Yeah I agree it’s probably best to start beginners off with hands up, mostly because we all know 99% of beginners will have hands low especially when tired and you honestly couldn’t have a worse habit then that so best eliminate it before it even starts imo. Though simple his point about it being fine as long as it’s for a reason is just as good if not better as long as they take that as gospel and not just half ass it otherwise they gonna have that brain knocked around pretty bad.

What he said stands very true, if the best athletes of all time didn’t take risks they’d still be average.

Coach is trying to say worry about your style, when its time to worry about your style. When I was little people were just coming after you for wanting to learn boxing. Hands up helps you understand getting launched at. This is how you learn to be comfortable when getting punched.

@@jackdb4264yeah, everything they do even just stepping into the ring is by definition a risk. Throwing a punch even for the most skilled to ever do it is a risk, you literally cannot fight and beat another man in the ring if you just play it safe and try to never risk anything.

As someone who used to box my couch made us spar with our hands down and fouced on head movement and it's so much easier with your hands down

For me I never want my head to be square when they hit me, as long as I’m moving away they can’t hurt me too bad. Only thing to watch out for is kicks but I’m tall so I have a huge advantage

I think the old “hands up” technique was really about building body awareness and endurance. The average person has very little of both of these things so using this as a foundation would be useful as they develop going forward. Raising your hands takes energy and building those muscles and creating that reflex is essential in any kind of martial art but this man is LEGIT! I love the willingness of flexibility. It shows he’s a good teacher.

Its the same rule in every profession
    Learn the rules FIRST
THEN you learn how to break them
    For maximum effect
