Y'all I was just lookin for obscure indie songs on Bandcamp and stumbled upon this album, the anime album cover having caught my eye. I liked the sound so i looked it up on UA-cam and was pleasantly surprised by all the mystery surrounding it! I've always loved internet mysteries so it was super cool to stumble upon this by pure chance!
I forgot Aphex twin does that. I was going to do that and probably still will. I want to release my professional sound more thoughtful well made albums traditionally and the other ones very obscure and hidden around just to see what happens. Using fake names was an idea I had.
This is a really interesting video, and I love it when people take totally unique approaches to releasing their music! Just FYI, CDs don't tend to "distort" over time though, as it's a digital format. When there's an error/wear and tear on digital media, it will skip over the bad chunk of data, rather than the style of malfunction a deteriorating piece of analogue media (such as a cassette or record) would yield as the physical media itself wears down over time. To my ear, it sounds a lot more like a "quantizing" sound tool like Paul Stretch or a bitcruncher was used in the effects chain during recording to add a reactive layer of crunchy digital haze alongside the instrument tracks. Diving into the production of music is a rabbit hole, in itself :)
The data on recordable CDs is burned into a dye which does physically deteriorate over time. The rate of deterioration depends on the type of dye used (with Cyanine generally lasting around 10 years) and is accelerated by various environmental factors. I have dozens of examples of this "skipping" sound from bad discs (most stored in good conditions, untouched for 20 years) and if you dig out some old demos, I'm sure you'll experience it too!
@@Profoundemonium That's true for some brand's of CD-Rs, but the chances of an optical drive being able to actually read anything damaged enough to produce a constant noise like that (i.e. the entire audio sample) would be too far gone for an optical laser to track reliably. It's far more likely that it's experimental music using a cool effect. Additionally, if you actually listen to the music, you can tell the distortion is not subtractive from the audio source (like bit decay would be or any other loss), and rather it's an additive effect brought in on another track or in a aux return or such. It's just sitting on top of the mix. That's really not how the decay you mentioned sounds, either...and that's something I'm pretty familiar with, considering I still enjoy all my CDs from the late 80s and 90s because I haven't matured in taste since then.
@@Profoundemonium I just looked at all your other comments and now I surmise that this is YOUR release and you're trying to prevent your process from being exposed, mwah hah hah.

can a "deteriorating" cd actually cause such fuzz? the oldest cd I own is Nevermind by Nirvana, it's about 25 years old now and still plays the same as the day I got it.
Debunk File since this disc was most likely produced in the early 2000s or late 90s, u would have to burn the data onto the actual cd. burning at the wrong speed will cause “disc rot” to happen after approx 2-3 months, thus explaining the fuzz.
Must just be a rare bootleg made by a completely anonymous and unknown local band. It happens often. Also, anybody here familiar with the story behind the 1979 song, “Ready ‘N’ Steady” by D.A.? If not, it’s REALLY interesting and unique.
Fucj yeah I was waiting for a youtuber to cover this. Also if the og OP did make it, he'd probably want to give the album a whole mysterious story to it to gain traction. People dont usually check out music that someone just shares normally. Like have you ever listened to some soundcloud rapper's mixtape? I honestly don't think the op was the creator though, the distortion of the audio sounds way too real, like it actually has degraded over time. Besides, the last 2 songs of the album are legit barely audible from the excessive distortion. Why would you do that on purpose?
This is so funny, I recently stumbled upon Panchiko again and completely forgot it so mysterious a while back when I was getting into the mystery. Funny how I went full circle.
The disc can physically corrode and rot away due to the reflective layer reacting with the atmosphere and various chemicals (ink from the booklet, stickered labels etc.). It is very common among early 2000s CD-Rs and certain brands of factory-pressed CDs.
@@Profoundemonium That's extremely extremely rare and was mainly limited to discs pressed at a handful of plants in the mid to late 90s. And either way, it doesn't cause distortion like the kind attributed to it in the video.
