railroad, railway, some people say one, some people say the other. Here in the states some were called railroads, others railways. Guess it just depends^^@@BrecklandSpotting
Mister Sam, I have been watching your channel for over 6 years (circa 2017), and I am just now leaving my comment. Your videos are bloody brilliant; [they are] thorough, entertaining, humourous (when needed), witty, insightful, informative and instructive. It is always a joy whenever I see a new video of yours show up in my feed. You are a delightful chap. I enjoy your out-and-about mini-vlogs with Chloe, too. Lovely stuff, mate. Further, this old doctor has learned so much about locos, as well as this extraordinarily (expensive) hobby we in this esoteric community love so much. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Grazie! Arrivederci, Giovanni Marino, M.D.🇬🇧
22:4922:48 - bewildered by how you struggled so much with the keeper plate removal. I've recently had to do this, simply unfasten the 4 side clips with a thin jewelers screw driver, then press inward and lift upward the clip on the end towards the fuel tank side... Keeper plate pops free, no damaged keeper plate, no Damaged bogie frames etc.. The chains never even came into it! Yes, I'd say you diddled that up well and truly!
This class 37 is one of the best I have seen for a long time. That detail is amazing, the lighting looks impressive. The ease of fitting the DCC Decoder is just the icing on the cake for this one. This is a really fantastic diesel loco for the price.
So called "serious railway modellers" love to slag sam off on facebook groups but i dont see why, sam makes quality videos and fantastic insightful reviews
I’m actually quite pleased that Bachmann has produced a 37 in direct competition with Accurascale. It allows the 37 to be used as an accurate touchstone between current manufacturers as well as to chart the history of loco production using the previous models produced by manufacturers going all the way back through the older Bachmann models, Hornby’s offerings, the Lima effort and finally to the Tri-ang 1965 model. This will be the second model I will buy after seeing your review after the Rapido 16xx. Love the reviews :)
Oh-ho, here comes Accurascale beating the competition. In the first place I don't know why Bachmann brought out the downgraded new one, the first one was good! Accurascale are to be applauded for bring out Loch Lomond as sadly in real life this loco has been scrapped! This will bring happy memories for those who trundled behind the 37s weaving through the picturesque panorama of the actual Loch and Argyle Forest on the West Highland line to Fort William!
I think Bachmann probably re-tooled theirs before Accurascale announced theirs. It doesn’t really seem like Bachmann to copy another manufacturer, and to be fair Bachmann have been upgrading a lot of their diesels lately (ie: the new Class 20, 24, 25 and 47). Bachmann’s new 37 isn’t bad ether, but I do think that the Accurascale one is slightly better.
I bought one Sam, in the same livery that you chose. It’s so perfect I’m scared to get it out of the box !!! Accurascale smash it out of the park once again !!
While it’s not known wha the rest of 2023 will bring. I have a feeling this class 37 will be pretty high in the ranks during the “best trains of 2023” video.
Accurascale has done it again Sam. Their new Class 37 diesel locomotive model looks far more superior than Bachmann's version. It is totally worth 170 Pounds to buy this model from Accurascale but I do agree about the form over function problem on Accurascale's model. Overall, it is still a very nice looking model.
But it is an extra/improved detail over those already available. It is like comparing a loco with a buffer falling off against an older one which incorrectly never had them at all.
I've got one of these too, and I'm very happy with mine. I wanted a 37 for years, but for whatever reason, I never bothered with the existing Bachmann models. For reference, my model is 37027 'Loch Eil' in BR blue with the additional white stripe.
I think it goes to show how much Hornby and bachman along with other companies really are ripping people off Neither are cheap models But accurascale knocks everyone out of the park Brilliant details and a brilliant runner and you get a feeling of a really great value for money
The accurascale chains are friction fit. They will pop out with some firm pressure using a small grip or good tweezer. The sand pipes are designed to scale and intended to be cut if your curves are tight. Scoring it low isn’t a real reflection of the fact it’s a much superior mechanism to any of my other stock
I did try with tweezers... the parts broke before snapping apart - if they were designed to be snap fit, that didn't work on my example, Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What a magnificent locomotive. AccuraScale truly is changing the game when it comes to the value for money department. Now they just need to start making steam locomotives. Great video Sam
@@nigelericogden3200 their are already two 9F’s and two large prairies on the market, I don’t really see why we need a third (although the Bachmann 9F and Hornby Large Prairie are not great.). Also, I want to see a review of the Manor first, as apparently it is going to have a 3-pole motor…
Hi Sam. I know I've mentioned this before, but lets tackle the pricing issue. Most trades operate on a rule of thirds, i.e. if an item costs £50 to make you sell it to a shop for £100 and they sell it for £150, so both the manufacture and the retailer get a £50 profit. This is where the suggested RRP comes from. Where Accurascale is scoring over Bachmann is that they are effectively cutting out the model shops. Yes you can get their items via model shops, but I've never seen them listed at any price other than the price that Accurascale are advertising them at. This suggests to me that the model shops are basically selling them on an affiliate link kind of deal in which they just get a very small percentage for getting the trade, not that Accurascale really need them. If Bachmann were to do the same then their class 37 would retail at £163.30. Effectively both models are being sold by their manufacturers at about the same price, the difference is that Bachmann are giving the retailers an opportunity to make some revenue from theirs. The 'rip off' price you refer to is the retailers mark-up. I imagine if Bachmann were to adopt the Accurascale sales model we would actually see them retailing for £159.99, but no discounts or different prices anywhere.
No, I don't think that's quite right. Model shops wouldn't be interested in selling models on the basis of an "affiliate" link kind of deal - they have overheads to pay, and they couldn't afford it. Accurascale sell to retailers at a discount as usual, they just don't play around with artificially high RRPs that make products seem better value than they are when they get "discounted". Where do you get your information that retailers are making no money from Accurascale? If it's just a guess, I'd refrain from spreading such things, as it could be a considerable misrepresentation of the facts. Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Hi Sam I was very careful to put in 'This suggests to me' before I made my comment, although perhaps I was not so careful later on. To answer your comments. I wasn't suggesting that retailers are not making any money from Accurascale, just that they are only perhaps making a small percentage. I would imagine that Accurascale want to keep those modellers who don't use the internet happy and supply a certain amount through shops to those customers happy. As to whether shops would sell them for only small amounts, the answer I would suggest is a definite yes! If someone is offering to supply you with a box and you're guaranteed to make a 5 or 10 pounds from it then why wouldn't you? How much do you think they make on a pot of paint or a pack of imitation grass, a box is a box, retailers are not romantic... but with a high ticket item this also comes with the added bonus of producing that all important cash flow, and cash flow is king! Imagine if someone comes to you and and says they can guarantee to deliver you three boxes a month and they will supply them for £190 each and then you can sell them for £200 each. You will make £30 profit every month, but far more importantly because you would normally have 30 days to pay you would have an extra £570 of cash flow in your business every month, and while you could argue that you can't really use it the bank manager will be very impressed and he will feel more happy about lending you money or investing. As I say, I have no idea what Accurascales trading terms are and I'm sure they would not be happy to share them, but my personal guess would be something along those lines, but it is purely a guess. I don't spend a lot of time studying Accurascale prices but I have very rarely seen their items being sold at anything other than the same price that they sell them for, and I'm more than happy to be proved wrong. I think the only times I have seen reductions is with wagons that have perhaps sat around longer than would be expected. What would normally happen in these instances is that the manufacturer would issue a credit rebate against your next order on certain items, this is why you will suddenly see a single item being reduced by all the retailers at the same time. It's not the shops offering you the extra discount but the manufacturer. I'm just trying to give you an insight into my 30+ years of buying and selling in retail and how the system generally works, it is off course not always the same. I hope you find this interesting or at least something to ponder, I'm just trying to maybe put some context in. I certainly have no affiliation with either Bachmann or Accurascale and my thoughts are my own, and they are just that, thoughts and ideas based on experience.
No, I checked with a retailer to verify that the information I gave you was correct, and it is. Accurascale sell to retailers at trade price, the same as any other manufacturer does. Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Accurascale have a trade website and have previously published their trade terms. They do 30-33.33% for trade and generous terms too ( redir terms and free shipping) So basically they are just doing it way better or bachman are overcharging
@@jamesthatcher4190 Thanks James, very interesting. When this model was announced in 2019 with this RRP of £169.99 it was basically the same as Bachmann's 37. Since then we have had Covid and a world wide rise in the cost of shipping and energy that makes peoples eyes water, and business were not given the same level of protection via price capping as households. While some of those costs are starting to fall now they are still way more than they were in 2019. This has led to the large inflation in everything that we buy in the UK, although again some savings are now starting to drift through. Accurascale do not live in a bubble away from the rest of the world so they must be doing something to negate this. Perhaps a 90/10 split with internet/retail sales, so basically selling 10% of product at cost to retailers, you don't make a loss, but it hits your top line. I hope this doesn't sound like an argument, I'm just trying to figure out how they are doing it, the business side is probably more interesting to me than the locos! (lol).
I have exactly the same model DCC ready- it’s fabulous- also has stay alive so that the lights etc stay on for a few seconds after you switch off the power.
Another bonus feature that Accurascale have built into this model (and a few of their other diesels) is the option to buy replacement wheelsets in P4 or EM, and just switch out the OO wheels. While my collection of P4 locomotives is currently quite small, that number will get a significant boost thanks to handful of Accurascale locos I have or will have. It's a really cool feature I wish other manufacturers thought about as it really only requires a little bit more effort at the design stage, at least for Diesel and Electric locomotives, Steam ones would naturally be a lot more difficult.
Great review Sam. The 37 is stunning, undoubtedly my favourite model ever! I’m lucky enough to have a sound fitted version & it’s truly amazing. The so called “big manufacturers” must be quaking in their boots Accurascale are blowing them away with all of these new releases. Cheers John b😎
A bit late (I had to repost this as last time something went wrong),but I did thoroughly enjoyed the review and props to Accurascale for the excellent model!
Bachmann Class 37's after 6 months released are heavily reduced at the retailers because they are simply not shifting at those ludicrous prices, which just proves they are fleecing customers right from the beginning...if you really want a Bachmann for whatever reason then wait 6 months post release.
I have no doubt after your review that this is a fab loco. You showed off the beauty in the detail. And it is, for the price brilliant. However, I feel a sense of bias. You mentioned you found no negatives yet, the detail of the chain, the base keeper plate, the sand pipe, inability to service they’re all negatives, especially the poor quality mechanism of the bogey and the bar that touches. I wouldn’t say “no negatives”. So that was contradictory. Preached as a great. But I can’t help wonder how this would’ve been talked about if it had the hornby or Bachman logo with the “negatives” you did find above.
Agree that Bachmann doing a 37 was a waste of resources, when something new could be produced instead and the ‘old’ Bachmann 37 is still a fine model. Where the new Accurascale 37 really smashes the Bachmann one is in the sound department. The A/S one sounds like having a real 37 in the room :D
Re the driver and secondman figures, Accurascale said they're happy to add £10 to the RRP to include them for free :) Also there are retailers that discount the Bachmann 37 to around £160 to £180, so you'll be happy to hear that
Yeah... not worth £10 in my opinion - from the images I've seen, the colour 3D printed figures don't look that good. I feel confident that 2 injection moulded figures could be produced and painted for much less than than £10. And I'm glad the Bachmann have been discounted - but £160-£180 is still far too much, given how much better Accurascale's is... the lesser model needs to cost less if you ask me! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well done Accurascale. Waiting for my original 37s in green and Blue to arrive. Now we want the bigger brother the Class 40. There is something just not right with Bachmann's class 40.The windscreens for a start.
Hi Sam Yep great model. Got Loch Lomond a couple of weeks ago . My third one arrived today. Never thought much of diesels until this 37 came along. Retailers now discounting Bachmann 37's down to Accurascale dcc ready pricing or sometimes less which says it all. Get real Bachmann (and Hornby for that matter) or get stuffed endlessly by the likes of Accurascale.
Decent review here Sam, to be honest I couldn’t really care whether the accurascale thwarts bachmann, I own the bachmann one and it’s a really nice model, I also really like it and feel it does some things better, in my view there is room for both and currently bachmann has a much better variety in my view which is the reason why I went with the bachmann one, my one wasn’t that expensive, from kernow I got my bachmann one for £189.99.
Hi Sam. So great to see you give a score above 9.5 to any loco - an extremely rare event. Accurascale’s 37 is now the new yardstick for all manufacturers. My only problem with the loco to date is the two I ordered are both slated for delivery in the final production group of the first batch. Last update on 2nd June was for despatch in late August but it seems this timescale has slipped again. Meanwhile, I’m left to envy everyone who’s already received theirs.
Still no news on my pre-order placed in April 2022! Every time I enquire of Derails it’s delayed. Great review though and can’t wait (although I have to ☹️).
We use to pack rolled up newspaper into the side cab windows in winter to block drafts, When we where working double headed Welbeck colliery to Toton with 43 mgrs in the 70s.
Another banger from Accurascale! Looking forward to their Buckjumpers coming out next year! Also, I smell another comparison video coming on. Who will win?!
I LOVE the engine. I sense your enthusiasm for it. Even with the drawbacks of a camera and monitor, [all be it a very good digital one] and very good graphics card, I can still see that this engine exudes QUALITY!
Good review which confirms I did the right thing to purchase this Loch Lomond 37 with Factory Sound. I also have the Loch Eil 37027 with a white line underneath and Legomanbiffo sound installed. Also a BR Blue Deltic 9021 with Factory Sound. TMC has applied high gloss finish to both 37's and the Deltic. My traindoctor in New South Wales has attached snowploughs to both 37's. Having said that I had a lot of trouble especially with the chains of the Deltic that TMC has redesigned in a marvellous way ! Very delicate nifty parts that love to come off as well (like Guard irons and corner steps and a windhorn and lamphook from the Deltic and a windscreen pushed in on the Loch Lomond). Of course these three Accurascale loco's are (finally !!) a very nice trio but I think Bachmann is more robust and less prone to annoyances like I have mentioned. I still have a much older 37 from Bachmann with large logo and decent factory sound that still looks the part ! Cheers, Jan, Australia
The sound on the DCC ones is impressive - including the Hall sensors that detect curves and squeal - is it time for DCC, Sam?.. I know you have a sizeable fleet of analogue locos, but perhaps just one DCC circuit so you can enjoy the Accurascale sounds. I run the 55, 37 and 92 from Accurascale and the sound and other DCC features are best-in-class.
Bachmann's prices deserve roasting, they are ludicrous and obscene.....BUT, retailers are beginning to offer 35% off the newly tooled 37s and 47s which have been out for a year! This makes them cheaper than Accurascale's!
I'd like to add a comment. I bought a Class 37 direct from Accurascale a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, I had just had my knee replaced and was, how can I put it, not exactly thinking straight thanks to the morphine I was taking post-op. I should have left the loco alone when it arrived, but didn't have the sense to do and I damaged it almost as soon as I received it. I communicated with Accurascale, admitting what I had done and why, and was amazed to find that they told me the loco had "faulty parts" (it didn't, and I had told them that) and was being sorted out under warranty. This was a staggering goodwill gesture over damage that they could perfectly legitimately have charged me for. I have no connection with Accurascale except as a customer and I certainly can't guarantee they'll be as kind if you deliberately run your locos over with a steam roller. Purely because of this gesture (and the fact that the loco is fabulous), I have ordered another loco for early next year. By contrast, I bought a Class 08 from a.n.other manufacturer (curious it was a Class 08 because the manufacturer's name begins with the eighth letter of the alphabet) and the moveable roof vent promptly fell off and disappeared; the only response was "nothing we can do; we don't carry spares for that", which has had the exact opposite effect on me with regard to buying their products.
What in incredible loco! Wish I could afford one right now. I don't know what improvement the manufacturers have made with the motors, but I'm all here for it! I had my own look at the P2 on my channel and am still blown away by what I saw. Good review as always. Keep up the good work mate!
Yeah that's the thing - reasonable price but still a lot of money to find :( You're right - something seems to have changed across the board re motors... could be just a coincidence... but I like it! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have the same model sound fitted. Really pleased with it. I had the same issue with a sander pipe clicking on sleepers, and one of the roof magnets from the body stayed connected to the roof meaning the roof wouldn’t sit flush. It was a minor fix I had to glue a tiny magnet back in. I have 2 other Bachmann 37’s the tooling before the new one. Which I still really like but you can tell difference in appearance. Great review as always really enjoyed it 👍
Hi Sam. Bachmann over priced and over here. I watched your video the other day on Hornby's new P2 and was absolutely sold so I bought one yesterday at my local train shop Kernow model centre. Well I am very much sold on this Accurascale class 37 you have just tested what a wonderful model I will get one a bit later on though ,if there still around. great video again thank you.
Interesting review, Sam. I have Accurascale's Class 31 on order with them. Regarding problems caused by extra details, in my experience when I find that details interfere with performance or operation of the model, if they aren't necessary for the actual operation of the model, and especially if they aren't very visible, then off they go. If I can I try to remove them so that they can be attached again in the future.
Yes was hoping you’d review one of these fine machines. Will you be reviewing their class 31 when it’s released? Great videos and channel as always mate.
A very good model Sam. Going back in time, the 37 has been modelled by a lot of manufacturers. Hornby, VItrains, tri-ang, Bachman and others. Some great improvements on most occasions for their times. Yes kit builds are also a great way to improve your model. But accurascale have given us the best results so far. I think the price is about right. And for the looks and performance. Wow. Great review. I would buy one if I was modelling 00 . 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Another great review, Sam, thank you!! I was holding out for Accurascales 37010 due in the last batch and yet to be released. So impressed with their 37 in general, Ive (so far) ended up with 3 of them from the first batch! I was very tempted by Bachmanns rail blue 37 just released but after seeing your review, it makes no sense to buy it. I'll just wait until 37010 is released from Accurascale later this year.
It sounds like Acurascale is suffering from Rapidoitis, adding details to the point of hampering operation. The early offerings from Rapido were so detailed from the factory, but the details caused operating problems, and they got a lot of returns. Now they still have the details but the details that affect operations are included as add on parts. I think Acurascale will be doing the same thing in the future. Another great review, and another great model.
Accurascale are seriously impressive at the moment. My new manor has arrived and I can't wait to get it up in my loft for a running session. From the box it looks phenomenal.
The money saving is a game changer plus the fact, not mentioned by Sam,it's available in so many different versions you're lucky to get a small handful of bachmann choices, whereas the Accurascale choice is amazing,35+ versions I think from Accurascale
Thanks to a sale from rails of Sheffield. I was actually able to get the get the Bachman version of your model for 80p cheaper. The exterior detail is definitely more refined than bachmann’s but I love the engine room detail on Bachmann’s.
I know I'm late to the party but just ordered two of these beauties. Looking very promising but not without some faults as mention by you and other 'UA-camrs' All very fixable and tunable.
I must say as good as this sounds the terrible accessibility would be a dealbreaker for me. What's the use of all the great things about this model if you can't do maintenance that will be necessary sooner or later without removing some of the detailing permanently?
Another wonderful review. Thank you. I love the Class 37. As for your comment for the motor position, KATO made an HO GE P42 “Genesis” passenger diesel, that has motors with flywheels in the trucks (so it has actually two motors). I wish that more manufactures would include that feature. Of course I am sure the price would go up, but they run sooooo nice. I have one and will be looking for another one soon, to run my Amtrak Coast Starlight (Los Angeles to Seattle).
Holy wow, that's a HUGE rating for this model! So excited to pick one up - the only dilemma I have though is that I do already have a Bachmann 37, I want to say from the 2014 run - 37425 'Concrete Bob' - and I'm not sure how different the Accurascale model would look side by side with it? Would it fit alongside a Bachmann one just fine?
It sure is - and truly deserved too! It will indeed fit just fine - and I have some comparisons in this video if you're interested! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
How about longevity. I would like to bet the Bachmann 37 will keep running long after the Accurascale. The Accurascale Deltic was outstanding but not without it's problems. Bachmann are king when it comes to Diesels. In a word 'You get what You Pay For'. Even at the beginning of the review you had practically written off the Bachmann 37.
This is a pain to service, that's for sure - but I see no reason why it wouldn't last as long as Bachmann's - they're fundamentally the same in terms of build, both have bearings etc. Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Definatley need to try some accura scale models going off this one would love to see this with a dcc decoder and see how amazing it runs and the quality of the speakers and lights too
I wish the Accurascale had the Diecast bogies of the Bachmann. Other than that; Accurascale all the way. Great work Sam, thank you for another superb review.
I personally just suddenly realized that I also apparently found out from the info 'bout the locomotive in the train simulator app featured on my own tablet that a specifically wonderfully great total of precisely 309 of this official locomotive were built over a specifically wonderfully great 5-year-long-period from 1960-1965 respectfully!
In other words Bachmann makes a more maintenance friendly model and actually the grills on the sides of the front of the locomotive are more realistic, with that said you should have left all the switches in the on position. It's beautiful to see a model 37 in person
Guess I must have been unlucky but mine regularly derailed on set track point work. The sand pipes catch on the track and pinged off. The couplings fall out too. The weight of the model is impressive but the bogies in my opinion are light and not as robust as they should be. The sound is magnificent though and the decoration is exquisite.
Very nice. I have Accurascale's 37423 with the WIPAC lights, and it is a fantastic loco. I got bachmann 37430 on a very good deal from TMC, meaning it cost me less than the accurascale one, but having not run either on Ashbrooke Central because I moved 300 miles away, I can't really say which is better in regards to performance for me (but the previous generation bachmann 37 is much more cost effective than the new one). My only main gripe with the accurascale 37s is the delays. I was told at the start of the year that the first batch including 423 would be here in march, and the second batch including 37610 and 97301 would be due in may. Turns out the first batch was refurbished 37/4s, 2nd was scottish 37/0s, 3rd was large logo locos, and 4th is the /6s and the 97/3 which is due to leave the factory very soon. But, I've learned to expect all locomotive preorders at least 50% later than originally slated. Every loco I have preordered has been late: KR Models GT3 and The Fell (plus the Leader and DHP1 still on their way), Bachmann G5s, Accurascale 55s and 92s and 37s, hornby trainbow 800 (although I only expressed my interest with my local shop, it arrived 2 years late with all the price rises that go with that so I didn't go for it straight away), Heljan 18000 and 10800 (which is still on its way), and more.
Amazing value from Accura (I hope I have spelt it correctly) for a much bigger locomotive than Bachmann's tank engines. That is definitely the best review you have done Sam.I would buy an Accura class 37 but as far as I can remember the only I saw were those at Plymouth Laura ànd I am a SR enthusiast who was on a SR runabout ticket. I hope that Accura will produce some SR based steam engines as even in Crawley and Three Bridges we still have steam traction to watch and enjoy.
If you check info out even Scottish 37s scottie dog era were seen on St Blazey shed at Par, They ranged far and wide so you could buy one, Like most locos even the cl52s were sometimes seen at Leeds.
It’s a shame they only have a single full BR Blue livery, which is sold out! There are so many variants of these, I’ll wait until more BR Blue locos become available rather than buying a Bachmann one. Great review Sam, thank you
Great video, I picked up 37419 a few months ago and love it. I had an issue with the sanding pipes, they got caught on my points and I did derail :( But after cutting them down its works a treat. Under Hornby DCC you don't get the cab, instrument, engine room lights or the spot light. I believe after talking to a local model shop they had issues with these on a non Esu chip. This lets it down slightly, however on the plus side, the stay alive feature is brilliant. It copes well with my Ebay special tracks (I'm just starting out so I didn't want to spend a lot) It makes me want to get another one, but I'm, torn between this one, 37402 or 09, or 37608
5:24 I'm more interested in the trailing locomotive in that photo. It looks like a class 25 without a yellow front, which the picture caption calls "Ethel 2". It's actually an electric train-heating car rebuilt from a recently retired locomotive. I'd love to see Accurascale make those. I am surprised the switches inside deal don't align with the lighting functions. If it's for DCC functionality, why have six switches and not three?
Hello Sam, something that might interest you and others. I have just received the same loco (Loco Lomond) and had a problem with the loco slowing down then speeding up, I had the same problem with the class 92. I had read the "YOU MUST READ THIS" notice but on taking loco out of box the front windscreen was out and lying in the cab, great. Being a bit annoyed I completely forgot about what I had read and started to see how the loco would run, on the track straight away it started slowing down and speeding up, oh no not again I thought. Fortunately that evening I watched your video where you were on about the six switches and does it really matter about how they are set, and will it self destruct the loco and Sam. So I remembered not checking the switches so did and found they were NOT set to run on DC analogue, which is the system I use. I reset the switches as recommended for DC analogue and up to now the loco is definitely running a lot better, it still has a slight tendency to varying speed but very slight and something I can live with, I also repaired the windscreen. Hope this will help others about the importance of reading the warning label AND checking the settings on your loco for the system you use, Bill.
You'll have to see how the Accurascale model stacks up after a period of time. I should chalk this one up as due for a long-term test in 5 years' time, and see if it is still going. With all that weight, to drag around, I'd wonder how long it will be until the motor burns out!
The concept of the disruptor in business, That's Acurascale, Rapido and also Dapol (I love Dapol, always have since the Dr Who days and plastic bag kits). Hornby and Bachmann have had a profitable little duopoly going one for quite some time in a rich market. They hardly ever stepped on each other's toes. For example, we don't see a Bachmann Flying Scotsman, and we won't see a new tool Hornby Pannier or Jinty. Why bother? The other has it covered. One reason why Hornby has bet the farm on TT, there isn't any competition (tooling and ecosystem costs a fortune) - also, I don't get TT, there's N which is getting better and betterer. Neither will go to O because, well Dapol is there, and it's super niche and end-to end layouts are enthusiast territory. Bachmann is maybe doing OK in 009? there stuff is super nice, but super expensive - $400 AUD for a 009 040? No chance. I can almost buy an anycubic resin printer for that and a Thomas N gauge mech on ebay for next to nothing. And again 009 is enthusiast territory. The price and quality is similar between the two, there is no point in releasing a model when competition exists. Not any more. LIDAR, CAD, cheap high quality manufacturing, and the growth in high quality DIY 3D printing means that the old players are hitting really steep competition for the first time. It's awesome. That's the reason why Bachmann and Honby rush expensive models out knowing that the competition is releasing the same. It's their profitability window, and it's closes fast -they only have a limited time. Hornby cashed in on Lion (such a stunning lack of imagination. Hello! Locomotion? Planet? Invicta? Stromboli? You have Rocket - add to the collection you twits), and stacked the offering into a pack to maximise profit while Rapido was still just an announcement - same with Bachmann's new tool 37. Hornby have all the hallmarks of a company owned by venture capital. Good riddance I say. Compete or die f*ckers - it's your's to lose. Also, I've had four wines.
I dont know where you get the idea that Hornby is making huge profits. They have been losing money for almost 10 years. Their current share price is 19p compared to stg 1.50 in 2011. They also have substantial debt. I dont know how Bachman is going because there are no published financials although it was reported some years ago that they were suffering heavy losses. So if the two major producers are not making money the obvious question is how can Acurascale if they selling a more detailed and presumably more costly to produce product. The model train market is showing all the classic signs of a product in the decline stage of the product life cycle exhibited by ever increasing product complexity as each player tries to hold share in a declining market.
With so many born-again modellers coming back to the hobby with time, space and (some) resources, if I were Hornby, the brand they’ll remember, I would go down market to the sub £100 loco level (Railroad) and produce less detailed but good running models. At that price point, younger modellers would also be encouraged in as it’s not too far off birthday and Christmas present prices, whereas £200+ for a loco is (probably) an overstretch….and would you want to put a loco of that value and intricate detail in the hands of an 8 year old? (No disrespect to 8 year olds 😀)…..I was one once, but my locos were die cast Hornby three-rail, practically indestructible!
Greg, I think it's because Hornby are too big to sustain themselves - they have a massive premises and an enormous team. Their models aren't much better than others, yet they're extremely expensive, presumably to try and maintain such a huge company. Accurascale are very different - they operate on a 'work-from-home' basis, and they have a comparatively much smaller team. They also focus on model railway products, and doing them well... rather than trying to serve multiple different hobbies and spreading themselves too thinly. The fact that Accurascale can produce models as good as this at prices as good as this, shows that their business structure can work. Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Hornby own Airfix, and new Airfix is just brilliant. Their tooling, presentation and instructions are up there with the best, and sure, their prices have risen but you get an excellent kit for your money. Airfix have also had the decency to release their ancient kits labelling and pricing them accordingly. Revel release ancient kits and price them as if they are new. So at least one arm of Hornby respects their customers.
Excellent review Sam - great loco by Acc/scale again detailed and well worth the asking price - put others to shame H/By, Bch/man but bit of design oversight with the rubbing detail parts (pipes) against boggie and the coupling mechanism; apart from that perfect model - got one on order as a Xmas / Birthday present.
The Bachmann 47s sound fitted are superb. Nobody pays full rrp for anything including locos, Bachmann 37s can be cheaper all round they are good all rounders.
Shop around some of the new tool Bachmann 37 are the same price £169.95. I've never seen an Accurascale loco discounted apart from the class 92 although some of their rolling stock is.
Lol bachmann's days are over. I love how unbiased you are as a modeler. I just got into the hobby 8mons ago and you are the reason I research so much and stay true to me and my layout. Thank you for your content Sam.
Accurascale kinda came out of nowhere and took the model railroad world by storm. Quality products at quality prices! Good on them!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us,

Thank you so much for your kind words Doctor, that's very much appreciated! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A feature I was blown away by on the sound version was the Flange Squeal that only activates when it hits a corner! Amazing attention to detail!
22:49 22:48 - bewildered by how you struggled so much with the keeper plate removal.
And the price, what Ricmann don't seem to care, just over priced.
I'm looking forward to the class 31. I have 5 on order.
@@roberthill6216 seriously, there is another diesel locomotive from Accurascale coming out soon.
I’m puzzled that Sam wasn’t bothered about a sanding pipe falling off! Bits falling off sounds like a deal breaker.
The sand pipes are made to scale and having asked accurascale they are designed to be trimmed if you have right radius on your layout.
But it is an extra/improved detail over those already available. It is like comparing a loco with a buffer falling off against an older one which incorrectly never had them at all.
If that had happened on a Hornby loco we wouldn’t hear the end of it.
Hornby don't add them to their models at all :)
@@TheGameCamer360
@@mccarronfamily missed the point completely
I've got one of these too, and I'm very happy with mine. I wanted a 37 for years, but for whatever reason, I never bothered with the existing Bachmann models.
For reference, my model is 37027 'Loch Eil' in BR blue with the additional white stripe.
I think it goes to show how much Hornby and bachman along with other companies really are ripping people off
Neither are cheap models
But accurascale knocks everyone out of the park
Brilliant details and a brilliant runner and you get a feeling of a really great value for money
Absolutely fantastic. Accurascale are doing the business right now, can’t wait for my buckjumper next year
The accurascale chains are friction fit. They will pop out with some firm pressure using a small grip or good tweezer. The sand pipes are designed to scale and intended to be cut if your curves are tight. Scoring it low isn’t a real reflection of the fact it’s a much superior mechanism to any of my other stock
I did try with tweezers... the parts broke before snapping apart - if they were designed to be snap fit, that didn't work on my example,
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What a magnificent locomotive. AccuraScale truly is changing the game when it comes to the value for money department. Now they just need to start making steam locomotives. Great video Sam
They do, the GWR 7800 Manor has just been released to customers and they have the J67, J68 and J69's coming later.
@@sapphirejunction8993 Oh you’re right. Just looked them up. Still I do hope to see them do some larger steam locomotives (such as a 9F) in the future
@@railfanjackson4531 A 9F is also top of my list for Accurascale, closely followed by a Large Prairie.
Re the driver and secondman figures, Accurascale said they're happy to add £10 to the RRP to include them for free :)
Also there are retailers that discount the Bachmann 37 to around £160 to £180, so you'll be happy to hear that
Yeah... not worth £10 in my opinion - from the images I've seen, the colour 3D printed figures don't look that good.
Maybe buy a pack and see how realistic they look in person ? A painted figure will never look as accurate

Well done Accurascale. Waiting for my original 37s in green and Blue to arrive. Now we want the bigger brother the Class 40. There is something just not right with Bachmann's class 40.The windscreens for a start.
Hi Sam
Yep great model.
Thats the standard by which all others must reach now Sam.Amazing model. Nice to see it get a 9.52. Nice one.
We use to pack rolled up newspaper into the side cab windows in winter to block drafts, When we where working double headed Welbeck colliery to Toton with 43 mgrs in the 70s.
I’ve been waiting for this! It was getting to the point where I was getting worried you weren’t going to review it, but here it is! Huzzah!
Another banger from Accurascale! Looking forward to their Buckjumpers coming out next year!
Also, I smell another comparison video coming on. Who will win?!
No idea why Accurascale lie and say their locos have metal gears in the bogie when they're clearly plastic!
Probably because MaRkEtInG.
Some have metal like mine!
Another classic adventure of Sam roasting Bachman's prices
Bachmann's prices deserve roasting, they are ludicrous and obscene.....BUT, retailers are beginning to offer 35% off the newly tooled 37s and 47s which have been out for a year! This makes them cheaper than Accurascale's!
12:49 I like how there's a little white dog on the side of the diesel engine
Good review Sam, hope you do a review on the Accurascale Maner, I have just receive mine and The wait was worth it. Keep up the good work.
Yeah that's the thing - reasonable price but still a lot of money to find :(
You're right - something seems to have changed across the board re motors... could be just a coincidence... but I like it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review as always really enjoyed it 👍
Accurascale FTW! Im waiting to get my Class 89 model when it releases.
😮I've seen other reviews for the accrascale 37 and it's very much the same conclusion. The accurascale model comes out tops above the Bachmann one.
Thanks Sam l have been waiting for your review and am going to buy one over the bachmann , regards Dave
Thanks to a sale from rails of Sheffield. I was actually able to get the get the Bachman version of your model for 80p cheaper. The exterior detail is definitely more refined than bachmann’s but I love the engine room detail on Bachmann’s.
Mine arrived today - can’t wait for the weekend to run it on the railway. Thanks for the review 🚂👍
Goodie! Hope to see the AS Manor next!
I know I'm late to the party but just ordered two of these beauties. Looking very promising but not without some faults as mention by you and other 'UA-camrs' All very fixable and tunable.
You and Geoff Marshall just uploaded at the same time!
I must say as good as this sounds the terrible accessibility would be a dealbreaker for me. What's the use of all the great things about this model if you can't do maintenance that will be necessary sooner or later without removing some of the detailing permanently?
Sam , I have been waiting for this for ages , I'm in love with your channel and please keep up the good work , cannot wait for the manor version
Makes me really want one, definitely solidifies my decision to get an accurascale 37 when I go to get a 37.
I got a Hornby Flying Scotsman last week as a birthday present to me, I'm planning on running it in a running session on my birthday
Awesome video Sam's trains
Thanks Sam, what a stunner! When will the more well-known manufacturers get the hint and drop their prices AND up their quality??
Bachmann are pretty close, Hornby on a different planet!
Exactly this !
This is a pain to service, that's for sure - but I see no reason why it wouldn't last as long as Bachmann's - they're fundamentally the same in terms of build, both have bearings etc.
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The sound fitted Bachmann 47s are absolutely fabulous.
After a long time, am very happy that your rating matches what i expected. The rating is 100% correct.
Hi Sam another great review. Just one question how do you decide what model you buy to review.
Fully agree on this, plus some odd loco wobble in curves and pointwork. Have only tried two model yet though...
There was a thing called covid too.
Very honest and detailed review.
I love this class diesel! It's one of my most favourite diesel classes🚄
Well done accurascale. Great review sam .
Accurascale look to have got the shade of blue more accurate as well. BR Blue has a bit of yellow in it.
It copes well with my Ebay special tracks (I'm just starting out so I didn't want to spend a lot) It makes me want to get another one, but I'm, torn between this one, 37402 or 09, or 37608
Another home run from accurascale, hopefully they don’t get too high in the clouds and begin making their models like Bachman lol
Reading the instructions is certainly always my first step
You'll have to see how the Accurascale model stacks up after a period of time. I should chalk this one up as due for a long-term test in 5 years' time, and see if it is still going. With all that weight, to drag around, I'd wonder how long it will be until the motor burns out!
Yeah that’s true! I will be interested to see how well they last! They certainly won’t get much servicing!
Why not, motor access is super easy?@@SamsTrains
@@gregscally5119 I wrote that Hornby boxed Lion to maximise profit, not that Hornby were making huge profits.
I can't see why you would need to remove the chains to remove the base keeper plate? That comes off without the chains coming off.
It does.
We had a Class 37 running on the Rhymney line becuase TFW messed up by withdrawing the class143 and didnt have enough trians to replace them with
Have you gotten one of those new manors? Curious to see what these guys are capable off with a ‘large’ tender engine
I'm still waiting but I'm dying to see what they're like :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The odd one out is the class 52, Western because it is a diesel hydraulic locomotive, whereas the others are diesel electric 😊
Shop around some of the new tool Bachmann 37 are the same price £169.95. I've never seen an Accurascale loco discounted apart from the class 92 although some of their rolling stock is.
Perhaps you need to re make this video now after the accurascake 37 big issues .
Lol bachmann's days are over. I love how unbiased you are as a modeler. I just got into the hobby 8mons ago and you are the reason I research so much and stay true to me and my layout. Thank you for your content Sam.
Have you thought about comparing all the class 37 models from lima, vi trains, old bachmann, new bachmann and accurascale?
Hi Sam love your videos and your energy
