    Tips: Fish upstream. When you are casting out to current through an eddy, you have to mend your line a lot and will only have a small window of time for a natural drift. Your hits were coming inside the eddy, so you didn't need to cast out all the way to the downstream current. Keeping your fly on the inside of the seam of the eddy allows a much longer natural drift.

    ...Nice to see you catch one while fly fishing! However, you're forgetting everything that kindly gentleman taught you about casting that day, you're still casting it like a spinning rig, all arm instead of using your wrist. Also, as I recall from my old fly fishing days, you should make several false casts below your target area, lengthening your line with each false cast, and then changing the angle on your real cast to your target area. If you do it right, that "real" cast will be smooth, otherwise it will "Snap". Also, don't drag the retrieve through your target area, make sure the line drifts well passed that zone. Good luck!

      Have to agree with this comment. Your were not using a fly fishing cast technique! You looked like you were casting a lure! But a fun video and you caught a fish! Well done!

  • @brett9382
    @brett9382 2 роки тому +2

    With all the other tips in the comments I figure one more won't hurt. Always set the hook the direction that the current is flowing. The fish are always facing the direction the water is moving from so setting it with the current will set it into the fishes mouth rather than pulling it out of its mouth.

    Quick tip, walk up the river and cast up so the fish don't see you as they are facing the current they can see you if you walk down with the river. Also when ur behind the fish you tend to get more hook ups as ur striking towards the fish not away from it just how you were in the video.

    I am no fly fishing expert. Here are some tips I have received. Cast at 45 degree angle upstream to give yourself a longer drift. Mend the line and do not allow too much slack between you and the fly. Set the hook in and upward motion but not the force of bass hook setting. Great video and location. Glad you were rewarded with a fish. Patience is key.

  • @swagdaddy6954

    • @estebanmanon9925
      @estebanmanon9925 3 роки тому

      Isn't setting the hook to a side better? I think if you set it straight up you are taking the hook out of the fish mouth. If you set it to a side you are hooking thowards the sides of the mouth.

    Just some friendly tips, use your wrist more instead of your arm! Makes your casting a lot smoother and gets the flies out there. Also with that much slack line out your not setting the hook hard enough to connect with those fish. But other than that keep it up bro you’ll get it in no time

    Hey man great video I love seeing people getting into fly fishing. Your intuition for where fish are going to be is great and your casting isn't perfect but its really pretty good for how long you've been doing it. I think the number one thing that would immediately help you catch more fish is focusing on the drift of the fly. and making it look natural. As an analogy, most of your drifts in this video are the equivalent of burning a crankbait in 100% of the time, some fish might take if they're really aggressive but the smart ones will know something is wrong, that's why the fish was "missing" the take, he either decided last second he didn't want it or missed it because it wasn't floating still on the surface of the water. So how do you do it? Mending is hard right? so rather than casting across the current and making it really hard to get a natural drift, try setting up below the fish (a little off to the slower side or where you're aiming) and cast above them. You will have to continue to take in your slackline as the fly drifts towards you but it will usually be a really good drift. The other tip is that your hook set should be patient, immediate but not preemptive (with clear water its easy to set the hook to fast cuz you see the fish coming) and it should just be raising the pole as high as you can, not swinging the rod hard. Congrats on an awesome trip and beautiful fish!!

  • @Santi-gh6jm

    You should set up a double rig with your dry fly as an indicator and remember when setting hook on fly pull line down and lift rod up hope that helps any

    Btw if you want good places to fish, Utah lake is good for catfish and carp, strawberry reservoir is good for rainbows and cutthroat, deer creek has good smallmouth around the rocky areas, and that is the places I fish the most. There are plenty of lakes around and the ones up in the mountains most often have trout, but most other fish are in the flater areas.

    More wrist in your cast less arm.
    Cast up stream with rod at 10 o'clock instead of 7 with a little more tention. Just letting it float natural. Hookset from 10 to 12. You're not fishing for stripers. Also no need to be out far. Just roll cast to the inside of the eddys in those small current breaks and edge of the pool. Seemed to be where all your strikes came Which patters are everything in this. Maybe get yourself a longer rod also. Just a flick of the wrist is all you need. Good luck.

    If you ever come back to Medford OR try Medco pond. It’s about an hour away and you can catch tons of small fish (Bluegill, Bass, trout). Fun time if you don’t wanna go for the big ones

    DUDE! That’s my hometown. I grew up there in Dutch John and fished the Green my whole life. It’s some of the best fly fishing in the country. In fact my dad is the supervisor on that dam. Next time hit me up and I’ll share some secrets with you.
