Other things that can stop injectors working:
    1. Crud from the boiler blocking the steam inlet cone. I battled this for years before figuring out I'd bought a mistreated boiler and gave it a clean out with citric acid. Sure I'm dumb, but it was still frustrating and no-one else clued me into this potential cause.
    2. Delivery clack leaking.
    3. Steam valve leaking so constantly heating up the injector meaning you need to run water through it for a while to cool it down before it will pick up.
    4. The ends of the cones being worn away by use over the years.
    5. The cones not lining up properly due to slack in their fitting to the body.
    6. To expand upon your cause of air in the water feed, you need to check every join in the feed path, and every pipe in that path for cracks and leaks. I did notice the hairline crack in that pipe immediately! To this end I have removed the water tap from one side of my loco and just let the water run through constantly. It removes a potential air leak and keeps the injector cool although I have since replaced the leaking steam valve.
    7. Sometimes you need to reduce the water feed rate after opening the steam valve. No doubt you've covered this before in your videos.
    8. I would be in no way surprised if the alignment of the planets had an impact. Everything else does.
They're miraculous but they're also horrible when they don't work, which seems to be often.

    Bonjour Keith,
This video answers to my previous video question, I can't wait to see the result with a new test.
As you live in a house, jumping from the window should not be too dangerous if you fail the test, but I amconfident in your skillness ;+)
    Amicalement, Raphaël

Oh Lockite. So many numbers, so little logic about how they are assigned.
I've got purple, blue, red, and green (I forget the numbers) for screws and nuts (the green is a wicking formulation), the 603 retaining compound, two of the many CA formulations, and I just ran out of one of their construction adhesives.

Excellent! I was quite curious what you would find.

Re doing the solder joint sounded like it took more effort to explain than to do.

The injector is as mad it's inventor and the machines t was originally intended to be fitted to. Henri Giffard and his steam powered Dirigable.
I've had a few battles with the ones fitted to our Róisín but like you said it's always one of those problems.

Even though you are the master and I am, at best, an observer, I was surprised to see you put two loosie goosy O-rings (insert girlfriend joke here) into the gas tap cone fitting. I figured your OCO (obsessive compulsive order) would have precluded this method. I expected you to make a cone union on the lathe at any second. I'm not complaining, just observing and enjoying. :-) Great video, as always.

The O rings work fine - I do not have OCD at all, I am just personally obsessive when working on projects.

I'd love to see a video on how these things work. I can't figure out how they increase the steam pressure to inject the water into the boiler.

Try this ........ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Injector ......... or maybe one of my other videos:

Heĺlo Keith, I'm not a steam buff but if do watch your video's for the manufacture and machining aspect. What I have noticed is you keep referring too lime scale build up and blocked components and pipes. So with today's advancements isn't there anything that can be added to the water to cut down the line scale?

What you are referring to is a water softener. Or at least that’s what they’re called in the US. I looked into it for our well water and decided to stick with the hard water instead.

If You won't mind, i hawe a question, does those Steam injectors require a minimum steam pressure in order to work properly, or can they be fitted to a smaller stationary steamplant as a feedingpump? (or does that not work at all with that type of construction as the more common model steamplants usualy hawe)

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  3 роки тому +1

I would say on the smaller injectors that the low range would be around 30psi.

Do you have a copy of DAG Brown's excellent book, Injectors Inside and Out? I also strongly suggest looking up Basil Palmer's articles in Model Engineer years ago.

Couldn't for my life figure out what's shown in the thumbnail for the video... Probably generated just at a transition between scenes. Nice effect. Looks almost intended.
