Traveling from the US to Switzerland for the first time ever in 3 weeks! Zermatt is my first stop followed by the Junfrau region and Lucerne. You guys have helped me SO much with planning. I feel so confident going on my first international solo trip.
14:39 hi!! Why don’t you recommend doing Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat on the same day? I’m going to Switzerland this summer and was planning on doing a day trip to Zermatt from Bern and buying the Peak2Peak pass. Also, we wanted to see the Riffelsee lake on the way up to or on the way down from Gornergrat.
Great question! We have lots of thoughts on this, but the simplest is that we 100% recommend Gornergrat but would probably recommend going somewhere else besides Glacier Paradise. That’s just our opinion, so of course you can do both with the Peak2Peak Pass if you want to!
Okok! Thank you! All your content has been really helpful for planning our trip!! I’m using your Jungfrau region guide to plan the itinerary for the days we’ll be there 😁
First, I want to thank you guys for your videos. They were super helpful in planning our trip. Now, having just returned from Switzerland with Zermatt as our last stop, I have a few things to say. One, the hiking is top-notch, that's for sure, and the views on a sunny day are incredible, however...Zermatt is billed as a car free town. Unfortunately, there are so many mountain bikers and E-taxis zipping around, its actually dangerous to be a pedestrian on their narrow streets. My wife who is half-deaf was almost killed several times. There's also a ton of construction going on, with cranes marring the village's skyline. Lastly, Zermatt is mostly hotels. While we were there in shoulder season and the crowds weren't so bad, I can't imagine this village at peak capacity; it would be a nightmare. On the plus side, Golden India restaurant near the Gornergrat Express station is amazing! The more you know...
Remind me all beautiful and eventful memories we have at Zermatt. We arrived on June 20 and stuck there for extra day due to flooding and landslides. Not the best weather we got but what a beautiful village Zermatt is. Thanks for the video.
Hello Jana & Brett! Thank you for your restaurant recommendation. We are at the Republic right now. The burger is very good!!! We are having a great time here in Zermatt. Thank you for your guide!
Thanks so much! It can still be cold in April and there can still be snow that might keep some mountain activities closed. We actually made a video where we go month by month and tell you what you can expect for weather and places that would be open/closed. Jana & Brett, love your videos! Question: is there no train from Visp to Tasch? I've looked on many sites, and even though some state there is a train, it is actually a bus at least part of the way. That means 3 trains and a bus from Interlaken and we will have suitcases 😖 Thank you!
There was damage to the rail line earlier this summer and it’s still being repaired. So it’s usually a train, but right now there is a replacement bus running instead!
If I have the swiss travel pass how do I purchase tickets for the trains and cable cars in Zermatt. Are these purchsed using the SBB mobile app. Also for riding swiss trains from one town to another does the swiss travel pass appears on your phone in the SBB app
Hi there! You can purchase tickets on the app, or at the station. It's a little difficult on the app because you'll need to know which routes are covered or only discounted by the Swiss Travel Pass. But it can be done!
Hi @philamongthehills501, if you have a Swiss travel pass (full), you don’t have to buy train ticket from one town to another, you will just present your Swiss pass together with your passport to the inspector while on the train but make sure you put the date on the Swiss pass on the day that you’re using it, otherwise they will tell you off or either give you penalty (unsure how much). Same if you’re using bus or boat. In regards of buying tickets for the cable cars, I suggest you buy it from the station so you can show them your Swiss travel pass for 50% discount (this is for full Swiss travel pass). If you buy full Swiss travel pass, it includes the glacier express but you need to book your seat online in advance and purchase lunch if you want to. There’s a glacier express train that runs from Chur to Zermatt or if you want a longer ride, you can do it from St Moritz to Zermatt (which was about 7 hours of enjoyable scenery). I hope it helps. I just been to Switzerland and just came back yesterday, so it is still fresh in my memory 😊
We went to Restaurant Alphitta as you guys recommended, lunch and desserts, it was beautiful! Hi there! This sounds great! Bern is only about an hour or so from the Zürich airport, so not a problem at all to go ahead and get there. Depending on how early your flight is, you could consider spending your last night in Lucerne as well so that you don't have to change locations. We mention the Peak Pass at the end of this video. In general, we think the Half Fare Card is better, but of course that depends on your specific itinerary.
If you stay at a hotel in the area, they will give you the Pass for free when you check in. It provides free public transport in the area, so you just hop on - no need to buy a ticket or show the pass (unless asked). If you want to use a discount on a local attraction, just show the card when you are purchasing your ticket. It's that simple! :)

I was going to buy the HotelCard but then I read in their T&Cs that it’s only available to residents of Switzerland, EU/EFTA countries incl the UK. They say that if you don’t have a valid residence in any of those countries then they reserve the right to cancel digital and physical orders and any hotel bookings already made. Do you know if this has happened to anyone outside of the EU?
We won’t have time to see Gornergrat and Glacier Paradise unless we go on the same day. You said that you don’t recommend doing that. So which option would you recommend? Gornergrat or Glacier Paradise?
@@AplinsintheAlps Sure you're not but at least get the name of the town of the video right. We won't expect you to pronounce all the neighbourhood cities perfectly. Tsermatt is not Zhermatt. 😉
So what is the correct pronunciation. I also taught Applied Phonology for ESL Pronunciation and retired from lecturing at university in 2015 after 34 years. You can use an approximation of IPA. I don’t use it myself as I have differences with the International Phonetic Association at Cambridge. Also can you say what it means derived from native Swiss dialect and it’s relation to the name Matterhorn? This has reference to Ancient Rome. BTW only three mountains use “ the” as in the Matterhorn , The Eiger, The Youngfrau. What are the meanings of these names? I happen to know. All other mountains in English begin with “ Mount….” as in Mount Everest, Mount Shasta, Mount Fuji. Why then do these Alps mountains begin with “ the”? There is a historical answer. And yes I used “ Alps” as a plural adjective and “ a” before “ historical” because these are correct. Now it’s your turn.
seriously? look at the quality of this content and you literally picked the only thing you could possible complain about, and it’s such a stupid thing. grow up

We won’t have time to see Gornergrat and Glacier Paradise unless we go on the same day. You said that you don’t recommend doing that. So which option would you recommend? Gornergrat or Glacier Paradise?
You can visit both on the same day if you’d like. But if you can only pick one, we always recommend Gornergrat as the best activity in Zermatt!
@@AplinsintheAlps You are always so good to respond to my questions. Thank you so much!
Aren't your hotels, food and transportation a business expense if you show them in your video?
Ok. She’s super adorable. No offense to her partner. Just a compliment.
He agrees! :)
Insider tip: pronounce the name of the town correctly.
We’re definitely not native speakers 🙃 But we do our best to pronounce places like the locals do!
Now it’s your turn.
seriously? look at the quality of this content and you literally picked the only thing you could possible complain about, and it’s such a stupid thing. grow up
It sounds like you're throwing all your money away for nothing.
Why do you say that?
@@AplinsintheAlps Honestly, I don’t think Zermatt is worth the visit considering how much it costs.
@@AplinsintheAlps Parking 16CHF+ Shuttle ticket 17.20CHF + Peak Pass 244 CHF...
Gotcha, we totally understand! Trips to these places can be expensive, for sure. But for many people, they are once in a lifetime bucket list opportunities, and totally worth the investment. We're sorry it didn't feel worth the cost to you!
