Lyrics
Upon the sand, upon the bay
"There is a quick and easy way" you say
Before you illustrate
I'd rather state
I'm not the man you think I am
I'm not the man you think I am
And sorrow's native son
He will not smile for anyone
And pretty girls make graves
End of the pier, end of the bay
You tug my arm, and say "give in to lust
Give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll
Soon be dust"
Oh, I'm not the man you think I am
I'm not the man you think I am
And sorrow's native son
He will not rise for anyone
And pretty girls make graves
(Oh, really?)
I could have been wild and I could have been free
But nature played this trick on me
She wants it now
And she will not wait
But she's too rough
And I'm too delicate
Then, on the sand
Another man, he takes her hand
A smile lights up her stupid face
(And well, it would)
I lost my faith in womanhood
I lost my faith in womanhood
I lost my faith
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of our behinds
#TheSmiths #PrettyGirlsMakeGraves
That guitar coda at the end always gets me, marr is a genius
You should hear on the 1983 Old Grey Whistle Test performance... It changed my life!
rhcp minor thing outro
Totally agree a work of genius
I couldnt agree more with ur statement
he went to yale and everything
Why is hardly anyone talking about how incredible the bass is on this song?
The bass here is incredible, too many people ignore bass
you have not spent any time on the comments of the smiths songs im guessing, 99% of the comments about the bass always involve how no one else is apparently talking about it lmao, self fulfilling prophecy vibes
Andy’s basslines rule
Omg. Bass fav. I love vocal too. Best
This is one of Rourke's easier lines (in fact, I can sing and play this one despite the weird rhythmic phrasing). However, it is what he does with that simplicity in this that truly blows my mind. Sometimes he ends the call and answer affect with thirds instead of the octaves and it sounds fucking amazeballs.
The Smiths will allways sound good, anytime, any century. They are timeless.😇😇
I’m 16, it’s 2021. I’m so in love with this band I wish I was introduced to it as a child 🤍
@Bianca Teixeira same! I love them and all of theirs lyrics are priceless
Actually are
@Bianca Teixeira a lot oif stuff i listened to as a child i either forgot about or when i listened to it as an adult it sounds really different because im actually listening to it properly, all instruments and vocals. listening to these guys while i was a child would have not been a good move, dont think i would have liked them back then
but of course thats just me being honest with myself like 99% of people on youtube do not do
@Bianca TeixeiraSmiths are the best... 2nd best (though musically better than the Smiths) Alan Parsons Project... loves of my life them two
Always loved how this songs instrumentation starts off in an cheerful manner and when the drop arrives it descends beautifully into a dramatic interlude. The Smiths Instrumentation remains undefeated to this day, maybe with The Strokes coming close.
great comment
Wow. Agree with you
I get similar vibe with theres a light that never goes out.
Rush were far better. YYZ for example
Or a farewell to Kings
"I could have been wild and I could have been free
But nature played this trick on me"
pure poetry
Genius lyrics
i could have been wilde
IS THIS THE GAY? IS THIS
One of Rourke's most underrated bass lines. Gotta love it.
It’s so simple but has so much grove
its brilliant love it on this track.. drives it all the way through to Marr's outro
La mejor banda de los ochenta , siempre geniales , Andy Rourke. R.I.P. ❤
The timeless thing about the Smiths' music is it's so out of the box it's impossible to date. It hangs in the ether, never going away.
"And on the sand, another man, he takes her hand
A smile, lights up her stupid face, oh well it would,
I've lost my faith in womanhood" It describes the pain so beautifully.
God bless you, Andy.
This bass line is the best.
RIP
All of them still alive
@MENTAL tISSUE no they're not
@Clay Johnson which one are we talking about?
@MENTAL tISSUEandy
i’ve had this outro on repeat for days now!! marr is a genius
Listen to Nurnburg - Zorstka
They basically took that outro riff and turned it into an entire song, I really enjoy it
@Adam so good!!!!
@Adam holy shit I never thought of that
This song is pure art.
I love this song so much.
Especially the guitar bit at the ending, so perfect.
The outro is so haunting yet beautiful.
Long Live The Smiths
I love how it starts with a reference to one of his other songs🤣
I can only imagine telling my friend "look I wrote this poem about how all women want to do is fuck" and he writes a melody this beautiful for me to recite my poem. Morrissey has no idea how awesome his life is
OK, fair, but it's a beautiful poem and Morrisseys solo career has been nothing to sneeze at.
@corzich No dispute here, I fucking love both of them. It just IS funny as far as a subject for a rock song, especially considering how good of a song it actually is.
"But nature played this trick on me" = I always took this as well as the rough/delicate line to mean Morrissey is gay. So that wouldn't have been particularly awesome for him
@Matt Yeah that's how I took it too, I just mean.. think of how many people write meaningful poetry that DON'T have Johnny Marr to soundtrack it
yet again he's depressed since the beggining.

I've heard that somewhere before 😂. Amazing
So he's gay, right? The guy's gay?
Smiths são fantásticos e Johnny Marr é um gênio. O dedilhado a partir de 3:03 é sublime.
Huh? Wha? Speak English.
@ClvrSwine speak Portuguese
@alguém Muito bom. Kkkkkk
Muito bom mesmo cara, melhor ainda é xingar esses gringos que não entendem kkkkkkk
This song's lyrics could easily stand as a poem (just like almost every single Smiths' song).
I am now 50 yrs young. I listened to these gentleman since I can remember. Never has there been anything to take its place in my heart and soul.♥️♥️🙏👍💪🤟
I too am a kindred spirit; their music was a kind of miracle; not flawless, but, for me, both timeless and a rare moment in our storied cultural narrative. Long live the Smiths for their haunting , melancholic strains and intelligent lyricism
cool except i wouldn’t exactly call Mr. Morrisey here a “gentleman”…
It Invokes our youth...❣️💔❤️🔥🖤...But in such a Bitter Sweet way that no one else can.
sorry'
This is my favorite song from The Smiths’ debut album!
That's high praise, because I've gone through the first three and so far I'd say this is their best one
aaamo todos os sons de Smiths!!!
😎💙💙💙
“Let us leave pretty women to men with no imagination.”
― Marcel Proust
The French have the concept of jolie laide, which means "pretty ugly." A jolie laide woman has features that aren't considered conventionally attractive, but she's still alluring. A good example is the actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.
jwh8999 He's saying that men with no imagination can't see beyond the surface.
Proust was also gay, so there's that subtext too.
on leur laisse !!!!
@Martine Türkler her yerde
the lyrics the music everything makes me wanna cry, love the smiths!
God bless The Smiths
God bless Morrissey.
Amen
아멘
Yes.
god save the smiths*
Aos 3:00 minutos meu coração sangra de emoção, que melodia bela e triste.
Amo demais The Smiths ❤
Simplesmente divino.
Even when I listened to the smiths as a kid still in high school, I still knew the end was special. Such a great song and maybe my favourite Smiths song
realmente la guitarra del final te da una sensación de cierre, te deja pensando
minha favorita. ♥︎
Vocals ✨ everything else wow ✨😭
Masterpiece
My favourite smiths song 😍
My favorite too!
Listening to this song makes me feel like I've seen a movie .
Amo a esta banda 💛
Sobre a areia, sobre a baía
Upon the sand, upon the bay
"Existe uma maneira rápida e fácil", você diz
"There is a quick and easy way" you say
Antes de ilustrar
Before you illustrate
Prefiro declarar
I'd rather state
Eu não sou o homem que você pensa que eu sou
I'm not the man you think I am
Eu não sou o homem que você pensa que eu sou
I'm not the man you think I am
E filho nativo da tristeza
And sorrow's native son
Ele não vai sorrir para ninguém
He will not smile for anyone
E meninas bonitas fazem sepulturas
And pretty girls make graves
Fim do cais, fim da baía
End of the pier, end of the bay
Você puxa meu braço e diz "ceda à luxúria
You tug my arm, and say "give in to lust
Desista da luxúria, oh Deus sabe que vamos
Give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll
Logo virá poeira "
Soon be dust"
Oh, eu não sou o homem que você pensa que eu sou
Oh, I'm not the man you think I am
Eu não sou o homem que você pensa que eu sou
I'm not the man you think I am
E filho nativo da tristeza
And sorrow's native son
Ele não vai subir por ninguém
He will not rise for anyone
E meninas bonitas fazem sepulturas
And pretty girls make graves
(Sério?)
(Oh, really?)
Eu poderia ter sido selvagem e poderia ser livre
I could have been wild and I could have been free
Mas a natureza pregou esta peça em mim
But nature played this trick on me
Ela quer agora
She wants it now
E ela não vai esperar
And she will not wait
Mas ela é muito dura
But she's too rough
E eu sou muito delicada
And I'm too delicate
Então, na areia
Then, on the sand
Outro homem, ele pega a mão dela
Another man, he takes her hand
Um sorriso ilumina seu rosto estúpido
A smile lights up her stupid face
(E bem, seria)
(And well, it would)
Eu perdi minha fé na feminilidade
I lost my faith in womanhood
Eu perdi minha fé na feminilidade
I lost my faith in womanhood
Eu perdi minha fé
I lost my faith
Mão na luva
Hand in glove
O sol brilha nas nossas costas
The sun shines out of our behinds
..You tug my arm and say : give in to lust give up to lust heaven knows we’ll soon be dust ....
Christ... best lyrics ever written
Fact period end of...
Nah.
She wants it now
She will not wait
But shes to rough
And im to delicate
Haha. Honestly. Best lyrics in this song.
Can't argue with that.
The outro riff is one of the greatest of all time.
I was reading "two can keep a secret" when the smiths and this song were mentioned and I was like woah, the Smith's are good, I better listen to this.
Same!
SAME HERE RN
Love that book!
The Smiths and Morrissey forever 😍
yes after 36 years they are still one of my favorite bands.I will always love them.
Andy Rourke is simply amazing!
He is an Excellent Bass player!!
i love the smiths
*This song is absolutely made for me👍*
dani cali calm down mate, it's an expression
The whole song is amazing but the ending is so damn good
The last 50 seconds of this song are genius
your damn right they are. so haunting yet gorgeous and warm at the same time i love it.
the last 3:44 minutes of this song are genius
End of the pier, end of the bay
You tug my arm, and say "give in to lust
Give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll
Soon be dust"
The beauty of this it’s perfect
So miserable but up beat , the perfect combo
otro temazo... los amo
Grandi smiths.. Very great band..
marr guitar kills me everytime
It's all in the Bass sweety!!!
@John Barry no doubt that bass is amazing as always

What a song!
What a song. Always.
I like it when the girl is like “oh really?”
Is that the one thing you like in this whole song?
@The Religion yes badman, good vocabulary
Everything is great
Andy Rourke is such an underrated bass player.
I listen to the songs on Spotify but come here to talk about it 🤗
i love so much the 0:38 ~ 0:50 part
it makes me sooo relaxed aAAA
i love this song
The outro is so beautiful
Everything that this song talks about happened to me, damn.
Im a new fan to the smiths, there is not one bad song, there all great, emotional and with strong powerfull lyrics
There's a few that i don't like to listen to as much like the rest, like Miserable Lie, but yeah, i wouldn't say it's bad.
Pure Beauty!
Total class 👌
Sempre amarei o Morrissey ❤❤❤❤
Sempre amarei o Johnny Marr
i love how the riff from reel around the fountain is at the end! and then the throwback lyric from hand in glove
3:02 onward has such a dismal, longing, restless, sighing feeling of discontent to it... wish there was more throughout
OK, anime avatar. Please, grow up.
A song with a similar vibe is "Murder Your Memory" by Title Fight
@ClvrSwine Let people enjoy shit dude.
I have a vhs tape of The Smiths at Old Grey Whistle Test I recorded from VH1 Classic back in early 2000 and let me tell you.. Johnny Marr's guitar coda at 3:03 is definitely my favorite part of the entire performance
early 2000 ? I thought the band imploded in the late 1980s and were then mired in High Court litigation over royalties etc
@Graham Grimmett It's called a *Recording* the performance was originally recorded in the 1980s and VH1 Classic reaired it in the early 2000s 🙄
@Testarossa Sosa if you had expressed yourself with limpid clarity to begin with, then I would not have irritated you in the way it would appear I have. No need to do a John Cleese on me because those episodes aired many years ago too.....
@Graham Grimmett Seems you're the only one that needed it explained more clearly, everyone else knew what I was saying so..........
Love all the OGWT broadcasts 🥲🥲 it’s like time travel
Long Live The Smiths❤️
that ending really makes me think of the past. it truly makes me wonder if i did anything good at all.
The most underrated comment in UA-cam history.
I love THE SMITHS
That bassline though
I have never related more to a song in my life.
You know you're dancing when you try to retire the dance and you keep going anyway...
I just came here to see this was a happy encounter... I was looking for a "new" sound, something different... this delivered it, thank you UA-cam
Anytime i,m feeling down I stick Smith's on,u just can't keep a straight face
I’ve never heard a more purple song in my life.
SO thankful to have seen Morrissey twice. So thankful.
Saw him on Broadway may 11th for the very first time, my wife had seen him a number of times. I was blown away by his vioce, his emotion( especially during I Wont Share You).....so glad i finally saw him live after listening to his music fo 30+ years
Lucky you 😭
But did u see the smiths twice
u are very lucky!
@Marc Info I went to the third day of his broadway run!! so good!
Pretty Girls make graves ♥
I've always pictured the scenario in this song in my head over the years!....Morrissey though, always stays in his 20s, looking perfect - which is a bit unfair! 😏
Jacqueline Morris hey I’m just commenting so u could come back and listen to this song again hope u enjoy
I lost my faith in womanhood
We will all one day be dust.
True story, I heard the guitar playing at the end in a dream years before I even heard of the smiths.
How was it when you then heard this song?
Cap
Me encanta esa voz 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Rest in peace Andy Rourke

Favorite song
13 and just kicked my vinyl collection off with this masterpiece
👌
🤦♂️🤦♂️ Bro we get it youre different
This song is on my playlist, and right after this song is a hard metal song lmao
Speaking of graves Darlin', for me it has been almost precisely 52 years 13 days 10 hours, about 6 minutes and 37 seconds... NOT THAT I AM keeping track or anything... and for Less 17 years I have been loving and feeling very protected the devil in the Lonn😘😘😘
I love that it references hand in glove
the saying pretty girls make graves was taken from jack kerouac’s book the dharma bums ,great book and great song
There's a Belorussian band called Nürnberg that took the outro riff and make a complete song based on it... Its called Zorstka
i was about to say that, great song and great band!
