    I have an X-T20, with the XF 18-55mm lens. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know! Thanks for the quick wealth of info. I'll be reviewing this several times I'm sure!! I've noticed the video footage isn't too good unless on a tripod.. I'm probably not the smoothest. Definitely looking into a gimbal for this as I'm going to be using it for video a fair amount of the time. Thanks again

    This was very handy Maarten. One thing I found useful was to assign one of the Presets so the Sharpness, Contrast, Shadow/Highlight tone right down. And then choose this preset before you go to video mode. This way the best 'flat' video is a designated quick feature

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Always nice to hear that my videos are useful, thanks for taking the time to comment. Excellent suggestion. Thanks! This is a quick way to set/save multiple looks (including film simulations and white balance) for easy access. Worth noting that the custom setting can't be changed in video mode, that the six items we've mentioned are the only ones that can be changed in video mode, and that the changes made in video mode to the current setting are saved when another drive mode is selected.

    Hi Maarten. Great review as always. I follow your videos since you are the only youtuber that go deeper into X-T20. If I may ask, I would like to know what's the comparison of video quality between Sony A6300/6500 and X-T20. Im stuck in choosing one of these camera just because of video quality performance. Would appreciate a lot if you could give some advice on this matter. Cheers

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words, always nice to hear from my viewers. My feeling is that the picture quality is about the same - but the additional flexibility offered by Sony (longer record time for a single recording, picture profiles) are not exactly matched by the film simulations and highlight shadow settings on the Fuji - but this may come to the needs of your production and personal preference. And of those three, the A6500 is much less likely to overheat than the A6300 and the X-T20. Full review of the X-T20 in two weeks.

      I made a 5 mins video at 1080/29, using Vegas Movie Studio 14.0, it rendered a 449 MB mp4 file (1080). To make the file size smaller, I read about HEVC. Movie Studio 14.0 doesn't support HEVC so I bought a converter "x265 HEVC Upgrade" from x265.com. I was expecting a 50% reduction but the file generated was only 27 MB! I looked at both videos side-by-side but to my untrained eye, I could only see very slight detail loss in some frames. Hard to believe a 27 MB could be close in quality to 449 (I am assuming the 449 is reasonable to begin with).
      Your thoughts on using HEVC would be appreciated. Perhaps this will be a future video?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Thanks for sharing this information - that's very interesting. It has been years since I worried about compression - I let Final Cut do what it needs to do, and then upload to UA-cam where they do what they need to do. I don't really worry much about file size - I reason that higher bandwidth means higher quality and drive space is cheap, and I have an unlimited data plan with my internet provider..
      That said, it does sound like an interesting topic. I'm not sure what Vegas' native output settings might be or which codecs it's using. Without seeing the two files, it's hard for me to judge what the trade-offs and differences might be to reduce it that far.

    • @richardhsu
      @richardhsu 7 років тому

      The output setting says:
      Sony AVC/MVC
      Audio: 128 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, AAC
      Video: 29.970 fps, 1920x1080 Progressive, YUV, 16 Mbps
      Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000
      I am guessing it is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC but will try to find out. Links to both videos have been sent to you via your website's contact page.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for sending those samples - that's very impressive, I don't see any of the typical artifacting associated with high compression.
      However, on my OSX system, the HEVC file will play only in VLC, so compatibility may be an issue. It seems the H265 standard is not quite mainstream yet.
      The wide difference in file size may be due to the inefficiency of the codec used by Vegas for the original output.
      Thanks again for this, and I will pursue this topic for a future video.

    I just bought this camera a week ago, and this post is to only add to the great information presented in this video! Function button setting shortcut, long press the DISP/BACK button, then use the arrow keys to select. Focus Peaking shortcut, long press whatever FN button you have assigned to the Focus Check. Each long press will cycle through the choices. By default, the focus check is assigned to the rear command dial. For the full spectrum of shutter speeds, set the top dial to "T" then use the front commmand dial, make sure you reverse those command dial setting as described in this video, which will also allow you to use compensation when the Comp dial is set to "C" and you're in an Auto focus preset. Why you have no option to set a custom WB in movie mode is hopefully going to be a firmware update, as well as, why you only have a single Q-menu in the movie mode, that which you last used in the stills mode. I personally would much rather cycle through and select the Q-menu of my choice rather then change settings. On my X Pro 2, I simple set Q7 as my video mode Q-menu. Lastly, is the meter disappearing when you are selecting an ISO, that would be nice to see what the camera is metering for each ISO selection!

      Maarten Heilbron - Certainly! Maarten, by chance, do you have another Fuji body on hand? Say a X Pro 2, or a X-T2?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      I have an X-T2, but the X-T20 has been returned to Fuji - the cameras I review are generally on loan.

    • @tubularsensation
      @tubularsensation 7 років тому +1

      Maarten Heilbron - Gotcha, well maybe you have some previously shot Acros G files shot with the X-T20? Comparing my X-T20 Acros G files, with the Acros G files from my X Pro 2, there is a HUGE difference. The X-T20's Acros G has a slight pinkish tint, and the X Pro 2's Acros G is spot-on incredible in the blacks and whites. Just wondering if this is the difference between a $1,700 dollar carmera -vs- a $900 dollar camera? There is no setting that would effect that Acros G simulation to cause that pinkish tint, WB, WB color martrix? The difference between the two cameras is quite significant.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      I went back through my X-T20's images, and I didn't find any taken using AcrosG - sorry.

    Very thorough video and well presented info. After watching, my thought is, "besides a movie dial on top, and 4k what makes the xt-20 a superior movie making camera to the x100f"? Would appreciate your answer/insight into that question.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 років тому

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Good question - but I think you've answered it. It is the availability of 4K as well as other video-specific settings that make the X-T20 more like the X-T2 than the X-t100. There's also the X-Trans sensor, which in my mind, makes the X-T20's images better.

      If you are standing or sitting at a constant distance from the camera, use manual focus, with a medium aperture (F5.6-F8). The continuous focus will tend to hunt and chase.

    Thank you again, Maarten, for the informative review. Do you have any opinion on ease of use - and ease of editing - for shooting 4K on the X-T20 compared to the Sony a6300? While I like my a6300, the dim, reflective LCD is tough to use when shooting 4K, and it takes more work to get pleasing colors in post with it. Does the X-T20 do as well as the a6300 in low light / high ISO (say, ISO 3200 up to ISO 6400) when shooting 4K and 1080p? Thanks in advance.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Always my pleasure. I agree the dimmed LCD in 4K mode is a turnoff. I'm now happy with the settings I'm using to shoot on the A6300 - much as I explain in my best video settings for the A6300 video. I don't have them here to compare side-by-side (and I didn't do the "one candle" shot with the X-T20) but I would judge the A6300 as being slightly more capable in low light - particularly when used with the cinema profiles.

      That's a bit above my skill range, but I love a challenge ... so something like the video I did with Rob Skeoch about off camera flashes, ( ua-cam.com/video/i-44dO5zbnw/v-deo.html) but at a more pro level? Although I will admit I'm a little disappointed with the views for that one. Any specific products you're thinking of?

      Please indulge this "irrelevant but simple question." Is there a image quality advantage to buying the new 85mm F1.8 which I will shoot at 5.6 bearing in mind that I have already the 70-200mm which I shoot mostly at F' 5.6 to F11? Dose the 85mm lens has a image quality advantage at F8 to the 70-200 at similar settings? Kindly disregard wight, size and cost factors in your analis. Simply put, what are my advantages for buying a 85mm F1-8 lens if I have the 70-200mm. I can only see the advantages from F1.8 to the stops down at F2.8.

    Hi Maarten, it's been great watching your videos, especially ,for me, on Fuji topic. I'm looking to buy X-T20 because of value for money and most of the feature set compared to X-T2. Most of information I already know from you videos, but how is the video image quality compared to X-T2 since it reads from sensor differently? And also, how is that affecting rolling shutter?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words. Image quality, to me, is the same - stills and video. Rolling shutter also the same - as demonstrated in my comparison: ua-cam.com/video/FczVOAC-ChE/v-deo.html

    • @Ex4ltation
      @Ex4ltation 7 років тому +1

      The image quality is ever so slightly more washed out on the XT-20.
      I looked at all the available 4k Videos uploaded to UA-cam from the XT-2 and XT-20 and compared them on a 55" 4K TV.
      With this method you can clearly see a difference, however it is rather minute, when viewed on a smaller monitor, or not a few inches away from a 55" 4K screen.
      In the description of the UA-cam Video i added, there is a link to a more thorough XT-20 review, which also features a little comparison between the 4K Output from the XT-20 and XT-2 (Both cropped to display the same frame).
      Here you can see the rather small differences in quality, however i am not sure, if the increase you can get from the XT-2 4K output, justifies spending the extra 800€ :)
      watch?v=J3X_Iq8RyzQ

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      I've looked at the output of both cameras using the vectorscope and waveform monitors in FCP and do not detect a difference - if the settings are the same. Fuji offers several settings (highlight/shadow/colour/sharpness which may have been adjusted to different settings in the videos, and post production processing may also be a factor if you are noting differences. Lighting conditions will also play a role.

    • @Ex4ltation
      @Ex4ltation 7 років тому

      Yeah, you do have a very valid point there.
      The argument i brought forward is however rather anectodal, and it is solely based on one main point of "evidence" i took for granted, or correct, maybe a tad bit too easily.
      In the video i linked in my previous comment, there is an article mentioned in the description, which directly compares the same picture taken from a 4K video taken by the XT-2 and XT-20. And in both of these comparisons avaible in the article, one is clearly able to spot a difference in sharpness and clarity of the picture.
      However, as you said, i am not sure if the author used the same settings, took the crop factor into account, e.g controlled all the confounding variables.
      Nevertheless, i am thankfull for your quick reply, and i might actually be in the wrong here. (I also hope that i am, since this would convince me 100% to buy the XT-20 over the XT-2)
      Have a nice day :)

      The X-T2 is excellent, I've been using it for most of my video production for the last year. Yes, the grip is invaluable for video - it extends the recording time and, with the power cord, can power the camera without interruption for an indefinite period. I have no stabilization issues, as I have no expectations that stabilization of any kind is suitable for video - unless I want a slight improvement and I'm already capable of handholding a steady shot. I use a tripod, or a gimbal.

      I know it's not the same as flog, but this is where you could set everything to -4 and recreate that flat image profile.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      That is reasonable guidance, if what you're looking for is flat - but if you are hoping for a setting that captures a range of data that can be modified in post, I would advise against this. As always, if you know the look you're going for, best to create it in camera, particularly in cameras with low bit-rates and bit-depth. Also, note that highlight and shadow can only be set to -2. Finally, the goal of Log settings is to provide a dynamic range beyond the REC709 standard of 6 (or so) stops. Modifying highlight and shadow settings on the X-T20 (or X-T2, or other cameras) will not increase the dynamic range, it will only flatten the middle of the image reducing contrast.

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      With the battery grip, you can record up to 30 minutes, with is the norm for nearly all cameras. If you need longer, check out a video camera like the AX100 ua-cam.com/video/SHSplI0x6vU/v-deo.html There are some Panasonic models that don't have a limit, like the GH5 ua-cam.com/video/_9R46O4KU70/v-deo.html.

    Do you believe using Pro Neg. Std and turning the Sharpness/Highlight/Shadow all the way down would somehow look like F-log?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      I haven't tried that ... what an interesting idea. There are so many things to try, and I must say, I've never really used Pro Neg. Std at all - images or video. Thanks for the suggestion.
      F-log is (like all log settings) an intermediate step and will require post colour adjustments. In my mind using the film simulations creates (or comes close to creating) a look "in camera", that doesn't require (many/much) adjustments. I usually shoot in chrome with those settings turned down, and find that (for the look I want) I'm pretty close.

    How would you compare 4k quality on this camera to the kind of 4k we're seeing on cameras like the Quismo? (Gimble stabilizing aside) Hybrid Shooters 4k on that is crazy good. Does the Fuji look more artificial than the Quismo, etc?

    For still photography and 4k video which camera do you recommend? A6300 or x-t20
    Which one will overheat fast?
    Does the touchscreen in x-t20 make difference?
    I am only going to use 35mm prime lens. Which one will autofocus faster?
    Mainly i will shoot in presets since I don't know much. I want to buy between these not the compact since I want the quality of dslr not the size

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      In my experience the X-T20 is less likely to overheat, but the latest firmware update has extended the length of time before the A6300 shuts off due to overheating. The touchscreen, particularly for changing focus while shooting video, is a valuable assist. Not so much for stills. I did not test the focus speed side-by-side - but I imagine that except in extremely fast-moving situations, your experience will be approximately the same. Which you prefer will depend on your wallet, which fits your hand better and which style of camera you like best.

    Hello sir Mr. Maarten? Really enjoy your tutorial and really do enjoy this video, but, let's assume that I'm recording wedding, I'm thinking that the(S) that stand for single focus will not be good for movement or is it different to other camera system recording ability? for I uses Sony but just bought this camera yesterday and really enjoy the image quality I'm currently experiencing, shockingly surprises. So sir, please tell me if Fujifilm auto-focus video recording is different.

    Hi Maarten, do you know if the X-T20 handles moire very well? What really bothers me is when I filming (with Canon 5D mk2) myself playing guitar and I see all these moire patterns on the guitar strings... so ugly :( So Im looking for a better camera who can handle this.

    • @sclogse1
      @sclogse1 4 роки тому

      I understand that one can load the 4k to edit as 1080, and still output as 4k. The 4k is unaffected by this. If so, one might load it as 720p to make ut even more efficient while editing.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 роки тому

      @@sclogse1 Your statement is not really clear. If you mean that you can import 4K footage into an HD timeline, yes that's possible. And you can (depending on the capabilities of your editing software) output the HD timeline as a 4K file. While this is possible, you are throwing away a great deal of accurate information in the down-sampling process and then replacing it with some calculated and extrapolated information in the rendering process.
      If you goal is simply efficiency, then by all means shoot at the lowest quality setting. However, if your goal is accurate and detailed reproduction and a high quality image, then use the highest quality settings when capturing, editing and outputting.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      There is no opportunity to modify the speed of the transition, it starts (in autofocus continuous, which is smoother) when the new object is identified with the focus cursor point and is fairly smooth. In autofocus single (or manual) the cursor can be moved and the focus changes when the button is pressed, however that transition is less smooth.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      I hope that's true - they're certainly taking steps in that direction with both bodies and lenses. I have no livestream experience, but I can say that you will get a clean HDMI out from the X-T20. You'll have to disable the power-saving so that it doesn't turn off, and (if you need more time than the battery provides) some way to power the camera for a longer time period. And even if you're not recording, there is still some risk of overheating. Hope this helps.

    • @Viguileras

      which resolution has the hdmi output when it is not recording, when it is in live view, it can be recorded at 1080 either externally or you have to press the shutter release button

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      The X-T20 is always in live view. In video mode, the output follows the camera's setting. The HDMI settings control whether the recording is made on SD or externally, the shutter can be used to trigger the external recorder.

    • @Viguileras
      @Viguileras 6 років тому +1

      The manual says: "4k movies are output to the HDMI device in 4k, starting when the shutter button is pressed", which implies that there will always be a limit of 10 min in 4k even when using an external recorder, but it is not mentioned if record at 1080 you must press the button, which activates the limit of 15 minutes. what I want is to record 1080 long sessions of 30 minutes or more

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      The manual may be correct, but the feed is available on the HDMI port before the button is pressed, and it is not necessary to use the shutter button to start recording on an external recorder. Although I no longer have the X-T20 here to check, I'm confident in saying that it is possible to provide a live clean HDMI feed for periods in excess of 30 minutes.

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому +1

      Not sure I understand the question, and I have no idea what Driving Recorder is - but I hope that one of the following comments will answer your question. There is no way to have the camera automatically restart video recording once the time limit is reached. Nor does the camera buffer record, keeping only the last ten minutes stored (as a dash cam might).
      For stills, the interval recorder can record automatically, capturing images until the battery runs out, the card fills up or it reaches its programmed limit (which can be set to infinity). I hope this helps.

      Thank you - this never occurred to me before. The X-T2 has no time code support. On the link you sent, the timecode input is on BNC, which would also be an issue. I will investigate this further, as it could be very useful.

    • @sv1201
      @sv1201 7 років тому +1

      If I remember correctly, BNC is for outputting recorder-generated timecode, but the camera-generated timecode is provided into recorder via HDMI.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      BNC is a specialized connector, typically used in pro video applications. It's the connector specified for control on the page you sent. I too expect it to run on HDMI - but I guess HDMI can only go to one place - which in my case is the Shogun to record video (and audio).

    • @sv1201
      @sv1201 7 років тому +1

      I looked it up in Tascam manual (tascam.com/content/downloads/products/896/e_dr-701d_rm_vb.pdf) Page 16: HDMI connection to a camera:
      "The unit can be synchronized with the camera's clock by connecting the camera's HDMI output to the unit's HDMI IN port. Moreover, HDMI time code can be received from the camera."
      So, as I said, X-T20 can control record/playback via HDMI, so it's possible in theory to synchronize audio and video with recorders like DR-701D or MixPre-3, 6.
      It would be interesting to test whether it can be done. If this camera is capable of doing that it would bring a huge value to videomakers.
