It was not FEMA, it was a single officer having a tantrum. He was unaware that the Seidhoms (The father and son duo) were in contact with ground crews. He thought they were some randos flying in with no clearance, which could be a hazard to the operation. Seidom himself said as much. After that dude finished his power trip, that was that. if you have seen anything, the NCNG have had issues landing their supplies for people due to civilians inside of the common helicopter landing zones needed for chinooks. the reason they are discouraged from doing this is that it can ruin actual FEMA and NCNG response
Amateurs just showing up in the middle of professionally coordianted rescue efforts is just going to cause delays or worse. It's great that people want to help, but you need to understand that when you have hundreds or even thousands of people working on something, a random guy showing up doing their of thing is not going to help in the big picture. The very opposite. Flying a random helicopter in an area where there are probably already multiple helicopters in the air is not safe. Worse case scenario they end up causing a midair collision. Again, these people certainly have their hearts in the right place, but unless they are in the loop with the official rescue efforts they'll just end up being a danger and a cause of delays for everyone else.

I live here in wnc and let me tell it's still so bad here. The government assistance and response was seriously laughable. And it being unexpected is no excuse for what an awful job the local and federal government did. My father left for work the morning the storm hit and wasnt able to come back a whole 24 hours later. There are areas still without power and internet. I'm lucky enough that my school opened up and the roads are more drivable. And there's still people missing and dead in areas like chimney rock and Asheville, and this is only one small rural county its it's awful.

The hurricane Helene story did not surprise me. It’s all about community effort here in Appalachia; the government is too focussed on things that matter to them rather than preventing more deaths and/or getting resources out to those in need. We have local businesses that weren’t hit giving out free meals to those who need them and regular people pitching in only to be reprimanded by the useless government and be given a FEMA “recovery funds” which are almost impossible to receive and qualify for due to their qualifications. The government DOES NOT CARE ABOUT US!
Ive been through both Helene and Milton, and currently in the evacuated place im in we are not with power. The government/companies need to do better to help those affected.
I live right down the road from Banner Elk and we have never seen anything like this flood. The state was barely helping us, so we had to rely on locals to clear roads and help the stranded. The store I worked at got completely washed out and it was the locals that had to try to salvage it. Completely disgusting that those guys would be threatened with arrest for helping when the state did nothing. Bless those men
My college is in Banner Elk and we were only accessible by air for 3 days. We were able to evacuate because of a makeshift gravel bridge that I heard was built by a local family. Some of my classmates had to get airlifted by the national guard. The whole thing was insane and it definitely has shown both the best and worst of humanity.
CONTEXT: The volunteer pilot didn't check in with aviation control so he can be tracked and make sure that other choppers don't get too close or collide. Bad weather conditions mean some low visibility areas and tracking from aviation control is a MUST to avoid any mid-air colisions and further tragedy. He is being threatened with punishment for breaking safety rules that put his life, his passengers, and passengers of other choppers at risk, NOT for the act of volunteering.
I have a Neighbor who works for an electricity company and went to Ashville to Work on what they could. He said it was almost all gone. In the 30+ years he's worked storm damage areas, he's never seen anything as bad as it was there.

Don't fall for sensationalist headlines! This was one fire chief who got mad. Based on articles, he likely assumed they were some random pilots that just showed up. He yelled at the pilot for "Not being in communication with ground teams", threatening arrest when he was informed the pilot actually WAS in contact with ground teams and the FAA. Sadly he doubled down, asked for officers to arrest the pilot should he take off, and left. Officers did not do so, were confused by the man's behavior, and the pilot was able to continue flights to assist. I'd add links but my last comment that had them was deleted.

I can see why people are frustrated, but also I think a lot of people don't understand how much organisation and constant coordination is required for something like rescuing a large number of people from remote locations with helicopters. Especially when there are many helicopters. You can't have 50 helicopters relatively close to each other safely. It's also not enough to have helicopters, you also need rescuers. You need pilots who can fly this type of jobs. You need rescuers who are trained to rescue from helicopters. Ideally you also need medical staff in the helicopters who also ideally need to know how to work in a helicopter. It's wonderful that people want to help, but unless you know what you're doing you could easily end up making things worse. The last thing that is needed is a midair collison because there are solo pilots in midst of an organised professional rescue.

Hi, I have family in Asheville, literally on the side of a mountain. After a month of nothing we have just heard that they’re ok. Nobody outside is able or sometimes even legally for some stupid reason to help, so my aunt and uncle’s neighbors, those who are physically able, have been on their own for weeks. Certain ppl have certain precious items needed for survival whilst others don’t. The main reason as to why this hit so harshly is because inland areas off of the coast don’t have to worry about hurricanes as bad as say the crystal coast in NC. The most they have to worry about is landslides and blizzards due to altitudes. It’s been a silent natural genocide of humanitarian neglect by the states, the governments, and the country. Thoughts and prayers mean nothing when holding a cold body in your arms.

Amateurs just showing up in the middle of professionally coordianted rescue efforts is just going to cause delays or worse. It's great that people want to help, but you need to understand that when you have hundreds or even thousands of people working on something, a random guy showing up doing their of thing is not going to help in the big picture. The very opposite. Flying a random helicopter in an area where there are probably already multiple helicopters in the air is not safe. Worse case scenario they end up causing a midair collision.
Again, these people certainly have their hearts in the right place, but unless they are in the loop with the official rescue efforts they'll just end up being a danger and a cause of delays for everyone else.

I live here in wnc and let me tell it's still so bad here. The government assistance and response was seriously laughable. And it being unexpected is no excuse for what an awful job the local and federal government did. My father left for work the morning the storm hit and wasnt able to come back a whole 24 hours later. There are areas still without power and internet. I'm lucky enough that my school opened up and the roads are more drivable. And there's still people missing and dead in areas like chimney rock and Asheville, and this is only one small rural county its it's awful.
It's not like 5 whole as States were hit or something and that tons of bases were hit which delayed help as well

The hurricane Helene story did not surprise me. It’s all about community effort here in Appalachia; the government is too focussed on things that matter to them rather than preventing more deaths and/or getting resources out to those in need. We have local businesses that weren’t hit giving out free meals to those who need them and regular people pitching in only to be reprimanded by the useless government and be given a FEMA “recovery funds” which are almost impossible to receive and qualify for due to their qualifications. I live right down the road from Banner Elk and we have never seen anything like this flood. The state was barely helping us, so we had to rely on locals to clear roads and help the stranded. The store I worked at got completely washed out and it was the locals that had to try to salvage it. Completely disgusting that those guys would be threatened with arrest for helping when the state did nothing. Bless those men
My college is in Banner Elk and we were only accessible by air for 3 days. We were able to evacuate because of a makeshift gravel bridge that I heard was built by a local family. Some of my classmates had to get airlifted by the national guard. The whole thing was insane and it definitely has shown both the best and worst of humanity.

This was one fire chief who got mad. Based on articles, he likely assumed they were some random pilots that just showed up. He yelled at the pilot for "Not being in communication with ground teams", threatening arrest when he was informed the pilot actually WAS in contact with ground teams and the FAA.
Sadly he doubled down, asked for officers to arrest the pilot should he take off, and left. Officers did not do so, were confused by the man's behavior, and the pilot was able to continue flights to assist.

I can see why people are frustrated, but also I think a lot of people don't understand how much organisation and constant coordination is required for something like rescuing a large number of people from remote locations with helicopters. Especially when there are many helicopters. You can't have 50 helicopters relatively close to each other safely. It's also not enough to have helicopters, you also need rescuers. You need pilots who can fly this type of jobs. You need rescuers who are trained to rescue from helicopters. Ideally you also need medical staff in the helicopters who also ideally need to know how to work in a helicopter.
It's wonderful that people want to help, but unless you know what you're doing you could easily end up making things worse. The last thing that is needed is a midair collison because there are solo pilots in midst of an organised professional rescue.

As someone who lives in a less severely impacted part of western North Carolina, I am completely disgusted by how those volunteers were treated. What the hell happened to common human decency?! I sincerely believe everyone involved in telling them off should be run out of town, if not the state. There is no excuse for bullying rescue volunteers out of a disaster zone who are just trying to help people since the government doesn't seem to want to.
The part that I never understood about NFTs is why everyone was so surprised by how much they were “worth” and that it was a scam. That is just how modern artwork works. The “artist” knows someone who values literal trash at an outrageous amount of money. Then once they fool someone into buying it, it’s not the “artist’s” problem anymore.

What would they pass off as a fact exactly? The history of people of different sexual orientations is severely undertaught and is integral to the history of the US as these people are citizens of the US, and to the same effect with the ongoing struggle for equity in the US, the BLM movement was a good thing, unfortunately there were bad actors, but I have had teachers who display flags like these in their classrooms who talk about these things and how some people did take advantage of the BLM protests. There is no "LGBT" propaganda that's just fake.
I would be fine if it was a more minor part of a high school classroom (not elementary or middle school). But they got those flags bigger than I’ve ever seen a US flag in a classroom.

Hi, I have family in Asheville, literally on the side of a mountain. After a month of nothing we have just heard that they’re ok. Nobody outside is able or sometimes even legally for some stupid reason to help, so my aunt and uncle’s neighbors, those who are physically able, have been on their own for weeks. Certain ppl have certain precious items needed for survival whilst others don’t.
The main reason as to why this hit so harshly is because inland areas off of the coast don’t have to worry about hurricanes as bad as say the crystal coast in NC. The most they have to worry about is landslides and blizzards due to altitudes.
It’s been a silent natural genocide of humanitarian neglect by the states, the governments, and the country. Thoughts and prayers mean nothing when holding a cold body in your arms.

Whats weird about this is someone went out of the way to make a sexualized version of JaidenAnimations as a chatbot (including profile pic art featuring a sexualized depiction of her cartoon self.) and that number is the amount of chats that have been done with her.

And yet we still have plenty of clowns out there who will legit push back against regulations and laws because they would "inhibit scientific progress." Or they'll parade the good things that AI can do as an excuse to outright ignore the harm it's done/still doing.

I went to Asheville to visit my grandparents the week the hurricane hit, when we woke up in the morning my family decided we needed to go home, and since we weren't with my grandparents at the time (we were staying at their guest house) we had to go through south Carolina just to get to Atlanta cuz we were flooded in and almost died going up and down a mountain just to get to south Carolina, if their wasn't someone infront of us, I doubt we would have made it
