As of the 2020 Census, Amity is home to a population of 1,757, a testament to its status as a vibrant and thriving city in this picturesque corner of the United States.
The origins of Amity trace back to the mid-19th century, when two brothers, Joseph and Ahio S. Watt, embarked on an arduous journey along the Oregon Trail, seeking a new beginning in the fertile lands of Oregon. It was between 1848 and 1849 that they established what would become the city of Amity, with Joseph's land claim forming the nucleus of the burgeoning community. The name "Amity" itself carries a story of harmony and reconciliation, arising from the construction of a school by two rival communities after the amicable resolution of a dispute. Ahio, the first teacher, bestowed the name "Amity" upon the school, a name that would go on to resonate through the annals of history.
In 1852, the Amity post office was established, marking a significant milestone in the town's growth and development. Joseph Watt, a figure of great entrepreneurial spirit, left an indelible mark on the region by establishing the first woolen mill in Oregon. Moreover, in 1868, he made history by shipping wheat to England, marking the inaugural instance of Oregon wheat circumnavigating Cape Horn.
The community's significance was further solidified when, on October 19, 1880, the Oregon Legislative Assembly granted Amity its official incorporation, designating it as a town.
