06:44 *Apologies! I just discovered that the animations for putting on hats depend on the kind of hat Arthur /John uses.* Arthur would look up like John with some hats, and John would adjust some like Arthur.
Fun observation about Arthur's walk, idk if it's intentional: His right hand doesn't stray too far from his primary weapon. It's always in close reach.
Fact, and it indeed was intentional. Same for john. It's a detail from rdr1, while john still had his right hand going further than in rdr2, his right hand was making a smaller movement and more making a round (if that makes sense) around his gun compared to his left hand
Also it's genuinely hilarious that they took John dying if he so much as touches water as a clunky mechanic in the first game and adapted it it for the prequel
I wonder if there's any content or areas that become inaccessible once you become John due to there being surrounding water? Does anyone know if there's anything in RDR2 that can only be accessed by swimming?
Hmm. I recall there being a treasure map location reached by swimming (it's a little island in a lake), but you can use your horse to swim! Lucky for John lol.
I like the differences between Arthur and John. Arthur’s is more lively, and John is more controlled, steeled. Arthur keeps his dominant hand in close reach of his holster when walking John is very natural and stiff, with more visible ‘control’ if that makes sense (in terms of depleted cores, he only slightly displays, while Arthur is visibly reacting to them). I also like the detail of the Deadeye core, since it’s filled using alcohol and tobacco, they’re showing signs of withdrawals *Not to mention John’s goofy ass run when holding the big fish*
You wonderfully put my exact thoughts into words. Arthur's animations feel 'open' and casual, while John's animations feel reserved and calm, which suits their characters so well. John running with the fish, though, feels so uncharacteristic of him, as if Rockstar switched Arthur's animations with him.
Sad. This comment section doesnt know about performance capture, so let me explain. Those animations are done by the actors, meaning in irl they actually run and walk like that.
You are right, to an extent. The reason why people find John's animations funny or uncool is probably because he moves differently than he did in RDR1, or because the animations don't really suit his character. It has been confirmed by Rob Wiethoff himself that the way John walks and runs in RDR1 is exactly the way he does in real life. But John's animations in RDR2 are way different from what his animations were in RDR1. That could mean that he was directed by the orders of the game creators to walk or run in a different way than he normally does. Also, from what I've seen in other mod videos, John's original animations are in the game files that Rockstar decided not to use for reasons unknown. Who knows? Maybe they have replaced John's original animations with some NPC's. That is just my personal theory though.

Here's my take on the dead eye differences: ● Arthur: His deadeye is a clock ticking even before contracting TB, what I take from this, is that his life is (simply putting it) a mess of confusion. Not knowing when you will die. And wondering if you'll be shot most nights (as stated in the prologue) and having nothing to lose. ● John: As for John, he has his life somewhat figured out, in means of having a family, and most importantly, a purpose. Therefore his deadeye is a heartbeat, in hopes of living long enough to be a good dad for his son. ------- It's important to know, the game only took place in a few months for Arthur. He is no doubt, a bad man. Stealing, robbing, killing. For the sake of obeying a loyalty to the only masculine figures in his life. Only towards the end does he seek redemption. He's been seasoned to not know safety, or when he will die. John, despite being raised in an orphanage (RDR1 Dialogue in Mexico) wasn't adopted by Dutch and Hosea until later. John knows safety, and has a means of self preservation, even if it means defying loyalty to a person. Especially, since he has a wife and kid. In best interests of himself, and his family. (Which is good) That's just what I think, though. Take it with a grain of salt.
Love the last part about Arthur and John! I think most people would agree with your take, at least that is kinda the theory about deadeye sounds that has been going around.
2:04. Due to his weight, Arthur does not work his shoulders so much and the fish does not seem too heavy to him in motion. I weigh a little myself, about 65 kilograms, and I know what it's like to run with a slightly heavy object for you, which you can still carry. You seem to be carrying it, but the direction seems to be determined by it (this object), it kind of pulls you, which is why you have to connect your shoulders to work to stabilize so that the object does not fall out in motion. The weight difference is just like in real life. When my father (90-95 kg) carries something heavy, he moves his arms much less and his legs more often, making sharp and distant steps, with some calculation... you can't call it "slow", but the physics of his movement does not depend on the object in his hands. Meanwhile, I'm mincing my feet fast and faster and faster.
About the "strange animation" at 7:03, that happens because the game doesn't use the third person animations when you're in first person, as your character moves faster and it would feel super clunky/restrictive, so the character enters a different "always ready" (leaning forwards a bit) set of animations to match the faster player movement and remove the weight. You can see this very clearly in front of mirrors, and it happens with John too. Why you can see the switch of animation sets on Arthur but not on John? I don't know, probably just a minor bug with the timing when switching cameras.
The biggest difference I noticed when I started playing as John is that he shouts at almost everyone when he's on his horse. I loved greeting people as Arthur cause he always came across as polite when speaking to strangers. John always seems aggressive, as if I've hit the antagonise button by accident. I very rarely say anything to NPCs while playing as John. I also prefer Arthur's voice lines when antagonising, John mostly just seems goofy instead of threatening (although I have to admit he does have some pretty good ones).
The difference is that Arthur greets people to appear friendly, which is understandable because he is an outlaw, while John greets people because he is trying to get attention. That's why when John greets people he says "you" or "you mr" or "sir!" These are words that attract attention. I personally like these differences very much.
I wonder if it changes based on Chapter for Arthur too (especially considering his shoulder re: o’driscolls and y’know,,, the obvious matter of health and stamina)
7:25 could be a mocap thing but it also could be in universe arthurs eyes are just kinda bad(or perhaps he is nearsighted) so he has to lean foreward to read small stuff while john doesnt have that issue
Fun fact! RDR2 used mostly mocap, with the VAs as the mocap actors! except for the horses. Those were done with people specifically trained to do the mocap for the horse animations while riding.
@NoviceCix dude even npcs were mocap. Roger and Rob did mocap for npcs and stuff. They also did certain things interchangeably between arthur and John. They talk about this stuff in con panels. Even rdr1 was mocap. The first scene in the train all the characters in that completely acted out the scene in mocap. Rob talks about in a guys video where he plays rdr1
About Arthur leaning forward when in first person, I’m pretty sure that’s because when in first person, he’s in his combat stance and they prob fixed the stance change once they got to John
7:15 this animation can be observed when looking at any mirror you find. Its the first person animation. You can even see it in online mode. You'll know because rockstar has a specific stiff idle and moving animation for first person mode where the screen is pointed exactly where your camera is
@@gesp2742 I always thought it looked more like CJ's sprint animation from GTA SA but now that you mention it it does look more like Tommy's goofy sprint lol
@@Whocares158 Bruh RDR2 is a prequel not sequel. It wouldn't make sense if devs made John swim in RDR2. It would make it look like he got downgraded in RDR1. John can't swim and thats his personality trait. Even Arthur in game says, "Look at you. Can't herd, can't swim" its just the way it is.
7:05 after going back to 3rd person view John moves his body a bit right and left. (Puts his body weight on his righr leg and then on his left leg) And also moves his head to the right
It’s amazing how the Rockstar developers could’ve just copy pasted John Marston into Arthur Morgan and called it a day, but instead they still added those intricate details for players to notice and to be amazed at..
John needs alot of fixes lmao he looks broken mess in Epilogue and there are tons of videos talking about it too. I always liked how Rockstar performs walking cycle animation for most of their characters, with the help of the actors and mocap they're doing of course. My favorite one's gotta be Claude and Niko walking.
The first person to third person animation you see as Arthur comes from a bug. In first person you use a different set of animations, and for some reason as Arthur in an interior that animation delays changing. The best way to see what I'm talking about is to try it in front of the mirror in the Valentine hotel room.
I think they made John so goofy was to illustrate how he was still young. Also to make us more attached to Arthur by keeping him feel more like a real person.
The other reason is that they didn't make it in time to make John's player model so they just slap some of the John's stuff on Arthur and call it John. That's why he looks like a chimpanzee impersonated as a human when you play John.
John is not that built. That’s Arthur’s build. For a game so detailed they really fumbled that one. Breaks immersion for me. Really makes the ending feel a lot more like John is Arthur’s “replacement”. It was fine in one because it’s his son. But there’s no excuse for this one…

With the drinking one at the end. it’s no secret that Arthur has a need to look intimidating and will every once in the while throughout the story show his insecurity. An example of this is when you go back to rob the valentine bank in the first cutscene bill says to uncle or Karen Arthur doesn’t want to do the heist or he’s a quitter and Arthur quickly says he’ll do it (this explanation is whack and the actual cutscene in “Sodom, back to Gomorrah” makes more sense John however has few insecurities or less
Yes, that is true and I understand what you're saying. I have seen Arthur being vulnerable about his insecurities many times. It is a cute little detail that he confesses to being drunk to strangers.
My head cannon is that the reason John is more I suppose stiff is because he is paranoid unlike Arthur he is more relaxed because he already knows the end is coming and he’s fine but John on the other hand he is scared of death and maybe what will happen to his family if he’s no longer around
Its the fact that Arthur is an actual seasoned gunslinger and generally good with his guns. John's only now truly learning what its like to be a gunslinger, hbut he doesn't become ever as seasoned as Arthur. Only truly becoming somewhat of a great gunslinger by RDR1.
about the leaning forward when switching between first pov and third pov; if you look in a mirror while in first pov the character seems to hunker down as if you are in combat or attempting to be stealthy that’s why he seems to lean down. idk why this is, also your walking speed in first person is faster than it is in third person

It would have been awesome if you would have added the comments they make when they skin an animal next to the horse. Arthur sometimes says “Not a bad hunting, boy” and John can even talk Spanish saying “Tranquilo mujer”
I think John’s jogging animation is better, it looks more natural and comfortable. However Arthur’s sprint is much better, it’ actually looks like he’s hauling ass. It fits him quite well too, as a ‘bigger’ guy like him that’s very similar to how it looks when I’m huffing it.

Its hilarious that if you leave john unattended fir 40 second in head high water he'll drown. Cant wait to see how animations will blend with one another in gta 6.
There are different animations for John and Arthur if they were holding a 19 lbs fish. These fish are found on small islands in the far east of the map, just north of Saint Denis. When you get there go to the north of these islands and you will find these huge fish and they are kind of black and you can catch them
Am I the only one who finds John's animation much better than Arthur's? Literally throughout the whole game I was never comfortable with the way Arthur ran. He literally looks like he's running from a bomb about to explode. When I finally got the chance to play as John and saw the way he ran, my first thought was "Oh he's running like a normal human being."
That is an interesting take and I have to say, I'm kind of leaning in to it. Arthur's animations do feel unnatural and exaggerated sometimes but I think that his animations suit him just right.
I believe they were also gonna make nore unique animations for John for side missions but ran out of time and had to scrap it. It would explain why when you do side missions as John, he still has the same open and casual demeanor and stance as Arthur which really contrasts John's animation when he's introducing himself as Arthur's friend
Absolutely. Once you distinguish between Roger's and Rob's natural body movements, you can easily tell which one of them acted in which side missions. While Roger's moves are easily distinguishable, Rockstar made Rob/John move a little more like Roger/Arthur as confirmed by Rob himself which makes Arthur's movements a little less awkward in the missions where Rob acted. Of course, the same doesn't go for John.
So i walk like Arthur, jog and run like John. I have a mixed posture between Arthur and John and i also close my left eye while aiming, but i can shoot with both eyes open if i don't wear eyes spectacles, cuz I have myopia in my right eye, so if i have my glasses on, I'll close my left eye, and shoot with both eyes if I don't wear it.
2:02 You sir, are a fish
I wonder if it changes based on Chapter for Arthur too (especially considering his shoulder re: o’driscolls and y’know,,, the obvious matter of health and stamina)
Maybe I'll try finding any animation differences between sick and healthy Arthur and make a video on it. Thanks.
0:21 Arthur swings with his arms. John swangs with his hips.
John 🥵
That's the first thing I noticed when playing with John lol

7:25 could be a mocap thing but it also could be in universe arthurs eyes are just kinda bad(or perhaps he is nearsighted) so he has to lean foreward to read small stuff while john doesnt have that issue
They did John dirty with his animations. They are very goofy
The animations definitely feel like they are meant for NPCs. Rockstar should've kept the animations from RDR1.
@@NoviceCix There's tons of unused animations for john in the files, wonder why they didn't keep those
Nah you’re tweaking
How so?
About Arthur leaning forward when in first person, I’m pretty sure that’s because when in first person, he’s in his combat stance and they prob fixed the stance change once they got to John
Super underrated video! great job!
I'm glad you think so! Thank you 😃
8:00 john got that lean forward thing too its just less noticeble and this is actually the transition between first person and third person animations
7:15 this animation can be observed when looking at any mirror you find. Its the first person animation. You can even see it in online mode. You'll know because rockstar has a specific stiff idle and moving animation for first person mode where the screen is pointed exactly where your camera is
If red dead 2 ever gets re-released, the first thing they need to do is fix John’s and animations
John's running animation: "FLINT LOCKWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!"
John runs like an anime character😂😂
😂
Johns max running animation looks a lot like Tommys running and walking style from GTA vice city ngl
@@gesp2742 I always thought it looked more like CJ's sprint animation from GTA SA but now that you mention it it does look more like Tommy's goofy sprint lol
His run reminds me the one of Aragorn from PJ's LOTR when he runs through Edoras

3:44 John is dancing
I thought John Moston can swim apparently he can’t
I don't like that they kept that for John about him not Swimming.
Flaw in the first game shouldn't be a personality trait for a Character.
@@Whocares158 it makes him more endearing imo
7:05 after going back to 3rd person view John moves his body a bit right and left.
(Puts his body weight on his righr leg and then on his left leg)
And also moves his head to the right
I love Johns animations. Wish they didn’t fuck it up by giving him Arthur’s walk and run in beechers hope.
Wait what
It’s amazing how the Rockstar developers could’ve just copy pasted John Marston into Arthur Morgan and called it a day, but instead they still added those intricate details for players to notice and to be amazed at..
John needs alot of fixes lmao he looks broken mess in Epilogue and there are tons of videos talking about it too. He has Arthur's body, neck, headshape, hair also most of his anims are Arthur's and he vomits in Arthur's voice and his outfits are broken too just check early screenshot of RDR2 also his hair color is not black but dark brown like in rdr1 and rdr2 main story but epilogue made it black and also John has problem with face expressions too and his running animation doesn't have any variety of going up or down.
I noticed John looks like a cartoon character when he runs full pace
No, rockstar just didn’t bother to use his animation, it all still in the game files it how the modder were able to bring it to life.
In the epilogue he is about the same age as Arthur
Being young has nothing to do with anything lol
@@dvaleehe was downgraded to
The other reason is that they didn't make it in time to make John's player model so they just slap some of the John's stuff on Arthur and call it John.

When john gets drunk he starts singing my darling clementine
I do not think Arthur's right hand is "stiffer" i think he is just keeping it closer to the holster to reach the gun faster.
Y pensar que en la beta John tenía sus animaciones originales. Una pena.
With the drinking one at the end. it’s no secret that Arthur has a need to look intimidating and will every once in the while throughout the story show his insecurity. An example of this is when you go back to rob the valentine bank in the first cutscene bill says to uncle or Karen Arthur doesn’t want to do the heist or he’s a quitter and Arthur quickly says he’ll do it (this explanation is whack and the actual cutscene in “Sodom, back to Gomorrah” makes more sense
John however has few insecurities or less
Yes, that is true and I understand what you're saying. I have seen Arthur being vulnerable about his insecurities many times. It is a cute little detail that he confesses to being drunk to strangers.
John's sprint feels so strong, I love it
Arthur: Big body, smaller head.
John: Big head, small body.
My head cannon is that the reason John is more I suppose stiff is because he is paranoid unlike Arthur he is more relaxed because he already knows the end is coming and he’s fine but John on the other hand he is scared of death and maybe what will happen to his family if he’s no longer around
But the government haven't come for John yet
He’s not paranoid lol
Exactly the video this community needed
this deserves more likes bc of all the effort, great video!
Thanks a lot 😊
"John morgan"
Micah kills Arthur.
John: "It's John Marston, Micah!"
Its the fact that Arthur is an actual seasoned gunslinger and generally good with his guns. John's only now truly learning what its like to be a gunslinger, hbut he doesn't become ever as seasoned as Arthur. Only truly becoming somewhat of a great gunslinger by RDR1.
Nah by the time he reaches American Venom he shows the same skill as Arthur
The downplaying is insane
I see that Arthur fanboys haven’t gotten any less annoying…
about the leaning forward when switching between first pov and third pov; if you look in a mirror while in first pov the character seems to hunker down as if you are in combat or attempting to be stealthy that’s why he seems to lean down. idk why this is, also your walking speed in first person is faster than it is in third person
Can tell you put a lot of effort into this video. Well done I’m subscribed

It would have been awesome if you would have added the comments they make when they skin an animal next to the horse. Arthur sometimes says “Not a bad hunting, boy” and John can even talk Spanish saying “Tranquilo mujer”
I was thinking about including the dialogue differences in various scenarios but then it would have taken me a long time.
Fun fact yawning is a way the body tries to get more air into the lungs, so makes sense arthur would yawn once his stamina depleted
Me watching them both run into the water and for a moment forgetting John can't swim until he started drowning immediately 😅
Was the location for running 0:49 chosen at random or is it a nod to Forrest Gump? 🤔

Another small deadeye detail, the color filter for Arthur sweeps right to left while for John it sweeps left to right
I dig how John's deadeye sound is the same as the first game. sounds badder ass to me
I like the detail of Arthur's right arm being stiff. That way he can draw his gun faster if he gets surprised.

i genuinely only thought this game had one walking animation, what an eye opener

When you get there go to the north of these islands and you will find these huge fish and they are kind of black and you can catch them
What the hell is John's running animation with the large fish it looks so goofy 🤣🤣
That's because that's how the actor ran. All movements were mocap even npcs
Lol arthur hauls ass and john just makes it look easy
Thank you!
Arthur's running animation is weird.
@@Whocares158
Thank me for what?
John’s run always felt so slow to me for some reason
So you're telling my john closes his only working eye while aiming?
John looks like the cop chasing Flint Lockwood.
Running with Arthur with the stiff controls make it really cool
Also arthur might have a longer right arm compared to his left.
Arthur actually keeps his right hand closer to his holster so he can draw faster if he gets into a fight, Putin actually walks the same way.
John carries his arms with each step while sprinting where as arthur just throws his arms
Edit: Man, looking at the depleted Dead Eye Core animation for Arthur makes my own eyes hurt, Dead Eye requires a LOT of focus and eye movement, imagine what your eyes will feel like after that, they'll feel like burning.
the way John runs with that large fish is hilarious. like a kids cartoon character. Looney Tunes 😂😂😂
and he runs like Sonic The Hedgehog
I crack every time I see him running with the fish 😂
Arthur looks like his entire life is heavy.
Awesome video, so well made !! ^^
