Hand In Glove was the bands first single released in May 1983. It peaked at No.3 in the UK Indie Chart. A remixed version of the track appeared on The Smiths debut album in 1984.
Lyrics
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different-because it's us
Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
I really don't know and I really don't care
Hand in glove
The good people laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we have something they'll never have
So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath
If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath
The good life is out there, somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer
But I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again.
#TheSmiths #HandInGlove
RIP Andy Rourke. Amazing bassline in this song.
More of a bass spiral and helter skelter. Terrific playing. Mike Joyce commented on this, saying Andy's playing was in a world of its own.
@@MartianTom Mikes comments were a lovely tribute so much so that I wanted to listen to this one again
Yes Andy is the best and we can always hear him. I’m in the middle of covering this with a more electronic feel but wanted to play his opening bassline as a tribute. Would love to post it soon.
his basslines are always amazing. not just in this song.
“But I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again”
That is such a true line if you know what I mean, and applies to so many of the REAL good people in our lives; it is so sad.
Well after 1987 that was partially true.
Lies! The songs about Marr
I know my lot too well.
Sad...
How is your first single THIS good? One of the greatest bands hands down.
I'll tell you what ... a number of bands have had a great intro release. But then fall away. They can't repeat the success. The Smiths, by contrast, very clearly do not end up in this category.
its funny bc this single actually somewhat flopped… this charming man and then their debut album later on propelled them into the spotlight
I love your pfp!
@@arrow4749 I heard it on the radio a bit in lateish summer 1983 though it wasn't a chart hit. Liked it from the off. Then This Charming Man got somewhere just outside the Top 20 late on that year, and What Difference Does it Make? broke them through bigger early the next.
Wich is also probably their greatest track tbh
Man andy is a bloody good bassist without that signature bass in all the smiths records they wouldn't be what they are thank you.
Great bass player.
Yeah Morrissey and marr are beasts...but have you ever zoned in on that bass? Dudes a monster!
The whole band was amazing.
Johnny marr, guitar.
Andy Rourke was a bass god, sadly underrated though
JR - Sadly underpaid too. Moz should give Andy $1 million dollars right now. Mike Joyce got paid, Andy Rourke got screwed. Best bass player I've ever heard.
Morrissey's bands (Smith's being as much Marr's as Moz's band, let's give credit where it's due) are always aces all the way
this band gives me songs for memories i didn't know i needed a song for.
You are correct
So right
I just discovered the Smiths and I'm in love.
MR FBI MAN lpl
Enjoy!
Nice. Good music never gets old.
So much good 80’s stuff to discover!
greetings
This is the best smiths song imo. I think the guitar/bass riff is fucking sick and the lyrics stick with you after hearing it just a couple times. Idk I just never get tired of this song
Init such a tune
Maybe your favorite but it’s probably not their best. Its really good but its definitely different from a lot of their other hits
Superb track, but a tiny bit shrill. For me it's "Headmaster Ritual".
What does imo mean. Also I couldn't agree more
@@Tajik-840 IMO (in my opinion)
Hand in Glove never gets old, long live the Smiths
The most romantic song ever written!
even better cause its about two men!
@@valhater9000 slay
@@valhater9000 real!!!!!
And it's universal. It WAS probably written about two men, but it applies to everyone. I'm straight and this song fucking destroys me.
the biggest gay song ever 🔥🔥🔥🔥
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different - because it's us.
I've yet to see a more powerful declaration of love than this one.
A very powerful song. I used to listen to it thirty years ago when I was preparing my degree in English. It still has a strong power on me. The Smiths are unique. No other group is like them. Very special. awesome !
"The goodlife is out there, somewhere so stay on my arm you little charmer" :)
Best line in the song
I still have my little charmer. ....she's married now but we are still in touch. My "sister." Amen. As best as can be.
1984, sitting in my room, alone, and unemployed, one evening. BBC Radio One's David Jansen introduced this song. That was the line that stood out and gave me some hope.
😍
Best lyric of all time
I love Morrissey's self indulgent, immature, and vain lyrics. It's all human and real.
"And it's not like any other love
This one's different because it's us"
Trying to find the beauty of the mundane, or as Morrissey put it, make the ordinary extraordinary is the most poetic thing a rock band ever did.
I love the line "The sun shines out of our behind's" lol
Unlike what you've posted
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
No, it's not like any other love
This one is different, because it's us
Hand in glove
We can go wherever we please
And everything depends upon
How near you stand to me
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care
Kiss my shades
Hand in glove
The good people laugh
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
Yes, we may be hidden by rags
But we've something they'll never have
And if the people stare
Then the people stare
Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care
Kiss my shades
So, hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath
If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath
For the good life is out there somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer
But I know my luck too well
Yes, I know my luck too well
And I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
"it's not a shame, no..."
instead of "kiss my shades"
I always thought it's "This one is different because it's soft", like holding hands with gloves :0
Hœmø§ĕxųæł
It's my share
What is it?
40 years on, never gets old!
Very underrated bass player
I agree so much!!!!!!!!
I'm a massive Marr fan boy.. Now I might be a Rourke fan boy.. Zoning out to the bass is mesmerising
My mum used to work in the hacienda and she would see the smiths performing there its amazing
19 May 2023
Just 5 days ago it was the 40th anniversary of The Smiths first single release, the wonderful Hand In Glove, and now just days later we lose Andy Rourke.
Amazing to think that Andy was only 19 when that first single came out.
Very shocked by this terrible news.
RIP Andy Rourke.
Seeing The Smiths twice in 1984 and 1985 at the DeMontfort Hall here in Leicester are still two of my most favourite concert memories ever.
Through his music Andy will be with us forever.
The title has also another meaning: Handing Love
You m8... are a fvckin' genius
@@juandiegohernandezzavala4788 thanks
holy cow i'd never noticed that
yes, and hand in love? too
👐 that actually makes more sense. Morrissey doing word play than talking about gloves
Morrissey's vocals in this is top notch
It's so satisfying
This song used to mean so much to me,
It was encapsulated in time and space,
It was about a consuming love and I experienced it,
It brought such emotions rushing in at once,
Now that is all gone and life has changed,
Those that are depressed, know that life changes, the things that are crushing you today will dissipate with time. After all wasn't it Morrissey who said "time proves everything?"
Estaba deprimida: me sentía sola y desgraciada, era pesimista y malhumorada, creía que "life its a pigsty" y que yo era "unlovable".
I think i understand.
Morrissey's and The Smiths' songs were with me during my adolescence and some of my youth; as many i felt identified, accompanied and even consoled with their lyrics, which talked with a brutal honesty that touched my shoulder and my heart.
I was depressed: i felt alone and unhappy, i was pessimistic and moody, i believed that "life its a pigsty" and that i was "unlovable".
Time goes by; you meet people, places, hobbies. Life gets better, but you have to work for that to happen. You have to want a better life and surround yourself with positive people, things and situations.
Morrissey and The Smiths will ALWAYS be my dearest artists and everytime i listen to their songs they move me. I even got a tatto of M on my ring finger, as a symbol of commitment (I know, I know...), but the time in which i interpreted their songs as a reflection of my life and emotions passed, and that's how it should be :) In the same way that the latest Morrissey albums are not so self deprecating and pessimistic :))
@@palomac.a.3412 Exactly, you got it.
Listen to Rubber Ring
Bit gay
RIP Andy. A much better bassist than anyone ever gave him credit for. Check it out, he was brilliant, original and exciting. A sad loss.
"i just wanted to use the theme of complete loneliness. it was important to me that there’d be something searingly poetic in it, in a lyrical sense, and yet jubilant at the same time."
Is this someone's reference ?

RIP Andy Rourke. One of the greats, showing it right here.
Takes me back to the summer of 2019 when I first started falling in love with The Smiths
I used to play and There is a light that never goes out continuosly on repeat i discovered The Smiths at a time when I thought life couldn't get any better and I had this wonderful feeling which a lot of people have when they listen to The Smiths. It felt like they were singing about my life and telling me that there is hope and the stars will shine again and it did ultimately get better
Morrissey's poetic and heartbreakingly beautiful words and voice Johnny's magical guitar and Mike and Andy's wonderful rhythm section kinda changed and saved my life I'll always love the Smiths 🤟
remember kids: this song was based on moz and johnnys “friendship”
is johnny gay too? bc he co-wrote this song w Moz
Gayyy!!!
Johnny Marr is not as was never gay so don’t insinuate shit.
@@garridocarlos98 much like every other song
Didn't know that, hmm thanks
I never focused on the bassline until I read another comment about it and now I can't stop zoning into it. 🔥✨ I love this song.

VIVA THE SMITHS!! 🤘🇲🇽
Muito bom som

Tamo junto!!! Nós éramos felizes e não sabíamos!!!🇧🇷❤

This was the first song by The Smiths, based on Morrissey and Johnnys friendship.
This was also the last song they performed live.
The last lyric Morrissey sang live was "I'll probably never see you again."
The song that was about their friendship now sounds like it's about their friendship dying.
Bassline in heaven, RIP A. Rourke
Can’t choose between this version and the one that appeared on their debut, I really like the ambience of this way
Very Big Nostalgy......old years...happy years😢😢
This is one of the most beautifuly mixed smiths songs.
My buddy showed this to me last year and ever since The Smiths has become one of my favorite artists.
This is pure poetry. If you look "genius" up in the dictionary you would find this song!
"We will go wherever we please, Everything depends upon how near you stand too me" - Interesting words for what were going though in 2020
Hahaha. True
2:49 - best bass note ever committed to tape.
To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable!
the passion in this one note - wow
Rip Andy, great bass player and this one was the first of many great bass lines ❤x
Their first single, and their best. Both sides. Just a magnificient gem of its time.
Last song played in final concert
Their absolute best song

Because he sounds like he sings, "Natasha" in the instrumentals, I like to imagine that this song is about a night we met on a Mancunian night out.
I’m from the USA. What is it about northern england (Manchester especially) that creates so many truly great artists? Hopefully someone from Manchester can enlighten me:)
Constant rain, mass unemployment, nothing for young people to do. People wanting to get their frustrations heard. Not too disimilar from the collective set of circumstances that birthed your Seattle music scene in the mid 80s-90s I imagine.
@@MS-eb8cf nice answer. You’re probably right. Affluence kills creativity then:)
@@guinnessharvey4476
I’d its more just young adults finding solace in music and an escape from such things, or learning instruments as a hobby because the weather outside sucks all the time!
@@MS-eb8cf i would agree with you. Although the great music coming from Sweden, Finland, Norway isn’t exactly ground breaking:))
I'd recommend reading Johnny Marr's autobiography, Set the Boy Free, which sets the scene and explains how certain working class Northern kids lived and breathed music (and fashion etc) and some of the really talented ones broke through and made a living out of it. Not so easy now, it seems. You're more likely to get success if you're from a privileged background or you're from stage school and thrown into some manufactured band.
