I'd say you two have really understood the essential spirit of Roskilde. There IS an Orange feeling and there IS a Roskilde blues.
My 16th time coming all the way from Finland this year and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. The festival doesn't just get all the big names and something in between. No, the sheer quality of the small artists playing there is just something else. It truly is a great celebration of music. A culture instition rather than a regular festival. Go for the ethiopian oasis chanting ensemble or the argentinian female-anorcho-punk band, because that just might be the most amazing thing you see all day.
And the volunteers really are the heart of the festival. Hoping you still have the urge to come, because by this video I'd say you fit so well in.
All the best from Helsinki and see on the grass in 6 days.

Roskilde is without a doubt the most well-organized festival I've been to. I start my vacation every year as a volunteer at the festival and today I bring my whole family, all volunteers too. It's a great experience!
The first time I went was in 1982 and it's still the same orange feeling I have every year, as way back when. 😃

It is not just the Festival's own profit that goes to NGOs. Local (sports) clubs organise most of the volunteer work and these clubs gets paid per volunteer. For many clubs the Roskilde Festival is their main income.

Love that you got to experience a small glimpse of Roskilde Festival! I myself have lived in Roskilde my whole life and have been been to the festival for the past 20years, and honestly for the first 10+ years I barely saw a single concert, the camp days Saturday-Thuesday is the main reason I'm there :D there are always events going on around the campsite, and you can be sure to see a lot of Ølbowling going on everywhere.

Have never been to Roskilde Festival - but back in the day there was a festival on fyn called Midtfyns Festival. Where I was a volunteer and I had the concert experience with R.E.M. just magical in warm sommer rain
This year I went to Heartland Festival @ Egeskov. Went there for Robbie Williams, but had a monumental blast with the Annika Aakjær, Sergio Mendez and Jack Johnson.
Heartland Festival is my new go to festival

Now you need to try Smukfest in Skanderborg, and see what that's like, I'd like to hear how or if you would like the theme "Music and Beech Trees" it's next week, so maybe it's impossible to get a tickets now. But next year maybe, and it also does charity, and has volunteers build it up. And taking it down. After so the area is spotless, and if you did not know of the festival, there isn't a trace of the festival after.

I really don't go to festivals or concerts, because of my health. But I live 200m from a park, Lunden, in Horsens, where there are 5-7 concerts each year.
Dizzy Mizz Lizzy was playing there, at the last concert or maybe the one before the last, and I was dying wanting to go there!

My debut was in 1980. Carlos Santana was fan-fåking-tastic. Joan Armatrading was a disappointment, we couldn't hear her 😢
It rained from Thursday to Monday, well... when it wasn't raining it was pissing down 🙄
I was 16 when I went, but when I came back home, I'd matured to at least 18 👵
and I had become a woman of the WORLD 😇
I had survived Roskilde and was ready to leave the nest 🤣
Edit OMG - I just looked up the ticket prices then - we paid DKK 110 for the tickets... for all 4 days 🤣

    Roskilde [ros-keel*-le] = Roar's Kilde / Well ( OE cwylla ! )
According to legend this Roar is the Danish King Hrotgar of Beowulf fame ( Old English epos set in the 6th century ), who had his royal seat in the nearby Lejre (village) / Ledre [ lethre] / OE Hletre ( lejr = camp ).

Roskilde festival is just a good and versatile festival with something for every taste. Here in my area we also have a local festival which only holds 13,000 spectators and 2,000 volunteer helpers. The profit is distributed to the associations that come with the helpers. It could be the Football Club. The local Karate club which in this way earns a little for the club fund. Volunteer helpers are very common in Denmark. our local festival even has a children's area where soloists perform for children, meanwhile mum and dad can go up on the big stage and watch a concert. meanwhile, their children can be safely and safely supervised in the children's area. Of course, they must be old enough to be self-reliant. The festival is completely sold out year after year.

    I went in 2007 when I was around 30.
That was the wettest Roskilde ever, to my knowledge, and I ended up going home before the music really started.
Sleeping in a cold wet tent, with constant rain, mud everywhere, and gross toilets, was outside of my comfort level.
Maybe if I was there with a camper, or had other sleeping arrangements nearby, I might do it, but doing it "like the young people", clearly isn't for me :p

    • @GarmrsBarking
      @GarmrsBarking Рік тому

I was there in 97 when it was the wettest year so far then... and I was there in 07 which holds the current record... 97 was bad as it came as a surprise as it was only my third year and the previous ones there had been drought...
when 07 came around we were ready... we dug drains, spread wood chips throughout the camp, pavilion tent covered in tarpaulins and everything was tied down with cords and pegs... and at that time I had stopped taking a tent with me (slept in the camp's pavilion tent)... I even had dry clothes with me back home afterwards ...

    • @Valjean666dk
      @Valjean666dk Рік тому

@@GarmrsBarking We got there on tuesday, if I remember correctly.
On wednesday we "smuggled" in several bags of wood chips, because they wouldn't allow them in at first.
And we erected a pavilion in our shared space.
      A rather flimsy one.
I think it was wednesday, when it started raining around 3 pm, and at 3 am, it had been constantly going.
When we got up in the morning, the pavilion had simply folded, because of all the water.
I think it was past noon on thursday I decided that I wasn't having fun, and left with my basics.
I left my tent, to the joy of another guy in the camp, because his tent would fold from the rain as well.
So he could take over mine instead.

Went back in 1994 and 1997. I saw Bjork on white stage in 94. Sadly the rest of the music is a bit of a blur, but that is my own fault. I do remember Etta Cameron at some point though. I stayed at the camp a lot. There was so much mud, especially in 97. It was so hard to get any where. in 94 the sun came out and baked the mud, so it was this strange wobbly ground. Both were great experiences. sitting in my little tent cooking Indian food on a camping primus. (Not sure what it is in English.), cause my boyfriend and I didn't have money to buy food at the shops, so I cooked instead. People would come over cause of the smell and ask if we had extra. We did. :)

The Orange stage(Canopy) isn't the biggest stage, or tent. The tent itself has been changed a few times, but they keep the colour and shape. And once every -nth year, they tear it up, and sell it parts, like wallets, or keyhanger, and stuff. I believe that Esben Danielsen(former speaker for RF) was one of the people the people who started the Orange Feeling, around 2009-ish. The blue feeling has been going on for many years(amongst people), but this is the first year the app has changed colour.
The festival is very international, this year I met people from California, Slovakia, Australia, and a friend from Estonia was also there. I also heard germans, and swedes/norwegians, but it would be weird if they weren't there. The station, or trinbræt(because its so small and there's neither tiles, concrete or asphalt, or any buildings)was made back in 97, which also was my first year at the festival, as a guest.
Over at Vor Frue(south of N area) is Håndværker Byen, which is where all the trade skills are, carpenters, electricians, IT crowd(no not those), plumbers, and a rental place for everyday things that the offices need to borrow/rent, during the festival. Its usually open 2 weeks before the festival starts, and very busy

Other volunteers even work before or after the festival itself, e.g. setting things up - they have the entire festival just free to roam around without needing to be on shifts.
