thinnners, cleaners etc ?
Curious on why fire would have burned for so long. welding cyclinders would blow and quickly burn out, so if it lasted a long time, it means there was stuff that burned slowly in there. (plastics, CFRP, wood).

That threshold may be cost of replacement or such... So when you do a buy out, you are buying whats left, it doesnt make financial sense to make back to what it was, but for some its a salvage of parts to use in other builds or projects. assuming the hull can be repaired, it can become a barge or something else

I wonder whether the loss of the yacht is just restricted to its build value and whether the future owner will also claim damages, which will also be in £10Ms. There will be clauses within the build contract concerning late delivery and I doubt that Force Majeure will apply as the fire was totally in the hands of the builders.
You have to wonder why the fire lasted so long and appears not to have been contained, resulting in total loss. A boat like this ought to have been compartmentalised as an intrinsic part of its design, although during the build some of that may have been naturally and temporally compromised.

It will take time for the shipyard to determine the cause. And you can bet there will be the nation’s version of state, local and federal fire marshals plus insurance inspectors as well as inspectors for environmental and other agencies. The shipyard will be up to its neck with investigators.

Sorry but unless the material of that hull was heat resistant titanium I could not see buying a yacht that had been exposed to that extreme temp. I would suspect that it would be like "quenching" a metal blade and could make it either strong or extremely brittle.

    • @zachansen8293

I would guess it's just because they are ultra-luxury and they want them to stay as such. And you don't want things breaking down while you're out using it or chartering it.
Remember these people think about millions the way millionaires think about thousands.

They require a five year survey to keep their status that the vessel is safe and being kept in the condition required for insurance purposes. A yacht is not required to have a refit every five years.

CORRECTION Grenadas north coast was hit. Grenada's sister isle CARRIACOU all but every single structure was hit by Beryl. Absolute and Total destruction, Including Union Island, Petit Martinique, Canuoan Island, Mayreau. Very few islands in the Grenadines archipelago were speared. The 1.5% increase in temperatures is the consequence of so called 1st world countries and their issues with pollution, industry etc. The devastation is being illustrated in the Caribbean islands - and this is the beginning of hurricane season.
Lets hope all those megayacht owners with their expensive hardware gliding in and out of our eastern Caribbean cruising grounds will give back to the islanders in their time of need. They've given so much. Lets face it all those big business people can afford it.
