Usually it takes Hasselblad 1 or 2 firmware updates to get it right. I just wish they would do this in their own time, before launch. Apart from the AF this is a great camera. I’ve tried one for an hour or so in our studio and I was impressed by the IQ. This was almost indistinguishable from our H6Ds.

@@ulyssesnathanialowen3831 very true, but I have to say that the AF is indeed not good enough for mixed practice. Even in a very controlled environment like our studio with a more or less static model I reverted to MF. It’s probably something to get used to, but selecting the focus point using the two wheels was very cumbersome and as right-eye dominant I struggled to select the focus point using the touch screen. I really hope Hasselblad will fix this with good face/eye detection because otherwise this camera is great. I’m looking forward to eventually replace my H6D for this X2D. Much lighter and easier to carry and operate.

Shooting against strong light is difficult for many mirrorless cameras. Shame you didn’t try it with another brand on the same subject. The Fuji for sure is no Z9 either. Check out Matt Grangers video where he compares it to the X2D. The Fuji misses plenty also.
No comments on ergos or colours. Only focus on numbers, but strangely Jordan left out that the X2D has a base ISO of 64, which should give it better image quality.
The M11 costs a lot more than the X2D, has zero autofocus. They’re about equal in build quality and feel. The Fuji isn’t even half way there

M11 is made for people who like simplicity. It’s old school for take your sweet time shooting. This camera is commercial camera. You can’t compare the two except price. V. This camera is huge. Leica is nice small simple operation. Hasselblad is a pain in the ass to use. It gets in its own way and constantly trips over itself. Yes I’ve used one with Their reps. I keep cursing all the way while using it. I never hated using a camera so much. There is practically no brand I haven’t used. I used to work at a camera store and I spend tons of money buying whatever I want to own and use. And I’m not afraid of manual focus. Shoot I use to use 4x5 and that’s a pain to focus. But yeah this company just hasn’t transitioned to digital as well as it could. Maybe because it doesn’t have the financial or urge to unlike Fuji who honestly pushes how far it’s willing to go to please it’s customers. And no I’m actually a Sony full frame user. So I’m more agnostic when it comes to brands. I willingly have changed to different systems before I settled a bit more on Sony

  • @jlwilliams
    @jlwilliams 2 роки тому +12

Yikes! I wanted to love this concept, especially the leaf-shutter lenses and internal SSD. And, I told myself, maybe corporate parent DJI will reach into its bottomless sack of money and throw some at firmware improvements to make the AF system less, er, shall we go ahead and say useless? BUT, one thing they can't fix with firmware: My use case for this camera would be to plop it on a tripod, hook up some strobes, and shoot photos of people wearing highly detailed apparel, and I would want to shoot those photos as verticals. For $9000+, they couldn't have sprung for a second hinge on the LCD?!?! WTF were you thinking, DJIblad?
Now, it would be easy to dismiss me as an armchair kvetcher, since I'm not a professional studio shooter and am unlikely to spend $10,000+ for this camera and a starter lens... and until recently I would have agreed with that. BUT... I get my medium-format fix by shooting with a film camera. Two weekends ago I recruited a couple of friends who enjoy doing modeling gigs, arranged access to a historic home, and spent a pleasant couple of hours shooting a five-pack (75 shots) of 120-size Portra 800. I had a great time and would happily do this every weekend, except... that five-pack of film cost me about 95 bucks; sending it off to a dependable lab for processing and good scans ran another $85, plus $10 for return of the negatives; and $9.95 for shipping the film to the lab via USPS Priority Mail. Total: a nice round $200 US. So if I WERE able to do this kind of shoot every weekend, in less than a year I'd have burned through $10,000 and that X2D would start making financial sense. I suspect a lot of independent-artist shooters are in the same boat financially, and COULD afford this kind of camera if they sat down and did the arithmetic... but we would expect a much better-thought-out, better-performing package, and engraving the old winged-V logo on the lenses isn't going to impress us enough to make up for the X2D's shortcomings.

You really must want that sync speed to spend 10 grand +++ to get it. Hasselblad photographers are used to manual focus so I don't know what the autofocus complaint is all about. Your friend didn't help the sales of this camera either with his outright rejection of it in favor of a 12 year old version. I loved his comment about how he spends his hard earned money. Workflow improvements. Obviously he is getting the photographic quality he needs to sell his work with his 12 year old Hassy so if he is going to spend 15 grand on a new system, it had better be something eye popping for him to do that. You never mentioned the overall system price. This is a Huge issue with this camera, considering its overall usefulness. I hope you do a follow on review after the system has been out for a while and big H has had time to sort things out. Good job Jordan!!! BTW, I own an old film Hassy with several lens, and still to this day, this is the best build camera I have ever owned, especially the lens.

I use manual focus a lot with my other systems as well... I just think that if a company is going to release a new camera in 2022, it's important that it can keep up in some form with its cheaper/older counterparts. I tried to keep it light and fun, but there were definitely issues that I wanted to address and I'm glad that Jordan and DP Review let me be honest with my experiences. That 12yr old H4D-50 definitely has it's quirks and drawbacks, but it's still going strong...

I really want to like this camera, but for $8200, it comes with too many damn excuses and 'maybe later in firmware' wishful thinking. Plus, the depreciation on Hasselblad X bodies is insane. Swedes must think those dumb, consumerism Americans will buy anything. Yes, the form factor feels good in the hands, but what's the point if it can't take pictures. A properly made apple fritter, fresh from the pan, also feels good. If fritters aren't your thing, maybe try meditation beads.
When nothing is promised, nothing should be expected, and Hasselblad has not promised future updates. Buy this camera for a nice paperweight, if you use that much paper. It could be a memento to avoid even pricier, dumber purchases in your photography future. There must be some utility for an $8200, good looking, lights on nobody's home, mostly useless, hunk of aluminum. If this camera was a date, you might spend time with it for its sexy body, but you wouldn't introduce it to someone you respected.

I already own Hasselblad medium format cameras. Although, it has an excellent image quality, this new camera has two major problems:
1- It is not a problem, but a would-be-nice issue: an optional vertical grip (it may not be for some, but for some other, who shoot portraits, editorial or commercial job).
2- Lack of a thumb-stick to move the focus point around. I would call it a design blunder. Sticking a finger between your face and the camera to touch on the back screen while trying to hold the camera with one hand is an absolute nonsense. One-focus point along with the True-Focus feature is way more efficient and practical.
This camera, therefore, would make sense only for landscape or still life/product photographers, maybe.

At least in the USA the FTC states "Disclose when you have any financial, employment, personal, or family relationship with a brand." So no disclosure with a paid sponsorship can result in legal trouble.
Sometimes the "payment" is access to equipment. I haven't seen the videos but possible others don't want to damage their access by giving a bad review. I think this happens frequently with all brands and people that have access to gear directly from manufacturers early.
That company has had a long history and has been exclusive so there is an allure too, but I'd say not as much these days as Leica. It's likely they can improve on autofocus performance with firmware, but odd they wouldn't have waited to release because something that bad hurts their brand.

This is ALMOST a great camera. Back around 10 years ago we used to argue on forums that the "megapixel war" is nonsense and manufacturers should focus on getting bigger sensors with bigger dynamic range and better high iso performance instead of packing more pixels. Wish this was still the case and Hasselblad focused on 645 sensors not this "APSC medium format" sensor size.

From what I can see, the Hasseblad renders colour better than the GXF. As a GFX 100s user I envy that. However, as modern camera with dependable focus features and better tech all round, I will definitely keep my GFX for landscape photography, it's one h of a camera and with a great choice of lenses.

I thought about this camera for a hot second but after seeing this video that's changed to a definite no at this moment. Many of my photos have backlit subjects and if the AF is going to struggle and I'd need to go manual, then I'll take fewer MP and continue to shoot with my Hasselblad V-series with a digital back. Sure I won't get the bells and whistles (and silence) of a modern camera, but I'd get shots I could rely on.
Thanks for the honest video. It was good to see that for once and was very, very useful.

Just want to point out that as of June 2024, the AF issues have largely been addressed with the addition of Face Detect AF in FW v. 3.1.0, and the live view histogram was made available in version v. 2.0.0.
This is one take on this camera, in a particular use case. But other videos are out there that go more into depth with the user experience, IBIS, and the color rendering, which is where this camera really excels compared to its competition.
Also, the fact that it has a good smartphone app that reliably connects to, and maintains its connection to the camera, can’t be oversold. I have yet to encounter any camera that doesn’t an app or wi-fi connection that doesn’t suck.

    This is my dream camera.
Couldn't justify the expense, though. A Sony a7R IV, while significantly less good than the Hasselblad X2D 100C, still makes great images and costs only a fourth of the price.
If I made my living with photography, though, I'd get this in a heartbeat.

The 16bit raw which is very important fort post adjustment of highlights and shadows, the leaf shutter which permits very fast flash sync speeds and the internal storage are the major difference with a full frame camera.
Otherwise a full frame is a much better and cheaper option.

I am just a guy who wants to do better photos then a phone, and I was looking at this camera because medium format is really something special, but at 12.000 Euros or more I need ALL photos to be in focus. Not 99.99% of them, but 100% of them. If I go (and this is something I am planning to do) to Les Mans, I need to have get every picture, because I may never get to go there again, and this needs to work with sun in front of me, at night with artificial light and even in very poor light. I mean just get sony to fix your focus. If this is less reliable then a phone, then I will just use a phone. sensor size means nothing if subject is not in focus. I mean what did they expect to go to people "excuse me, can you pose again, I got a 12k camera and doesn't really focus, I need 2-3 pictures"?

Love the new Segment! Seriously though, it's those things that make or break a camera. If it is aggravating, it's not going to get better. That is the single reason why I have not upgraded "x" for so many times over and over.

What a STUPID move to abandon a square format!
I have owned several Hasselblad film cameras (500c/m) with several lenses. I have ran several thousand rolls of film thru my cameras, so I am extremely familiar with the Hasselblad system. ANYONE who has shot square would NEVER use a rectangular format!
Think of this: your lens is ROUND, the optimum usage of any lens is a SQUARE not rectangular. Since Hasselblad sold to DJI sadly I would never purchase another Blad, as just like many others, they sold out to the consumer and forgot the pros.
One last time RECTANGULAR is for amateurs.

speaking of the different file formats, to my understanding these shoot a 3F or 3Fr file, in camera (3F is the jpeg equivalent; and 3Fr is the Raw, un-baked data off the sensor); for these you HAVE to go through Phocus to get to DNG, then adobe Photoshop can convert into std formats (jpeg, tiff, etc), as Photoshop/lightroom itself doesn't support the 3F/3Fr formats natively, at the current state of firmware, as of 2022, I am not sure if any further firmware upgrade will change this, but this is what I am aware of current capacities (also the Phocus/Phocus mobile apps software is the ONLY way to teather the camera, not with a card reader, but for live shooting and sharing of controls with the desktop computer/laptop).

Fuji's main problem is color. Hassell's color is much better. But the main question is - does everyone need a medium format? Other than the increase in weight and size, is there an advantage in picture quality? And how good is the optics and how much is there? My humble opinion, if we are talking about street photography - the M-system from Leica is beyond competition with the same matrix with a pixel density as in X2D, only 24x36 in size. Two stops worse with dynamic range, but it is more than enough. But with the best lenses of all time. The new X2D optics is beyond competition in terms of size and weight. But for medium format there are much better quality lenses that either cannot be put on X2D or they will only work in manual mode or with incomplete frame coverage. I don’t know, for a system from the beginning, x2d is an excellent camera for a person with money. But for sports, street, nature, macro, etc. - there are better cameras and optics. Perhaps architecture, portrait and landscape is a calling x2d. What is your opinion?

It's a camera in name only. The Fuji system is soooooo much more refined, advanced, and usable in "real world" PRO situations. And lens costs?? Really? I'll stick with ND filters thank you. Looks like this is just capitalizing on the "H" name.

some 'background' to the scene at 11:50 he is struggling as the H- system, which he is obviously used to, is so modular, and the buttons are adaptable, via custom functions (and the menu's and selections appear inside the viewfinder), so eventually everything becomes muscle memmory(and for most tasks, can be done without taking your eye off the viewfinder), the 'shock' of mirrorless, and the touch screen, and different control locations, and having to 'pull the camera away' to find the button, look at the lcd control panel, is frustrating, as an obvious pro, he is just used to things working, and working FAST.

I really miss the 3.5 jack input Hassy decides to remove this input, or did the designers just forget it? I use this input with the X1Dii for image stacking (through the We macro electronic rail) this input is also necessary for the Miops sensor and the original shutter release cord! This is my first disappointment with X2D. If there is any suggestion or tip related to the above problem I would be grateful to hear it!

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 Рік тому

Jordan @ 7:35 perhaps the problem is lens focus Calibration, as different sensors and lenses have different focus points, aka the "Mirror box distance", and also different batches may have been made differently, esp. with pre-production lenses (which your set might be, as this is what gets sent around for reviews,etc.)- perhaps this lens had a different distance, due to this not being "set in stone" at the time of this review, or as it has "been around " there may have been some damage, or knocking during shipping, which bumped this out of calibration.

Hasselblad died when they got bought by DJI. They refuse to support older Hasselblad cameras and their support is now non existent. These new releases show that they have no idea what they are doing anymore. The lack of live exposure monitoring is a huge indicator of that.

Yes, it's a photography camera. Not having video is a massive advantage as it cuts the cost of the camera a lot (typically these are around 25k) and simplifies the menus, plus the software developers can focus on what matters.
My camera has video functionality and I really wish it didn't.

Now all Fujifilm has to do is produce a wider, standard and short tele with leaf shutter lenses for the GFX cameras and they would blow the blad out of the water. Mirrorless ILCs make this a straightforward thing to pull off and I'm surprised Fujifilm hasn't done it yet as it's an obvious requirement for environmental portraiture.
