- Francis Buckley. Grammy winning Audio Engineer. All round great guy. Project studio fairy godmother?
In Studio Rescue we join Francis as he visits a range of home studios and combines the fundamentals of acoustic science with a few hard-earned industry secrets to get the most out of the available space.
This time around Francis drops in on James Hunt who has a typical project studio set up in his bedroom. With plenty of equipment he's having problems getting the right sound and has asked Francis to lend a helping hand.

lol you know hes putting that drum kit back in when he leaves
thats what i was thinking lmfao XD
TBH i kinda dont like how the guy takes out this and that without asking if he uses it (for example: the drumkit)
nos0323 It's optional. If you don't want them to do anything, ask them to leave.
gettin' tired of this mic shit :D
Robert Dimitrov so true omg
+lazyflame2 LOL Oh man that was a good one! Because it's so true! lol
The kid looks so excited, i almost started crying, such an emotional moment.
+youjotr9876 Ha!
+youjotr9876 pmsl
Lol
Yeah i bet he totally wasn't weirded out by the presenter and the crew.
He just needed someone to clean up his room
Lmao
lol he hardly did anything...
what else can they do? he lives in a shoe box!
ILLUMINATUS those pink fluffy handcuffs tho 😂😂
lmfao
"Alright, first thing's first; you've got a Creed poster on the wall, let's go ahead and get that out of here"
This should be the top comment
I'm looking at the Blink 182 posters lmao
Hahahaaa!!
just watched this, this guy (James Hunt) does mixing for TDE now, Credits including Kendrick Lamar
SZA
Schoolboy Q
Isaiah Rashad
I've never heard of any of those people..
Music Islife you’re kidding right
@@zay4342 I'm as serious as a heart attack. I'm guessing they are US artists? Well, guess what? Not everyone lives in the US and not all US artists are successful overseas.
Music Islife dude. Kendrick Lamar is right behind Drake as the biggest rapper in the world right now lol.
RedStl never heard of either of em...but then, only steers and queers listen to rap music round here...
I bet you as soon as Francis left James put all his shit back the way it was and just kept the mic and acoustic treatment.
jeptar007 yeahhhhhhh he wasn't thankful cause he was thinking I liked my shit the way it was.
I bet he kept it the way it was cause he will get a much better sound the way he has it now I do audio engineering myself and I mix music and I know he will get a much better sound and mix with what Francis did for him
So I don’t think he will change back after he realizes that he can get a great mix
0:25
* camera crew walks in, sets up equipment for 5 mins then finally starts recording *
* Francis walks in *
Francis: Hey James!
James: Oh hi Francis, I had no idea you'd be here!
Why do I keep watching these. They're so bad, yet so good. I don't understand
It's like a mad tv sketch
Wow you can feel the awkward
westred
He walked in like that uncle you haven't seen in years but mom wants him to talk to you because your behavior in school and dads not around 😆
@@mbf6160 lol - you read a lot into that.
This kid is like ok.. ya.. cool.. whatever..
***** HAHAHAHAHAHA right.
***** Agreed, I'd been hopping all over the place with the new microphone and paneling that was setup!! Some folks!! Come rescue me dude!!!
***** I'm thinking he was still bummed about losing his TV and Dresser.
+The247th Looks like he has the privileged life of mommy and daddy's money buying him "Music Stuff." His parents' connections probably landed him this opportunity. You can tell when these boys react the way he does. I'd be doing fucking cartwheels.
To be fair to the kid, Mr. Fixit guy never gave the kid a chance to say 'thank you' when he gifted him the fancy mic, the guy never stopped talking long enough for him to get a word in.
This kid was one of the audio engineers on Kendrick Lemars To Pimp A Butterfly!!!! He's won an award for it and everything its insane, Google his name now
Yep! How crazy! We're super happy for James!
Wow that's incredible! From one of my favorite albums too. From bedroom to studio.
"Maybe we can loose this dresser over here, open up some space in the corner, maybe get rid of the autographed and framed Creed poster..."
Lose.
I hope that kids music is more energetic than his personality.
marcuelcajon lol
Ahhahah
I think this punk lost his personality along with his home studio lol
He b awrite
Such passion! 🔥🤷🏻♂️
When he brings the mic “what is this?” Lmao
yeah haha how did he not know it was a guitar
😂
Now...rescue his musical taste.
Savage!
CrassZorro Creed, yes please rescue that taste but Blink 182 for the win. Haha.
Room treatment does make a ton of difference. These videos are slightly corny , but I enjoy them.
So positive man! Love what you're doing.. Much love
I love this show, the mic giveaway moment is priceless here¡ One of the best episodes.
When he said lose the drum hit, he regretted this whole thing.
Gotta love this show. Amazing!
Man I've learned so much in just 2 videos hosted by Francis that I'm so hyped to start learning more and setup my first home studio this Christmas. Thanks a million.
I really like these videos. This is how a lot of producers get started including myself.
Digging this series.... hope you guys still do it!
Francise and Rode microphones. Thank you for taking your time helping Artist, Bedroom Recording enthusiast. I enjoyed watching and learning.
And that's how you saved his studio awesome 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I just found out about this series and just in time while I redo my home set-up! awesome
I use to watch this when I was 14 and just started out... wow can’t believe UA-cam recommended this to me after so many years
Sound Masters at its finest! Great video Mr.Buckley
@SpeedFreakNO Francis says that the panels on the back wall are placed so they catch waves coming directly from the speakers. He usually starts with the area in the center of the wall and see how that works. Again don't use too much, start with 1 or 2 panels and see how that sounds. Every room is different. You could also try some kind of diffuser to not absorb the wave but break it up so it doesn't bounce right back at you.
Yous taught me so much. Thanks & I like how you made sure you cleaned off the monitor. seriously. Great stuff man Awesome! Thanks
Awesome video - i just added to my Favorites ! now I'm gonna watch all the Episodes
lol they just cleaned his room
Well sometimes thats all it takes.. If you have too much stuff in your room it causes the sound to bounce all around. But yeah all the did was get rid of stuff and add one basstrap and one acoustic panel :D
lmfao
Ex0rz check out Dan Baker room studio on his channel.. 😁
James has Grammy's now and he's getting more 2018. It all started here. Thanks Francis
Love what you do. Little things can make a big difference. I have applied, I need a rescue.
I have to admit, when I first started watching these videos I was highly critical. But I do enjoy these videos. Reality is not everyone is going to have a professional studio, and many beginner/artists have studios like these. Good enjoyable videos!
This is so brilliant...
I liked how this company tries to help. subscribed!
Awesome. I love the simplicity here. I recorded a ton of records on Rode and still have one that I use daily.
Cornelio Austin Same here man. I got the NT1A.
Best Pedagogy ever Made; Real instruction
Gotta love the sound fx with the stuff from his room
thanks for the great information studio rescue!!!!!!!
Love this show!
I used the mirror trick when putting the pads up in my studio. My room is pretty big so I had to put quite a few up. Then I went round and clapped and it wasn't until I put the last pad up that my room was completely dead in every spot. Sounds awesome now :)
thanks! that video teach me alot of the changes that i need to do in my studio.
I am always envious of these youngsters with Pro Tools rigs in their bedrooms. I mean, now, I have an HD3 rig and a C24, Neumann mics and outboard analog heaven, but that is after about 20 years. At these kids age I had a Tascam PortaStudio 4 track cassete deck. That was the home studio of the day. I dont think they know how good they have it:)
Thanks for the video it was great. Learned some new tricks!
Love the mirror trick!
James is using a Kensington expert trackball mouse. - there are plenty of different trackball models out there, so its worth searching around!
Francis ought to have seen that creed poster and worked straight back out the front door.
great video! and the flexi screen so cool.
Reaching the rack equipment looks a pain in the new setup.
Wow. Very pro. Respect. Thanks.
Studio Rescue: James learns how to clean his room.
taught me alot about speaker placement and soundproofing foam.
Such a good idea for teaching this
Thanks for your question. We're hoping to branch outside the states in the next series, so be sure to get your application in!
I learned a lot from this, thanks for the tips Studio Rescue!
9:20 That's not a vocal booth. That's just a piece of foam on the least sensitive side of your microphone. Thus letting in all of the room noise from the front, below and above. It does prevent the natural voice sound waves hitting the wall behind it, but don't think you're there in creating a silent recording space just using a curved piece of foam! The foam should be positioned behind your head, not behind the microphone.
Tip 2: often a large diaphragm condenser mic could maybe not the best option for recording in a non-quiet space. Consider a decent shotgun, especially when doing voice-overs.
Yup, the guy said it all, after the treatment the place "LOOKS" better. :) Need I say more.
Ive got a studio crisis. I need a full studio. I look forward to your visit. Thanks.
woooow caña manabita!!!! best liquor ever!!! greetings from Ecuador!!!
Very interesting. Very useful . Thanks
This is studio recoarding very good
Dude, your show is awesome! Just what i needed right now, when i'm equiping my home studio. I learned lots of useful tips, so i wanted to thank you for that! Keep doing great shows :)
How come there any new episodes this is a very informative program and I personally would like to see more episodes?
Awesome! Very informative!
Show some emotion son the man just gave you hundreds in gear
Studio Rescue Nice Work man
dope! subscribed! this video just blow my mind and made realize about the acoustics problem in my room and of some friends! from now on i'll be a devote follower! thank you!
this vid helped me out so much
Wow. Cool video. Keep it up.
awesome!
I need to have my studio rescued!!!! Are you still doing this series?!?!?!?!
Interesting video. I'm on the right track then with my speakers.
Clothes dresser? Who needs that? Storage shelfs? Don't need 'em. Drum machine? Nah
This should be in a cringe compilation
But does that piece of foam spark joy?
😂
great job
He was barricaded in there with the keyboard blocking the way 😂 he was like “parents don’t come in or else I’ll beat you with the drumsticks”
Love the mirror trick, nice one thank you :-)
Caña Manabita!!! Lol! How does that travel so much!!! Si para mi, Manabi esta a 5 horas!! hahahahha love it!
First problem is the monitors are just sitting another set of speakers, should be on stands whether they’re on the standing one or the ISOacoustic type of stands, secondly...KRK is no bueno. Yamaha HS series for the win.
A great change!
I have the 2nd gen Rokit 8's. I'm very pleased with them the sound quality is awesome. You hear what you mix and master. Can't go wrong really. I've worked with several artist's trying to break into the music industry. At the moment working on an album with a female artist, it is hard work but I love the challenge. I will record my studio set and let me know what you think. i looking for 003 or a digi mixer so i can monitor sing while they r recording their vocals. Thanks again vid rescues.
@7:55 - LOLed so hard... “uhhh... what’s my line again, oh yeah! Wut is dat?!” (Cue one minute of promo talk from host.)
Ouch, sound waves don't "develop". Let's put this to rest already. Standing speakers on speakers is not a good idea. You will get sound from the speaker that isn't turned on because of sympathetic vibrations.
Damn Deal Done exactly. I like either the long stands or something like the ISOacoustics.
Oops..im guilty too
im wondering if Francis Buckley is still doing this i could use some professional help setting up my studio. but i relly think watching the videos will help out a lot.
itd be helpful if you could do a room frequency response analysis at the mix postition before and after with pink noise or a reference track
great work either way but i think it'd help show people the difference after applying your advice!
thanks x
Are you serious? This gotta be on prime TV!
Would be nice to put the information of shock mount or a link directly to the product and not only the product's site.
Guys I really need the name of the song that was played before Francis brought the microphone and when James fired up his studio. That song was so awsome!
man this kid is now a Multi-Platinum, 2x Grammy Award Winning Engineer
Are u fr?
so please mtv(Francis Buckley) pimp my studio
bring this back
greeeeeat video! I think it would be better if you guys have used a flat mic (RTA) and swept the frequency spectre from the previous sweet spot he was using and the new sweet spot. So we could see the difference of the two room tunes in graphics too. But awesome video anyway.
Uh a thank you would have been nice when they gave him free gear...
It's almost as if..he went out of his way to NOT say thank you.
LMFAO probably
Its staged and they probably didn't want some kid just talking and being overwhelmed with new gear
That's easy actually. First reflection is any hard surface directly to the left and right of the listener. You can use a mirror to find it. Sit down where your listening position is. Have an assistent move a hand mirror along the wall to the left or right of you and when you can see the speaker in the mirror tell them to stop and put a panel there. That gets you 80% there. Next panel behind your speakers at wall in between and to rear of them. Add bass traps in corner to taste and you're done.
Cool dude knows his stuff
i think its better to have the speakers wide to make a better stereo image, even more than having the equilateral triangle, because you still have a sweet spot by pointing em at you.
is this true to some one else? ( i had to move speakers around for 3 days to get this hypothesis).
what do you think would be the best affordable audio interface for the mxl v67g and at this moment i have a berhinger xenyx1204 usb and it doesnt sound how i want it to any suggestions? i would really like your help
