I think this is one of those models that signals a changing of standards, and goes so far above and beyond in level of detail that previous 5 star level of detail models would no longer make 5 stars in comparison. Other models now have to measure up to this to get 5 stars.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 роки тому +35

I think so too - this is the first time I've seen a model of this detail with quality to match it... there's room for improvement, but it sure hits the spot for £160
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@SamsTrains definitely room for improvement on quality, but the level of detail felt head and shoulders over many of the models that got 5 stars from you over the years. The only detail features I think I've ever seen of heard of that this model didn't execute excellently were pre installed crew and rotating fans, and both of those are things I can only remember seeing a few times ever. There are a few things they included that I've only seen in reviews you've done in the past year or so, like the etched metal steps and the real dangling chains, plus some other rare and well executed detail features like the etched metal builder's plate accessories and the internal lighting. You've mentioned a couple times in the past that what you count as 5 stars has shifted a bit, and I think the requirements for 5 stars might have to shift up a bit further now that we have models like this to compare to.

@@SamsTrains I can live with the scratches on the paint and the couplers for this price, with all the other features you have with it. My last diesel, the new tooled Bachmann class 20, had costed me near the same price (GBP 153 with UK tax, retailer's price), it's a very good locomotive, but not at this level anyway. I have a good feeling for their class 37, hope they sort out the little mishaps. At least, the couplers...

@@richardserridge2767 Yeah it is, but it's £100 more for DCC sound & stay alive, compared to the Deltic DCC sound & stay alive version. I was split between choosing either but not both. :-(

Sam, further to my previous comments about the Deltic, mine has arrived and it looks and runs fabulously (it's DCC and the crawl is awesome). I had a small problem, in that some of the absolutely tiny steps at the corner of the body became detached and went missing when I first ran it. I emailed Accurascale last night (Saturday) at around 22.30 asking about the problem, fully expecting the same reply I had from Hornby - namely that they don't carry small spares and can't help. Two hours later at 00.30 on a SUNDAY morning I received a reply telling me that they would be dispatching the parts and I would receive them shortly. I'm flabbergasted by this, and truly hope that Accurascale thrive - fabulous products, great prices and excellent service. In case you're wondering, I have no connection whatsoever to Accurascale other than as a satisfied customer.

As a Midland and Western transition era modeller the Manor was the first Accurascale locomotive I ordered. Having seen the deltic features I had to order Brush type two 5544. When Accurascale get round to producing the centre headcode "Welsh" locos I will be ordering a couple of green ones. However, should Accurascale choose to produce a Landore allocated blue 37 with the "car headlight bracket" for the Central Wales line, then I will not be able to resist !!!!

I doubt that, but it may make them up their game. That's good, out of business isn't, as less competition always leads to higher prices and less choice. I am also sceptical about how long Rapido and Accurascale can / will keep pricing this low.

Fair review. I've been on RMWeb and whilst it's not your crowd the Accurascale guys are extremely customer focused. They've offered to exchange locos with less defects that yours had in terms of paint. I get the impression the email support is similarly prompt.
I think they've learnt a fair few lessons by this for the subsequent releases.
At £160 it's a heck of a lot of loco!
To be fair to them the subsequent loco's are increasing in price but none have gone through the £200 mark. Only the 92 approaches that but it has two working pantographs so two extra motors!

Hope they will iron out their teething problems on their next issues ! They deserve a substantial customer base.

@Sam'sTrains It's arrived, no marks on the paintwork, but one of the stepladders below the buffer in the corner needs re-glueing and that's all. Tested the coupling, it is at the right height for Hornby CDA China Clay hopper wagons and Bachmann Mk1 coaches. Maybe the plastic got warped on yours? You should be able to contact Accurascale for replacements. :-)

This is Accurascale's very first model? For a first go at this, it's absolutely immaculate. Best detailed diesel in your collection. The fact that there's only a few performance issues and some problems with the couplers that seem minor in comparison to the rest. This has to be commended. Especially for such a reasonable price.

Technically Accurascales first loco, however their sister company Irish Railway Models have released the 001 class (Irish loco) which I firmly believe is the gold standard of locomotives, I believe the 001 beats out the Deltic, though admittedly I havent purchased a Deltic as it's outside my area of interest, as well as coming in at a reasonably comparable price

Hornby? Bachman? You taking notes? A Class A locomotive that doesn't cost a fortune to be good. A stunning example of you get what you pay for minus the coupling issues. The crawl could be better but to me is dismissible as it is an express loco for main line passenger service. An excellent model that blows to shame the lemons from Hornby, Bachman, Dapol, and Heljan.

Hugely impressive effort and result from Accurascale. I have seen a few videos of the DCC version and the sounds are very authentic. I would have no objection to parting with £260 for that version given that other companies are asking as much as that or more for locos that are not built nearly as well. Everything about this, from the packaging, finish, detail, loco information and performance talks volumes about a company that is clearly determined to produce top quality, top performing products at top value prices. The only downsides weee the coupling issue which probably means this was tested on Accurascale wagons and coaches but not other makers and not supplying instructions on taking off the body- bet that will lead to a few ruined bodies needing replacing. I have every confidence Accurascale will address these issues very soon. In conclusion, the other manufacturers in the industry need to up their game and take this very seriously. Great news for the enthusiasts!

Oh btw, as for a crawl. We’ve put quite some study into starting and stopping motion dynamics of real locomotives for our modelling matching in the future. We’ve observed that the biggest, gigantic wheels of steamers almost immediately perform a full 1st rotation somewhere between 4 to 5 seconds. Smaller wheels in the post-steam era somewhere around 3 seconds. Consequently, a 'crazy' super slow crawl taking a lot of seconds for a full 1st wheel rotation at departure or small movement isn’t actually very much needed for being prototypical. This is our observation of course, and others may have different expectations.

I got my 9016 Gordon Highlander on monday, is absolutely fantastic. One of the bogie chain mounts had come loose in the box and a second disappeared during running in, but the loco is amazing and is even more powerful than the renowned hornby class 60. It can haul all 16 IIA biomass wagons and 14 bachmann mk1s on my relatively tight corners and slight gradients. I also really appreciate how the headcode digits are mostly misaligned, because they would never have been perfect in day to day operations. I didn't have any issues with my couplings, as they seemed to couple perfectly every time and only popped out once when some mk1s derailed on a corner and fell over. Agreed re torque at low speed, on test in my bedroom it took a bit to get going (although that was before I ran it in in the loft).
Still awaiting my sound fitted D9009 Alycidon from Rails though.
And now I'm excited for the 92 and the 3 37s I've preordered.

Great review Sam. I received my Deltic today and it looked great. I did have a small problem with one of the bogie chains being loose from the body and another small piece that had come off. Nothing serious. I did take a photo and sent it to Accurascale asking how and where to fit them back on and within an HOUR they had replied with the required information! They do have a series of videos on their website explaining how to fit/remove parts of the model which is quite handy. Agree having to unglue the chains to remove the body is a hassle -I've also order a crew set so will have to do it someday :-)

Definitely looking forward to more of accurascale’s products. The Manor and 37 sound amazing. If the Deltic has this kind of attention to detail and hopefully some reinforcement after tribulations from this model (which may be easy fixes), imagine what else they could do with the yet-to-come products and beyond. Personally, I’d really like to see them tackle the Class 28. It’s one of the few we haven’t seen for some time that I believe is in dire need of a comeback

  • @joobydooby

Unboxed mine today. One or two issues, bogie chain broken, a couple of small detail parts dislodged, found floating around in the packaging. Also, the hint of a cyanoacrylate fingerprint in the paint. All now fixed. Removed one coupling to add all the scale detail supplied, and replaced the other with one of better quality and an offset to correct the height issue. With regard to bits falling off - a classic manufacturing mistake. Pre-painted parts will simply not adhere to each other well. Any movement and the paint cracks and releases the component. Paint must be removed for the plastics to bond well. The bogie chains are a nice addition, but make body removal a chore - equally some notes on this task seem to have gone astray...
Runs like a Swiss watch. Just ordered the sound set on pre-order from Accurascale. Generally very impressed. Best bit? One hundred and sixty quid. Other manufacturers need to wake up and smell the coffee. With detail that matches a static model, and a mechanism that puts many in the shade, lacklustre sound fitted efforts from anyone in excess of two hundred and fifty sovs won't be tolerated...

A very fair and honest review with good points hinting toward the competition, I like how you say what you see with the same rigid standards to all. Well done Accurascale I agree with everything said about this model other than running due to having no means to try that myself yet. I have 55022 and 55005 from them with 55015 to come from Rails of Sheffield, also a class 37 on order and two class 31's. Rolling stock I have a rake of their haa hoppers and a rake of tiplers and some mk2 coaches pre-ordered. I'm also looking forward to the Cavalex class 56's of which I have 2 on order. Deltics are awesome engines and my favourite diesel. This is by far the best model I’ve seen. Looks great and running looks smooth. The couplings are in need of improvement as I would be annoyed if stock uncoupled on inclines, but your one seems to be ok on Gordon’s hill.

Just received a sound version of The Durham Light Infantry. As you show, the detail is incredible and far superior to that any other manufacturer has produced. The sound is impressive and the decoder allows more lighting control. I agree that the weight of the engine affects the slow speed running, however, that's not really a problem for me with an express locomotive. For £250, sound fitted, including postage, this is the best value locomotive I have bought, especially when I compare it to the £217 that Hornby are asking for their DCC ready Class 91. (I paid £200, with postage from a retailer and had to send it back for exchange due to incorrect gauge leading to derailing on points... poor quality control). Accurascale is clearly leading a change in standards that other manufacturers will have to follow.

Every praise you said in this video for this locomotive is absolutely justified. It's truly beautiful. The couplings are such a terrible shame it was so good, but then at one of the basics it fell down. I give them the benefit of the doubt that its just a early production issue and the paint issues as well. Aside from at 10/10 model. Truly great value here truly puts Hornby to shame. Great review, Sam 👍

That was very interesting and an impressive statement of intent from a new manufacture of locomotives.
I think the coupling issues need to be highlighted though, as it’s the sort of thing that could become endemic with all the releases of a manufacture it’s not called out immediately.
All that being said, will you order a class 92 now? As I would dearly love to see that review (given how poor the Hornby model now is).

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 роки тому +1

A statement of intent is quite right! But yes the coupling issue was very frustrating... could've been a one-off, but both couplings were the same, which makes that unlikely. But sure, I do hope to try the 92!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

great review of a brilliant looking, and working, model. I shall definitely give the class 31 a careful look. When will some of the other "manufacturers" realize that having their models built for them under contract means they are open to direct comparison with other companies using similar foreign manufacture and box stuffing?

Well, I've commented before about the current pricing from some manufacturers, especially for old tooling.
But this newly tooled, high-quality product, which has clearly been made with great care and reverence to the real locos is darned good value in comparison.
If my wife and budget allowed, I'd be ordering one for sure, I will be ordering one of their class 31's though regardless.

Hi Sam, just watched your review on the deltic. Top notch as usual. I’ve got one on order from rails Sheffield with sound. I was wondering what it would be like with Hunts magnet Couplings as you mentioned the nem couplings were a let down. I’m certain accurascale will do an urgent update regarding the body removal too as I’ve got the old men on order. Also I would of preferred the driver eating Bourbon biscuits 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 and the second man picking his nose. I’ll bet the competition are quaking in their boots.

Should see about getting a pack of their MGR Coal Hoppers that are coming out over the next year, the fantastic detail puts Hornby's 2003 model to shame (Let alone the 1980s one), especially considering Hornby lists a higher RRP per wagon!

Thanks very much for the review. Very excited, since I ordered a DCC sound one in blue from the Deltic Preservation Society well over a year ago. Apparently there have been issues with the sound versions which has delayed things a little. I'm fine with that - they are obviously doing their best to get things right. I am a little concerned with what you mentioned regarding coupling height, but we'll see how that works in practice with my rolling stock.

For too long now we've been forced to accept that somehow £150+ for a loco is loose change and that we're wrong to expect good quality, reliable models and customer service for what to most of us is a lot of money. It's great to see manufacturers coming into our hobby, bringing competition and giving us choice. This is an astonishing model for £160.

Ive just ordered a deltic in porterbrook purple. It looks absolutely gorgeous with the sheer amount of detail, this coming from a big steam engine fan. I bite the diesel bullet with a class 29 but this is insane in its level of detail and the price, as you say £160 is a lotofmoneybut in terms of value for money for what you get its worth it. Shame i have to wait until the new year to receive it.

    Another fine review Sam....
I would compare this in weight to the Hornby Dublo (Green) Co-Co Diesel, which I think was ultimately turned out by them in Deltic livery.....and obviously without the dreaded yellow ends. I would reckon the Hornby Dublo model, (an all die-cast body), was heavier
The Hornby Dublo was fitted with Traction Tyres and they proved their worth in every respect. As was common with Hornby Dublo, they usually ran some long distance, (hours of continuous operation), with a long train, whenever they introduced a new model.
Invariably this was run in the window of a store like Gamages, with a report of the test then featuring in the following months Meccano Magazine.
When my Dad bought me the Co-Co, (a locomotive was usually my main Christmas present), we were both struck by how powerful it actually sounded.
D9006 was the first Deltic we both saw at Leeds Central, when it brought in The Yorkshire Pullman......obviously without the dreaded yellow ends, and long before it carried a name.
Just watching it ticking-over was pretty impressive to me as a young 14 year old lad.

Bonus Brownie Points to the small model companies like Accurascale and Rapido to push the boundaries for a high detailed ready to run locomotive. These seem to be a steal at £160 before the inflation bubble expanded, and an even better price still today post covid and the extreme costs from the other top four manufacturers, especially Hornby. Got to say your reviews do highlight the pro and cons and this Class 55 Deltic doesn't escape your keen eye and testing of rolling stock. I am still waiting on my Porterbrook Gordon Highlander to arrive, and it looks as if this is a top scale model like the wonderful Class 24 range from Suttons Locomotive Workshop. Suttons (in my book) is a hard act to follow, and I look forward to their Class 25 that are due out, fingers crossed, this year. Thanks Sam, for your fair review as always.

My porterbroke purple Deltic arrived, similar coupling issues. With DCC the crawl is great. The sounds are fantastic, just not quite what I remembered from my childhood! There was a thrumming noise as they idled in the station that's not quite right, close but not 100% the same. DCC version at £260 is also great value I feel.

Interesting that you have that view of the Deltics. The prototype - the blue and white one in the National Collection - did have a large headlamp like the American locomotives (E and F series) and English Electric were 'asked' to change it on the production ones because it looked too American.

This looks to be right up there in quality with some of the high-end lines here in the states: Athearn Genesis, Atlas (Silver/Gold), Kato, Bachmann Spectrum, Rivarossi, Bowser Executive Line, InterMountain, and Broadway Limited Imports, to name a few. At a price of around 160 pounds, I’d say that’s a good deal - let’s hope Accurascale do a better job on the couplers next time.

  • @Damocles178
    @Damocles178 2 роки тому

This model truly is the epitome of what we get when Manufacturers care about the quality and aren't operating on reputation alone to sell things. Long may this standard continue. There's not a single detail Accurascale omitted from this at any point. Their Class 92 is going to be very special too from what I hear. The fact that they are actually going to bother with DCC controlled pantographs is astounding for third rail or overhead operation. That's something not even Hornby has done for their hybrid 802 class which is a model that could certainly use such a thing especially for what they charge (!) For example anyone that wants to accurately portray a Bi-mode 802 Class putting it's pantographs down as it enters a non-electrified zone; it would no doubt do wonders if they could control the pantographs via DCC. Of course it is fair to say that for most layouts with overhead wiring usually the pantograph will normally be up anyway but it's a lovely feature all the same.
