- It all started with a simple breakfast order. But when it comes to sandwiches, nothing is ever simple.

Now I realize the talent of Letterman.
Watching this makes me miss Letterman even more
Love seeing Rupert again!
I was really hoping they would blame the 'new cook' who would turn out to be letterman.
+Fridge Magnet lol you're smarter than the writers.
NOW YOURE TALKING !!!...
As brilliant as that is it would never happen, but they could still pull it off with someone else like Stewart
@@chase-bank I would love a running gag of Jon Stewart popping up doing random menial jobs in skits like this.
That would have been hilarious
I know its a joke. I know it was written to be awkward, but there was no magic like Letterman and Rupert had. I feel that’s what made it uncomfortable. Come back Dave!
After he pointed to the bacon and lettuce, I thought he was going to point to the bread and say "toast."
this bit is severely undercut by the fact that there clearly is a slice of tomato on that sandwich
+Peter Egan Yeah, strange bit. There's totally tomato on that sandwich. If there's anything missing from that sandwich, it's the Q-quality of his show.
+Per S Yeah you can even see a tomato seed on it
+Peter Egan except there wasn't
it looks like that's just more bacon...considering he's the one who ATE the sandwich you can probably trust that...stop trying to poke holes at nothing
even if thats bacon on the bottom.. gotta make sure its a photo that lacks the possibility. good bit regardless.
For everybody complaining that this remote was awkward, that's the whole point. Rupert's been on the Late Show since the 90s, his whole shtick is that he's a bit awkward and ambivalent towards the bits. Hopefully we'll see more of him in the future.
This one seems to be about his business not being of high quality and that isn't on.
This is for people who are familiar with the character Stephen Colbert. I thought it was funny.
He's not awkward, just shows zero emotion
@@fseesauras But Colbert is doing a character anymore, that ended when he left Comedy Central. He's just being himself now, which has turned out to be rather unfunny.
Timothy Graham I agree. Unfortunately Colbert is the person making this bit awkward. It seems mean spirited, even if it isn’t intended to be so. Not to mention, the whole premise is not that funny or even original.
No, if there's one thing that we know in this world, it's that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
:)
Rupert Jee! Happy to see Stephen paying Homage to Letterman.
Always considered BLT a lunch sandwich.
+Matthew Schell I've always considered sandwiches a lunch thing full stop. Is sandwiches for breakfast an America thing or something? It sounds weird. Next thing someone will tell me they have cereal for lunch.
+ayatollahrocknrolla Cereal for lunch, yes. But only when getting up so late that lunch becomes breakfast.
+Matthew Schell I've never considered one for breakfast myself, but now that the idea is out there I approve!
+Jonathan Cormier I had a friend who insisted whatever the first meal you eat in the day is breakfast (breaking your fast I guess) but it never made sense to me because why would people say "I skipped breakfast"?
Yep. I have a egg sandwich every morning, maybe even tuna some days.
Someone heard "extra tomato", and probably wrote "x tomato", and then whoever prepared it assumed it meant "no tomato". lol
Any skit that brings back Rupert Jee's Hello Deli on the Late Show is a great skit.
is that not a slice of tomato under the lettuce? i mean it's not a lot but it's there
Yeah, there was tomato on that sandwich. Kinda made the whole skit senseless. Think they could have at least taken the tomato off the sandwich before taking that picture.
That's b pretending to be t, g.
+D Chan Yes, you can even see the seeds of the tomato if you look close.
+HQMatt Ha!
i think it's bacon
Man, I felt sorry for Rupert.
It was all planned in advance. Rupert's doing great.
@@dianewinters8628 It wasn't questioned if this was planned or not. Of course it is. But they made him look very bad.
I really want letterman to be a guest soon
I think Dave is on Conan's side.
@@xzabath1 What does that even mean? Conan and Colbert support each other. There are no sides to be on.
Colbert has his moments, but this was just brutal. I need to watch a Letterman/Rupert sketch now to wash the taste of whatever this was out of my mouth. Rupert, you deserve better.
Yes!!! This skit was not funny. I felt badly for Ruppert. He's such a nice man.
@@funnyfaceaz it's difficult enough to see Rupert so old (makes me feel old too!!!) but to have Colbert come in and mock him is just cringe. Love you Rupert!
Nothing like going after a beloved character like Rupert for "laughs"...
Ohh Letterman received his sandwiches without Tomato. I think Stephen needs to adjust
lettuce is just crunchy water ...
Now that's just offensive to the flavor explosion that is standard tap water.
... and water is just 🅱️oneless milk
I love Colbert but that was not funny at all. I cringe a little.
This isn't close to cringe
@@twocentzzzYou’re right it’s beyond bring.
so people just see Stephen Colbert on the street and keep walking?
Yes. It's New York City.
New Yorkers don't give a fuck.
+megha sharma Jaded New Yorkers, what can you do?
+megha sharma Am i the only one who saw the bodyguards standing on the street?
haha. New Yorkers don't seem to have a good rep. here :D and BLACK_WOLF I just saw the bodyguard too. That might explain the lack of reaction from people
More Hello Deli please...😂
Ripert hahaha oh the good ol' times, I wish dave made a cameo.
I am sorry..sticking to conan for the remotes ..that was awkward and not funny
This would've been funny if it were Letterman doing the bit.
"And the potassium is good for, ya know, my...
potassium stuff."
10/10 average U.S nutritional knowledge.
Haha nice to see Rupert still on the show.
THE TOMATO IS RIGHT THERE! I CAN SEE THE TOMATO SEED OOZING OUT
it would have been funnier if Rupert offered another BLT to deliver....
Stephen would return to the show and wait for the sandwich...
Rupert would walk in with the food, maybe on a silver platter....
Lid is lifted to reveal a BLT with a whole tomato..
Then Rupert would shout "SUCK IT, COLBERT" and walk off stage
That's what would have happened if Dave was there!
"How does 'Sorry' put tomatoes on my sandwich?" Sounds like something my mom would say.
Yeah that was out of line.
I can't believe Stephen wasted so much thyme on this. And just so he could vine about tomatoes. He's going to work extra hard if he wants to ketchup to his competition and apeel to a wider audience.
+KingOfMadCows We talked about this, dad.
***** It's a pun. Notice how I also said "thyme" instead of "time," "ketchup" instead of "catch up," and "apeel" instead of "appeal."
+mprulez no it should be wine. thank u.
Yes
+Aka Dua no. Vine is a pun replacement for whine not wine
His assistant is cuuuuuuuuuuttteeee
I was hoping Dave would be the one working the grill.
We feel the same way about him, Rupert. Class? Nope. Tact? Nope. Funny? Well....he tries.....I think.
I did a search for Late Show & Rupert and this was recommended. You should have countered "there's something very important missing from this COMEDY sketch..."
We need more bits with Rupert Jee please
Super awkward...funny remote idea but tone the stern attitude down, man.
It was staged
It's a bit
I can't believe he made The Paul Shaffer into the Cobert! lol
That was stupid...
i know its staged, but Steven being mean to someone in food service just isn't funny. There are people who actually get this upset.
+duckqueak But that's precisely the point. He's poking fun at the people who do that shit. The guy in the restaurant is an actor who regularly appears in Colbert bits-so no, he's not actually being mean to someone in food service-and the punch line that really brings the satire home is that he is easily placated by free chips. It's actually a biting indictment of our "the customer is always right" bullshit that turns people into self-entitled pricks. And I think Stephen is poking fun at himself by portraying himself (ostensibly as "himself" and not his blatantly pompous character) in that way. It's actually pretty insightful, if you think about it.
+ludwig van biteme huh, i didnt think about it like that. That guy looked so real lol.
He's not an actor. That guy is the actual owner of the Hello Deli. www.hello-deli.com/faqs.php
@@petitequinte rupert G owns that Deli.
MORE REMOTES!
Classic Rupert! Ahh...so good to see him. :)
Rupert returns! YAY!!!
David Letterman rules!!!!
So nice to see Rupert! :D
He should have handed him a Tomato at the end
He’s no Letterman...
B.L.T Bacon Lettuce Toast
Free Chips ... I couldn't stop laughing
Too much noise just for a sandwich, not funny :(
Poor guy!!!
It's a bit, it was staged
First the Soul, then the Scarecrow, and now the Sandwich. The Dark Night trilogy is complete.
So glad to see Rupert return. He was one of the greatest recurring bits on Letterman!
Oh and Stephen, on behalf of everyone with even the slightest bit of OCD, screw you for leaving that slice of tomato in the goddamn picture!
the CORRECT way to make a BLT is with *BACON*, lettuce and tomato, a single slice the latter two hidden under layers of bacon
+Field Marshal Fry Ah, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of Ankh-Morpork, I see.
What is he talking about? You can clearly see the tomato under the lettuce.
+Sébastien Henri that'sthejoke.jpg
"free chips?" hahahahaha
That BLT is missing a thin layer of peanut butter too.
Rupert is the best. Ever
That's a pretty fast exit out of the studio haha
i'm becoming obsessed with this
I'm getting the distinct impression I just saw a local sandwich commercial...
"The Colbert Sandwich: Now available at random New York sandwich shop!"
Yeeeeah. There was definitely tomato in that sandwich, Stephen.
The description here is pretty great too: "But when it comes to sandwiches, nothing is every simple".
Very? Ever? Which was intended? I must know!
A healthy breakfast always starts with Stephen Colbert.
I miss Rupert!
Dave and Rupert were a great team. Colbert is stiff and awkward.
Yea yea Tomatogate for sure!!! Still a good way to get into the Hello Deli for a bit. Next bit: Colbert acts if something isn't right --'something's still bugging me' -calls the Hello Deli and orders enough BLTs for everyone in the audience and see what Rupert can deliver by the end of taping!!!
There is tomato in that sandwich. Still love you Colbert
I'm stressing: Did Rupert REALLY forget the tomato or is he playing along with the gag? 🥪🥓🍅
My hunch would be actual sandwich inspired an homage to an old Dave bit. But the chemistry was off. Two standing around awkward bogged down. Thank goodness they had a solid out or that would have been historically not good.
It’s television. That should answer your question 😬
Rupert would have been a better replacement.
I love tomatoes on my sandwich as much as Stephen does!
Who the hell is Steve? 6:34
Memories!
Letterman always did skits to be positive of Rupert's shop. he suggested Rupert put in a Slurpee machine and then promoted it , he had Donnie Deutsch (branding expert ) create a commercial for him, Englebert Humperdink sing in his shop. All Colbert could come up with is a skit that essentially is a negative food review on nationl television , skit writers obviously didn't take business in college
The second thing Colbert could come up with to pay tribute to Rupert Jee's retirement party was THE FRICKING LOBBY OF THE THEATER??!! A month ago Barbara Gaines' channel posted the tribute show that the staff and Paul Shaffer gathered for Rupert and his wife. I think it's a bit sad that they were placed on the lobby.
I use to work at a Deli sandwich shoppe, and 95% of the time, giving away a free bag of chips solve most disputes (customers unsatisfactory) in my experience.
Cool that Colbert is still using Rupert G!
breakfast is sooo over-rated...you won't die of starvation. Skip dinner, and you will di di die!
I can't be the only one that sees the tomato on the bottom
Everyone's gone but Rupert G
this is colbert's steve jobs moment however hes only talking about a sandwhich lol
it is 3am.. I now want a frickin' BL(A)T.. bacon lettuce avocado tomato.. mayo with a sprinkle of crushed pepper on a toasted Orowheat oat bread... curse you Colbert...
wait, his T is silent... why couldn't it be that his sandwhich's Tomato pays homage to his silent T by being absent?
BLT:
Bacon
Loads of bacon
Ton of bacon
That is messed up. Poor guy made a mistake and now he gets intimidated and embarrassed
justsomehuman person The sad part is that he didn’t even make a mistake. He made the sandwich as he was instructed to. Colbert’s assistant forgot to tell him extra tomato.
This really wasn't nearly as funny as when Letterman did this, I know it was a joke but it came off kinda mean whereas David Letterman came off more like a kooky friend
Oh Steven, you child! Don't give up the fight man. For chips, at least get a free sandwich!!
The Fundamental truth of the Universe:
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
- Stephen Colbert
Excruciating. Rupert deserves better.
Stephen can be a jerk sometimes! Poor Rupert lol
I really only clicked on this because I like Rupert Jee, and I saw Rupert Jee. We love you Rupert, we'd watch you all the time if you had a show. Stephen Colbert is a nothing to me. Honest to God . Thanks Rupert for the great entertainment! We love you! 3:54
I think you've got a typo in the description lol.
That was mean.
Free chips would solve any problem.
Dat Hamilton reference do...
The tomato just gets in the way of all that bacon- that’s a pretty generous portion of bacon
He didn't say there was no tomato, he said there was a lack of it. He specifically requested extra tomato but that's all he got. Keep up if you're gonna hate!
My dad has pretty bad vision, even he saw the tomato when he was watching the show last night.
oh how original !!!
What will be part II after this Colbert sandwich introduction ? Michael Douglas as guest and remaking of Falling Down Coca Cola part in which he confront that Korean guy ? It would be excellent to see Michael Douglas with baseball tree again and Rupert G is perfect for the role as Korean guy.
I'm all for Rupert getting tv time but this seemed to me like he's being shat on. #badform
+Timothy Graham what are u talking about? it's a bit, it's not real.
Why is there Tylenol and Advil in the background? 😂
I love how many people saw discolored bread in a GIANT photo of a sandwich & decided that was the tomato even tho the man speaking said there was no tomato & the guy who made the sandwich said there's no tomato YET they insist they see tomato. This is why we can't have nice things.
nicholas schoonbeck Huh? I think you need to look again, bro. There’s a slice of tomato on that sandwich.
the tomato is right there on the bottom
