You hunter/gatherer vs horticulture discussion was too simplistic. Along with the planting of crops came the domestication of animals. That along with planting crops many tribes would still hunt to supplement their diet. The main real benefit of horticulture is that it allowed tribes to settle down in one area for extended periods of time as opposed to constantly needing to travel to follow the herds. This allowed them time to learn how to build better and more permanent shelters and extend their knowledge beyond that. But the domestication of animals had to happen at the same time.
