Another fantastic video sir! I just purchased a 7-1/2" gauge CLIMAX that has been sitting for five years and wanted some guidance before doing the hydrotest. Not only do you have an expert knowledge on steam but you also have the most pleasant voice to listen to. Be will sir!
I married my live steam injector 54 years ago. She has never failed to make me blow steam out of my ears. The fix for that was learned one week after we got married. "Yes dear, you are right dear."
Bonjour Keith, English humor is an institution and I am sure you are committed to respecting the institutions. Besides this, I am impressed to see such a small injector run so well, very useful for locomotives or static plants. Go on sharing on our passion, Bonne Année ! Meilleurs Vœux! Amicalement, Raphaël
I often think about how the inventor of the live steam injector managed to think the unthinkable... as you say injecting water into a boiler against the same pressure as the steam used to push that water in. It is kind of nuts and I have to pursuade myself that it really works for the reasons given. Pure genius! I think his name was Giffard but I could be wrong. By the way... many of my relatives came from Normanton/ Sheffield/ Barnsley. Do you know any Halsteads? I had a great grandfather Halstead from Normanton and he came to a sad end after extending too much credit at the pawn shop he was managing (being very sympathetic to poor folks). But I digress... .... Having researched Henri Giffard I found that he came to a similar sad end to my great grandfather Halstead... but in Henri's case it was due to his sadness over his failing sight and not for reasons of bankruptcy. Giffard also invented the world's first powered and steerable passenger carrying airship. And just like his live steam injector, it worked very well! What an amazing engineer! He ended his own life at 52.
Happy new year Keith, from just up the road in Middlesbrough. I’ve had so much pleasure from watching your work, and I have learned a lot from you. Keep up the good work.
In bed watching a few of your videos, I have to smile when you wish your viewers a happy, healthy New Year, I was admitted to the hospital on New years Eve and came out on the 3rd of February after a bowel op, all good now. Great videos.
Shame there wasn't enough room on there for a flyball governor, I love them incredibly useful devices :) Have a happy new year Keith and am still trying to pick up a cheapo lathe I can fix up as the Chinese 6 in 1 lathe thing is just about OK for balsa wood turning and milling cotton wool but it makes a surprisingly accurate micro drill press and my big drill press isn't as fine as the Chinese thing but lesson learned...
Brrr, stay warm! It's about 20 celsius (just under 70) here in Melbourne Australia at the moment, so cool here for this time of year, but back to 40 plus (105) by the weekend :)
I finally found a bottle of Advocaat at my local Mega-Saloon. I guess I chose the right episode to watch during sampling. - It is quite good! I've never had anything quite like it. The brand is Dalkowski with a little baby chick on the label. Very thick, do you warm it? ---- And a Happy New Year to you sir. Thanks again for the wondrous videos.
{:-)))) No, generally you drink it at room temperature, or add a little ice, or even mix it with lemonade to make a "Snowball" {:-)))) ....... I prefer "Warninks" Advocaat ....
Have a happy new year Keith, I do have to correct one statement you made, water is compressible. If you google it you will quickly get into some heavy math and the Bulk Modulus of fluids. Once you work through it and take something for the headache, you find that it compresses about the same as steel. So your statement although incorrect does serve to warn about hydraulic lock in the engine. Ps like the little demon with the book.
Happy new year. I'm enjoying your videos even though I'm not a big steam fan, just a small fan like the ones from a Pound Shop. I do wonder though, can a steam engine be made that doesn't need regular oiling from a can, similar to how an infernal combustion engine keeps its parts oiled?
In the full size, there were a few closed crankcase models, but in model sizes they are not as effective and the small parts soon rust. Stuart did a Number 10 "BB" engine with an aluminium crankcase and the one I had was very ruty internally ....
Thanks for the reply. It's interesting that scale matters. I suppose that parts that are in contact with steam/water could be made of non-rusting materials but twould be expensive and difficult materials to work. Which would take away some of the pleasure of building plants.
Hi, I'd like to ask you a quick question Sir. I'm interested in a live steam boilers and engine and I'd like to make a small boiler myself. Do you buy all those valves, pipes, gauges or you make them by yourself? What kind of tools are essential for boilermaking? Is brazing a good technique for joining copper or is riveting better and why if so? I know that I can probably find answers to those question in other videos of Your's and I will watch them, but I just wanted to quickly ask you Sir. Thanks for the great video.
"I don't know why really, these work just fine...." Because you can, that's why, who needs a reason to work on their hobby. Hehe... My wife asks me those types of questions when I say something like, "I'm going to increase the size of my CNC router" or "I want to put a larger bed on my 3D printer."
Hi, where do you source your steam boilers? I'm looking for a vertical boiler with wooden slats that is large enough to run a Double 10. I also want it to be oal fired and I have no experience in building them myself, so that's ruled out.
Quick question, what type is the black tube you use to run steam to the engine from the boiler? I’ve been looking for some good heat resistant tubing for that. Edit: never mind, it’s in the video 😂
Looks a great set up :-) Is the injector much of a drain on your steam supply, how does it compare for water feed rate against the hand pump ? Many thanks and a happy new year :-)
The one in the video belongs to a friend of mine, But the manufacturers are sending me one shortly to use as a test boiler - and it is a coal fired version too which I will feature in a special video as I fit it with an Injector and a substantial hand pump - I look forward to that {:-)))
No 85, don't ask him hypothetical questions. No supply, no answer. It's like asking how you are going to spend your millions. On the last point, send me a cheque for the full amount and I'll tell you how I will.:>)
Keith Appleton I've set aside enough money to finally buy a set of castings, it trouble is that shipment to flipping Hong Kong is £37. Shipment to my address in Northern Ireland is £42!!! Not only that but shipment just 6 miles down the road to tje Republic of Ireland is £32!!!
It doesn't work quite like that . . . . . full size steam engine have drain cocks to get rid of a potential hydraulic lock which can blow the cylinder covers off, I have seen that happen in a miniature locomotive..

Well what a coincidence. It happens to be Jan 1st 2019 as I’m watching this. Happy New Year!

Need to know more about those book of shadows (spell book) if possible please. Been wanting to make one like those for my wife.
*_Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year to you, Keith!_*
Oh wow! That is such a beautiful setup! Kept so neat a clean and shiny!
Happy new year Keith, from just up the road in Middlesbrough. I’ve had so much pleasure from watching your work, and I have learned a lot from you. Keep up the good work.

Opened up this video and right at the top of the recommended list is a video about.. how a steam injector works.
Happy New Year !
Happy New Year from Queensland Australia, temp here is plus 30.C with humidity at 80 percent. Happy steaming folks.
And a Happy New Year to you, too, Keith - keep steaming on!
I found a video explaining how steam injectors work, absolutely fascinating !
Happy New Year Keith !
{:-)))
Happy New Year Keith, that was a great tutorial. Here's to a 2018 full of more of your eccentric and amusing videos on all things steam!
The injector is a real statement of genius your explanation of its operation and care
Excellent description of how steam injectors work.... black magic. Now I understand.
Happy new year Mr A, and thank you for the knowledge and entertainment you have provided over the last year.
Thank you for posting , I have learnt so much from you !
Happy New Year Keith, looking forward to what you have in store for us this year.
That was wicked! You are definitely The Great Wizard... Happy new year from OZ. (Rolf)

love the sense of humor
Wow, I open up UA-cam and Keith has a video posted 3 minutes ago with 28 views already and I'm number 33! Wooo-Hooo!
Happy New Year to you also Keith, been away for a while its good to hear your voice again friend
You need a small piece of ceramic pipe as as insulator between the injector assembly and the boiler.
Happy New Year from Illinois where the temperature outside is -12 F this morning.
-12 ...... that feels very cold to me ....... {:-)))
Happy New Year to you, Keith.
-12 deg. F. is damned cold. That's -24.4 deg. C. Brrrr!!!

So Amazing❤
Happy New year!
…and may they not inject too much life when dribbling!
Happy new year, Keith! ^^)

Excellent video, happy new year.
Thanks,, and a Happy New Year to you, too..
Happy new year Keith from Denmark

happy new year Keith !
Hey Keith would a small elbow on the boiler admittance side of the injector restrict the flow?
I wouldn't think so .....
Hi, I'd like to ask you a quick question Sir. I'm interested in a live steam boilers and engine and I'd like to make a small boiler myself. I don't build boilers and to answer your question would take too long. Please watch more of my Model Engineering for Beginners videos.
And a steamy 2018 to you too!
Happy New Year Mr Appleton keep up the great videos

" I couldn't find a virgin in this area to sacrifice "
Have you tried your local Magic:The Gathering retailer ?
Hi, where do you source your steam boilers? I'm looking for a vertical boiler with wooden slats that is large enough to run a Double 10. I also want it to be oal fired and I have no experience in building them myself, so that's ruled out.
Often via Ebay, sometimes I buy them from friends.
That engine runs splendidly well - yet you want to re-build it? Perfectionism is quite a thing.
It's just a cleanup to put it back as it once was.
Happy New Year sir!
Happy new year Keith have good 2018
Very Useful! thank you!
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM NJ TEMP: 07 DEG F
Quick question, what type is the black tube you use to run steam to the engine from the boiler? I’ve been looking for some good heat resistant tubing for that. Edit: never mind, it’s in the video 😂
It's just silicone rubber tubing bought via Ebay
Thank you
It looks very nice!
Looks a great set up :-) Is the injector much of a drain on your steam supply, how does it compare for water feed rate against the hand pump ? Many thanks and a happy new year :-)
This injector is a small one, the hand pump is much larger, but there seems to be little in the way of a pressure drop with the injector.
Thanks, it's something I have considered buying :-) Just as a matter of interest do you still have the Castle Steam V6 boiler ?
The one in the video belongs to a friend of mine, But the manufacturers are sending me one shortly to use as a test boiler - and it is a coal fired version too which I will feature in a special video as I fit it with an Injector and a substantial hand pump - I look forward to that {:-)))
Thanks, I'll be interested to see that - I now have a 5" Tubal Cain boiler but would love the V6
3 years! Just checked the date.. almost to the day
Happy new year to you too, sir ;)
But... do you sacrifice the life or the virginity? :)
oooer ...... never thought of that - but I is well old innit - that's probably why ...... {:-)))
No 85, don't ask him hypothetical questions. No supply, no answer. It's like asking how you are going to spend your millions.

Happy New Year Mr Appleton , (2019) 🧐 this i day 02 .
I love you. Have a nice 2018!
Brilliant!!!
10:18 -- Purrs like a kitten -- literally.
and a happy new year to you too.
note: you get better results if you read from the Necrotelecomnicon!!!!!
I will look in my Miskatonic University handbook for that one ..... }:-))))
2:33 - alas... no virgins to be found across the pond, either 🤣🤣
If you need to descale something ask your dentist for some 85% orthophosphoric acid, flawless and near instantly too.
How could a hydraulic lock ever happen in a steam engine as no compression takes place other than in a combustion engine?
When the cylinder fills up with condensed steam (water) at each end . . . . .
... it will be expelled through the exhaust ports.
It doesn't work quite like that . . . . . full size steam engine have drain cocks to get rid of a potential hydraulic lock which can blow the cylinder covers off, I have seen that happen in a miniature locomotive..
Thank you for your answer. I guess it is because of the early admission. Your channel is really helpful.
Lol its called velocity thats how the water is forced into the boiler using the pressure of the boiler.
That engine is quiet..............
