  • LRT officials say construction will begin in 2024. An update on the plan and its design was provided during the Light Transit Project's sub-committee meeting this morning.
The city's director of Hamilton's LRT project Abdul Shaikh says the procurement process of the unprecedented transit system build will begin at the end of this year and will have until the end of 2023 to finalize plans before shovels hit the ground.
Plans released show the cross-sections of the 14-kilometre, 17-stop rail on King Street, where some stops will be placed on the far lanes and others in the middle part of the road.
While $3.4 billion from Ottawa and Queens Park is set aside officials say the design is from 2019 and will be refined.
Shaikh added the city's complete street and truck route master plan will have to be considered in the process.
During today's meeting regarding the design of Hamilton's LRT, questions came up regarding the Main Street conversion plan.
In response to numerous traffic-related fatalities and injuries this year a motion passed to make Main Street from a one-way to two-way in an effort for safer streets. By early next year city staff will report back on the implementation.
City planning says there will be a designated urban planner to work with all projects on the LRT corridor.
