- In this video I’ll be going through one of our recently imported Japanese Yamaha U3 upright pianos. We do an in depth look inside and out of this piano to show what to expect in one of our imported Yamaha U3 pianos. The U3 is one of the best upright pianos ever made thanks to Yamaha’s brilliant design and incredible craftsmanship. When properly refurbished these pianos can last several decades.

I recently bought a JDM Yamaha U3 from a dealer where I live (not the US) who imports all of his pianos from one supplier, Takamota Pianos. The U3 I bought is from 1967 (ser:66x,xxx) and looks and plays every bit as nice as the one in this video. It also came with a JUPA certficate. (if you know, you know). The dealer also gave me a 12 year warranty.. If you do your homework and buy right you will certainly reap the rewards. Thanks for sharing this great instrument.
Thanks for sharing this video. This is useful for someone like me, adult learner. I’ve been playing for 18 months, and during that time, I’ve been researching different pianos, and weighing up whether to buy something new or used. This information gives me more to work with, when trying used pianos and viewing them too.
Super informative bro! Lookin to buy a u3 in October! Would love to chat then
Excellent video. How old is that U3?
wow, you make that piano look like doll-size! Are you like 8' tall?? LOL
What about the rapid repeat of the notes of an upright as compared to a grand? I have heard that small springs can be added to give the hammers a more rapid return; could this be done when refurbished? Nice instructive video.
Do these pianos get louder around the 30 year mark? Mine is extremely loud and it's driving me nuts. The hammers don't show too much in terms of wear.
Is it a Do Re Mi rebuild???
I like your channel.
Tenho um YUS3, e gosto do Timbre.
Who do you get them from in japan ?
Probably an operation such as Doremi. There's a big business around exporting JP Yamahas.
Grey market...
This can be bad news. They are “grey market” pianos and Yamaha will not support them or honor any warranty. The many different kinds of wood in them were conditioned specifically for the climate in Japan; they may not perform properly in many American climates, and they may not be stable or as durable. Temperature and humidity greatly affect pianos and these were made for Japan, not America.
Oliver,
This is the exact sort of misinformation that I made this video to clear up.
Firstly “Grey Market” refers to new products being imported and sold in parallel to products sold by authorized dealers. These are used pianos and therefor not “Grey Market”.
As for the wood conditioning.
Name one other piano company, instrument manufacturer or wood furniture company that claims to condition their wood for the USA climate.
I believe there to be none. Also, let’s think about how broad the climate is in the US. What sort of target are they aiming for?
These pianos are older than 10 years and do not qualify for any sort of manufacturer warranty anyway. Instead, they are warrantied by my store.
If there were ever a part that needed to be replaced, there is no shortage of replacements available not only from Yamaha direct, but a plethora of other piano supply houses.
Feel free to give me a call if you would like to discuss further!
Some people just repeat what they have read elsewhere, with no real data to support their comments. I own a similar U3 here in Spain, close to the Mediterranean and, trust me, it is the most tuning stable instrument I have owned. So much for "Japan only instruments"!
@@SeattlePianoCopleasant and kind response to a lunatic 😂
Yeah that’s just nonsense from piano dealers who don’t want to lose sales in this way
The grey market issue is Yamaha's way to bolster its new piano sales. Unfortunately, dealers such as Faust Harrison in NJ continue this falsehood. When I inquired about trading in my well maintained and refurbished mid 1980s Yamaha U3 for a Bechstein A124, they threw me the "grey market" issue at me when they said my serial number came up as such, offering me US$2,000. They lost a sale from me.
