Monty Python's Argument Sketch performed with two vintage speech synthesizers
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 сер 2013
- Michael Palin is played by the Dectalk Express
(Perfect Paul modified to sound more like Stephen Hawking)
John Cleese is played by the Intex Talker
(Votrax SC-01A)
Communication with the speech synthesizers is done with CoolTerm:

If computers become self aware I imagine it'd be a lot like this.
They gotta keep busy somehow
Watch a film called Colossus: The Forbin Project
I think that might actually be possible... eventually. I mean, we are only self-aware because it is an evolutionary advantage. If we simulate biology and natural selection with neural networks, they too may be self-aware.
omg bp103!!!
This sounds EXACTLY like if youtube comments gained a life of their own.
No it doesn't.
yes it does.
Miguel Baptista yes it does
+Strawberry Jam
No, it isn't.
Yes it is.
It's like Kraftwerk having a water cooler conversation.
Sorry I’m 4 years late!
florian be trolling. rip to a goddamn legend
English Q*Bert talks to Moonbase Alpha
SuperMarioFan123311 LOL
My vote is for moonbace alpha becuse it can sing
Lol
@Duck the 3rd I.AM.OTHERWISE.OCCUPIED.
I like how the Michael Palin part actually sounds very indignant and annoyed.
Dectalk is so sassy I love it.

I am definitely on his side here.

Monty Python and vintage speech synthesizers in the same video? I must be in hyperfixation heaven.
This would make a fun radio program
I agree
I thought it _was_ a radio program?

"I thought it _was_ a real radio program."
with the advent of AI, somebody out there could find a way to perpetually generate arguments and feed them to the speech synths!
The Intex Talker is a nifty little gadget, even though it's more than 30 years old, you only need a USB-to-serial adapter to have it up and running on any modern computer.
+Tomato Hentai %$@#&!!!!
that votrax voice reminds me of a product called the braille and speak. its a product that is made for for the blind. it was created in the early 90's. I never owned one, but my friend has one, and they sound really cool. by the way, I think steven hawking did use dectalk at one point, but now he uses a different chip called speech plus, made by sentegram communication.
I'm pretty sure that Stephen Hawking has always used the Speech Plus CallText 5010 voice system, but that it's often mistaken for a Dectalk - they do sound similar at first glance, but there are significant differences in the intonation and transition between phonemes.
You are correct, he still uses the Calltext 5010 because it's the only device that can produce that exact sounding voice. All other devices sound a little different because of how they are built and the components inside.
Also, the Calltext 5010 by SpeechPlus Inc 1988 is a Dectalk device. Dectalk isn't a company name, it's a set of text to speech algorithms which was developed by MIT and adapted for use by other companies including SpeechPlus Inc who manufactured the Calltext 5010.
What about the drivers?
The static in the voltrax sounds so interesting for some reason.
I know, right?
Those are technically the fundamental formant frequencies.
For Chipspeech users:
The closest you can get is Dee Klatt for DECtalk and Bert Gotrax for the Intertex Talker
actually there is an alternative
just emulating the software and using the singing function
Votrax SC01 chip (inside unit on the right) made by a company with the best name ever: Federal Screw Works

I've never seen a Monty Python skit and now I know I am going to love the movies
Worth it, they suck so bad they’re funny
this is legitimately my favorite video on the internet

Easily the nerdiest thing I've found in a VERY long time. I LOVE IT!
Nothing quite beats the DECtalk speaking an Ultrix not sequence with the Reverend 69
"An argument is an intellectual process"
*sigh* How I wish it were so...
I know people talk about the singularity, or robots being angry at us for ages of enslaving them. But I personally think this is what Robots will be like. Especially if we build them.
I like how the little box sounds like it's getting annoyed
I swear after like 2000 years, in the far future, this would be the definition of whole comedy
I would like to hear them performing the Abbott and Costello skit "Who's On First?"
No u wouldn't
I would actually really enjoy that
Especially the part: "Now that's the first thing you've said right." "I don't even know what I'm talking about!"
The Intex Talker at 0:55 creases me up! “No no no no no no”
Stephen Hawking VS Q*Bert anymore?
Queen Jessibe What Dee Klatt and Bert Gotrax do when they’re put in a room together
5.0 made the whole series so legendary it feels weird thinking of DECtalk as "vintage"
The funniest TV show ever combined with the most hilarious voices ever results in this great video. Awesome.
LOL the deadpan voices of the synthesizers makes the Kafkaesque joke funnier - I saw a Dalek version about 10 years ago, I think it was a BBC VT Xmas reel - that was hilarious with the menacing rising voices getting ever more frustrated 🤣
Thanks for the upload, I thought I would never be able to use my grandpas Intex talker with a newer interface, other than his commodore.
NO PLS NOT DECTALK AAAAHHH JOHN MADDEN SAVE MEEEEEEE
Your lord can't help you out side of the moonbase
ayou
Fatmeatball we're all on the moon now bitch
Oh I thought this was "Abuse".
Stupid git...
🔨 *bonk*
I now want to know which speech synth would've played "Abuse."
"All hail the supreme GORFian Empire."
In some ways, this is funnier than the original!
It's like Stephen Hawking meets the speaking clock...
DECtalk: It isn’t just saying no it isn’t.
Votrax: Yes it is.
DECtalk: No it isn’t!
"i had enough of this" "no you havent" and they keep going.
even with the robot voice, the brilliance of the writing shines
1:50 Good moarnin
When you’re up at 10 PM watching two computers talk to each other
An adaptation of a comedy classic better suited to the tastes of our future robot overlords.
I have not laughed so hard in ages! Reminds me of "Dr Sbaitso" and the "Talking Parrot" application that came with the old SoundBlaster sound cards. :)
I think this could be more interesting if their was a third synthesizer in the mix.
This is what it’s like to argue with Cleverbot
But it isnt just saying 'no it isn't!'
Yes it is
NO IT ISN'T!
Love that part
we need more of these!
I kinda' want to hear the dead parrot sketch this way.
2 computer grandpas arguing/contradicting each other cuz they're confused
10 years later, and this is still funny.
I just love the voice of the DECtalk Express machine.
I love the camera work
thank you youtube for this nearly 8 year old video
This is pure genius!
I'm imagining metal sonic arguing with metal knuckles with the audible speech frequency computers
How unique! This almost reminds me of the C.O.P.S. in Telltale's Sam and Max games!
Also, in hindsight, I'd prefer these vintage text-to-speech synthesizers over today's AI-powered voice clones anyday.
I arguably almost like this version better.

THANK YOU, GEEOOD MARNING!
Idk why but I have kept watching this repeatedly
Lol the one of the left sounds so much more natural. It was the moonbase alpha voice.
Superb!!
This is the computer equivalent of two old men arguing in the nursing home
It's like two of my robot assistants are arguing-
I love this.
Ok, this was awesome, I was laughing my head off!
This is the best thing ever XD
I shouldn't be laughing this hard... but I am! Hahahahahaha, I love the original, but hearing it like this...... hahahahaha, OMG!!
I should do a video of the old chatbot Azile that used to argue with itself.
Brilliant!
This is the internet I signed up for!
wonderful
I love their voices tho
Speech synthesizers? Pff,. LUXURY!
When I wurr a lad we 'ahd ter use us own vocal chords to repeat old televisual comedy sketches.
Vocal chords...we didn't even 'ahv any ruddy vocal chords. Mi Mam used ter ahv ter string some old knicker elastic across our throats ev'ry mornin' else we'd be sent to the special school as mutes. And we were th lucky wuns, I tell thee, we wurr t'lucky wuns. Mi great Grandad had a rudimentary Kalimba implanted in his clavicle by 'tNHS. you should bloody 'ear him when he starts coughin' after 'is cigar on Sudnay, like a broken, drunk, Hungarian music box.
Voice synthesizers. Luxury.
kraftwerk
Lolol. Wonder what it would sound like with these two running in parallel with the same speech?
I am so gonna find a way to play this randomly for a room full of nerds where they can hear it _but can't see it_ and see if anybody can identify what the heck it is! X^D
The oblivion ai conversational skills have come a long way
Genius!
This reminds me of two computers fighting each other
This is EPIC ! :-)
This is all 'AI' will ever amount to.
In B4 this goes Viral.
"You Did Not!" "Y E S I D I D"
I can die happily now
when i was taking compsci at college , my instructor would proctor tests using a speach enabled commodore pet computer . very funny. id love bugs bunny to step in and say ," ah shaddup".
"Is the right room for an argument?"
"I used to love you once."
Stephen Hawking arguing with a 1960s Cyberman. Awesome.
funnier than it should have been.
No it wasn't.
Jakob Schenström Yes it was.
tubemaster2801 no it wasn't.

you go paul!!!!
It's even funnier this way!
dectalk sounds pretty good actually
How have I never seen this before?
Omg that DEC Talk Express is definitely the same voice from Back to the Future part 2. "Jacket is dry" lmao
YES it is.
This is Genius .. !
i have no idea what i just watched
The voice of John Cleese's role makes him sound like he really hates his job, lol!
If AI had its own version of twitter this is how I imagine what it would look like.
