    Haydn's music often has an unbelievably sentimental quality which underlies it in a subtle way. The mask of it, simultaneously, is full of life and fun. This combination makes it the most wholesome, sweet, and fulfilling listening experience I know of.

    Historically Informed Performance - Pitch:
    Modern performances of 'baroque' music on 'original' instruments are usually played at A-415, although there was no standard pitch in 17th & 18th century Europe. A-392, A-409, and higher pitches were used in France, depending on the date and type of music. Handel's tuning fork (London, 1751) is A-422.5. By 1769 (the date of this Haydn violin concerto) the pitch in Esterhazy was likely A-420-422. In 1780, in nearby Vienna, Mozart's piano maker, Stein, used an A-421.6 tuning fork. In 1789, the Viennese woodwind maker, Frederich Lempp, advertised his instruments at A-430 - the pitch typically used for modern performances of 'classical' music on 'original' instruments. Musical pitch continued to rise, until by 1930's A-440 had become an informal standard in Europe & US, although symphony orchestra now often tune to A-441-445.

    I knew all about Joseph Haydn even studying the classical era in which he wrote much of his famous works but for some reason never listened to anything he had written. I mean they said he was a genius wrote over 100 symphonies and the princes own personal composer yet I still never thought of listing to some of his works. Anyway I'm glad I found this it is really beautiful. Thanks.

      Ya, I know what you mean about Haydn, He's so famous/well documented, & he has so much music, but for some reason, I barely every listen to him. I personally, find his music to be "Boring", & I think it has to do with the fact that its SO correct & perfect. I understand that he's one of the great's, & that it's also likely that my musical intelligence is not high enough to enjoy him the way others do. I generally listen to Bach, Scarlatti, Monteverdi, Fux, Paganini, & Mendelssohn, etc., but I know that list will grow to include all the greats, including Haydn, once I understand them & appreciate them.

      Sources of this concerto are a bit sketchy, according to Henle, so it could be missing from the score. I certainly don't think it's an inadvertent error on the part of the players, and I think D# works very well (it's harmonically fine). I only commented because I've performed this work, and so it jumped out, as a rather nice surprise.

      James Ngo Haydn lived from 1732-1809... pretty sure he was a classical era composer. Perhaps during the earlier stages of his life, baroque tuning was used?

    • @twinicebear775
      @twinicebear775 5 років тому

      Haydn was a Classical Era composer. He's literally the definition of Classical Genre (along with Mozart, but Haydn came first).

      @twinicebear775 5 років тому

      They're probably using A = 423. That's the tuning that was used at the time of Mozart and Haydn

      @Philip Kasimir well I've had a history with music since age 5. I just don't know a lot of music theory or terminology. I can play well and I even sometimes compose music of my own.

      Tyler Randall I know I’m late from the time you posted this comment. It’s likely a different arrangement and even if it wasn’t, the soloist and ensemble can make decisions to interpret it differently than what’s on the page. :) music isn’t always what’s on the page in front of you, it’s about the ensemble and the creativity and the interpretation.
