Thank you for an excellent simple tutorial. I'm setting up our first home server and you've made the initial setup an accessible experience. Obviously TrueNAS is a far more complex beast and I look forward to exploring it. I just love that I can recycle old hardware into something useful to us instead of buying yet another box. Once again, thank you.
I'd like to second this. Also for me this saved me a ton on headache on the system process I was trying to use before. I've spend tens of hours trying to set something up to the same effect and this takes you through in just a good coherent way!
This was easily the best tutorial I've heard without being ridiculously long and full of extra chitchat. I had been poking at mine on and off for 3 days trying to get shares to work and you made this a breeze! I'll be back for more info later. Thank you.
@@EverythingSmartHome Guys, what the best OS and setting to change my desktop PC into NAS multimedia server? Excellent guidance, straight to the point, no sponsor brag, no screwing around as many other UA-camrs do to artificially lengthen the video. Your instructions are a great lead for me to setup a 2012 HP ProLiant N36L MicroServer as a TrueNAS CORE system. I got hold of a HP H240 SmartArray Host Bus Adapter a seller forgot to remove from another HP MicroServer I bought on eBay. Turns out: It's now a great addition as I could slot in a 4-bank 2,5" drive caddy in the 5,25" bay. Now the system is handling the default 3,5" vertical drives AND the supplementary 2,5" horizontal drives via the HBA mentionned above. Eight drives in one system! Important Note: TrueNAS ZFS does NOT play nicely alongside hardware RAID, so it's definately the best option to configure the adapter as HBA in order to pass the drives as-is directly to the system.
thankyou kind sir, i updated truenas and lost network access and it was ages since i installed truenas on my server (using your video back then also) i couldnt remember how to install it again and came back to watch your video. absolute clear instructions and complete legend mate
I watched several videos and each time failed to get the drive set up properly (first NAS I have built) I watch this video and it works first time! Excellent video, clear and concise. Thank you!
I keep coming back to this video whenever I need to reset my NAS on a new machine. Everything is well organized and fast while being easily understandable. Great video!

Thank you my man, too kind too kind! For sure I was taken back by how much goes into making videos and like you have a new found appreciation for the top guys!
You sure look like you got a lot more than me down! I'm hoping I have the hard part behind me for this video as I've done a smidge of editing. Still not gonna get to look anything close to someone like you for a while though, but one can still aim high!

I was looking for a video to send to a friend because I have no time this days to explain to him how to set up samba share and ACL in TrueNAS and i find your video that is extremely good. Highly suggested to everyone.
I was given an R710 for free and jumped the gun and installed windows server 2016. After some research it appears that this would better suite my home server needs and I appreciate the straightforward video!
Straight to the point, no excessive chit chat, and pretty much covered absolutely everything necessary for a first time user/setup. Thank you very much! Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot! I just went through the process in a virtual machine (including removing of one disc and resilvering etc. making me familiar with the most needed features) before setting up the real hardware and data. worked like a charm.
Superb tutorial, Everything went so much smother using your video.. I thought it may have been a bit out of date since 2020 but it was excellent, Many thanks
I just recently installed and set up my Truenas system. I relied HEAVILY on this video. Thank you so much for making this video. Such a big help, that I subbed to the channel. Thank you again.
OMG I have been looking for a no nonsense introduction and overview for TrueNas Core and ofter watching so many poor examples yours was awesome. Subscribed and looking forward to looking at all your content as I am all in on home automation
Great tutorial! I return time and again when I have new builds and when I am trying to remember something. Easy to follow and enjoy the accent. I have looked at multiple tutorials and most get confusing with updates to the video over time. Thanks for taking the time to do these!
Thank you!!!!! I’m only a few months into the PC world and have built my own NAS using old parts and didn’t know what to do at the console menu. This helped me tremendously
This was really awesome. I'm in the process of changing my 10 yr old synology to as HP MicroServer and this guide has helped me set up the basic. Thank you.
Thank you for this. If it's not already to late for "any further truenas videos", I would love to see you do one on setting up the nextcloud plugin with truenas. :)

Wow, thanks for your help. I installed trueNAS on virtual box. I want to learn how to use it before running it full time on my Plex server. I didn't know what a dataset was, so this is very helpful. Your tutorial is straightforward and easy to understand. Great video especially for noobs like me!
Love this man! Thank you.. just got my TrueNAS up with your help after a long haul.. global shortage of HDDs, global shortage of Fractal HHD trays, first mobo not compatible for IP address.. BUT.. alas! Up and live now. Great share. Thank you.
your explanation was easy to follow. I've watched two other tutorials on basic installations & use of TrueNAS and man this was easy to follow. Thanks so much, Cheers
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been planning on creating a home NAS for quite some time, and was thinking the setup part with permissions etc. would be quite a hassle - but this tutorial made it very easy! Thank you.
Thank you very much for this great explanation! I heard of True Nas from work and wanted to try it for my home. I was able to install it but was stuck after that until I came across your video. It helped a lot and was able to get things going. Now need to do some final touch based on your recommendation. Again TY!
thanks a lot for your video. even if it has been released a couple of years ago, it provided me with steps required to setup storage on my TrueNAS install with a fully wrking NFS SHARE. THANK YOU !!! :-)
Thanks for the video! As a total beginner, unfortunately I did not get much out of it as many of the terms and their purpose and meaning are unknown to me, for example pool, data set etc etc. This video though gave me some information and a basic overview of the TrueNAS interface.
Nice overview, thanks alot! Your short description of the options at the end of the video covers what most users need to know to start. You could maybe do this on other parts too, like „windows“ checkbox when creating the user or the ACL. Just one or two sentences why you do it and what it does can help clear things up for new users, i think.
Thank you so much for publishing this ! Finally my windows file manager immediately sees my shared drive from Truenas without me having to enter any data like ip address etc. Just username and password and it works !
Thank you very much. This video made it easy for me to install and understand TrueNAS Core 13. I look forward to seeing and hearing more on this topic.👌

Yes that's right you can choose two disks (they don't need to be identical) and it will create a mirror for you so if you lose one then you are unaffected. It is zfs though not LVM. Hope that helps!

I ran into one issue when I was installing TrueNAS on the initial installation it didnt like that I plugged my USB into a 3.0 slot.. I moved it to a 2.0 and it installed perfectly. If anyone runs into that issue try switching it to 2.0. Other than that, I was able to follow your instructions perfectly. Can you please make a video on moving the plex metadata to a separate SSD? That would be really helpful. Thank you for your efforts and clear explanation.
