- If I Didn't Have A Dime by The Furys, a 1964 release on the Liberty label # 55719. Recorded as well by Gene Pitney in 1962 as "If I Didn't Have A Dime (To Play The Jukebox)". Written by Russell & Medley, arranged by Jack Nitzsche and produced by Jimmy Mack (James McEachin). The flip side is Dream.
Perhaps of interest, a song written by James M. Smith (aka PJ Proby) "Anything for You" was recorded by The Furys and released in 1964 on the World-Pacific label.
This is a magnificent version of this song. Sounds like a major production effort. Simply outstanding!😊😊😊
Gene Pitney passed away on this date in 2006 at age 65. {Apr. 5th}
May he R.I.P.
{Personally; this was my favorite song by Mr. Pitney}...
@garymichael1950 I've found two lineups for The Furys on various websites. The first was Jerome Evans (baritone lead), with Robert Washington, Melvin White, George Taylor, and Jimmy Green. The other was Jerome Evans (baritone lead), with Charles Jackson (tenor), Tony Allen (tenor), and Jimmy Green (tenor). Everything I've read says that Jerome Evans was always the lead singer in the group.
Thanks for the info HurtClassic !! Wow..this really is an excellent version! Does sound like it may have inspired Willie DeVille!
Excellent recording .
I have another version on columbia records by Ron Moody and the Centaurs.
I LOVE it! Much better than the Gene Pitney version in my opinion.
You are nuts
Furey Brothers/Finbarr are excellent at the Irish and country and irish and folk but obviously they - like Johnny Mc Evoy - had roots in the Showband era and this is excellent. They should have kept up more of this style too.
Not the same band
I belive BOB COLLINS & THE FABULOUS FIVE DID THE BEST VERSION EVER.
That lead voice sounds very familiar....anyone know who it is?
Have a listen to "The Cats" rendition.
harberguk ....I checked out the "Cats ".....it is very fine..and then I went on and listened to more " Cats " recordings....they are a very talented group......thanks for the recommendation....it is a very worthwhile discovery .
Tap on my profile photo....maybe you will discover some new worthwhile talents among my public Utube.playlists .
Where are the "Furies" from ? Are they a beach band ?
this is an interesting version, but I like Gene Pitneys and the Cats versions better.
Is that Willie Deville???
NOOOOOO !
Sadly, the generation of today have no idea how to write, and make music. Juke Box play's music which mean's the old box is no more. If only our youth of today weren't stuck on stupid.
