  • Where does one start? As a youngster growing up in Pretoria, the weekend highlights were certainly catching Piet Botha (Wildebeest or later Jack Hammer) live in Sunnyside or Hatfield for a jol!
Piet Botha was larger than life to us back then; a rocker, and more importantly, a rebel figure, sticking it to the system, an inspiration!
Later in life, when my wife and I started our own venue, she suggested we invite Piet Botha and the Lyzyrd Kyngs (Arthur & Rudolph Dennis and AJ) to come and play at our backpackers. I was not convinced, why would these guys, with their, in my mind; god-like superstar fame play at our little venue?
Long story short... My wife made some calls, and it was arranged, just like that, Piet Botha and the boys were on the way!
With the passing of Piet Botha, one sentiment was echoed amongst all his fans and friends. A humble giant! He made everyone feel like a friend and part of a family. Loved from that first handshake to the last goodbye hugs that followed after every event we shared.
At one of Piet's visits to our house, I asked him if he could play a tune on my dad's guitar. You see, as I explained to Piet, I had recently lost my father to cancer, and it would be great to hear the old guitar sing again, at the hands of a master!
Piet promptly picked up the guitar, and without uttering a word started playing this little piece, and that was that!
My dad's struggle with cancer and this story was shared, and a song was later written by Ian Goosen (Garden Route) called "Pa se Guitar".
I discovered this video and pictures I had from some of the events we shared. I thought I'd share it with you all in honor of a true gentleman, a man that made an impact on so many peoples lives! Respect, Love n Sunshine Oom (Bra) Piet Botha!
    Sien jou weer...
