I had such a good dad energy moment yesterday. I went to grab a bite and a very sketchy person came into the restaurant. I saw a family and went over to ask if I could stand with them while I waited for my food. The dad went very dad mode and invited me to sit with them, on the side of the table against the wall where I couldn't be approached from behind, and even went and grabbed my food from the counter when it was ready so I wouldn't have to pass near the very sketchy person.

My dad would have been awful at this. He absolutely loved a boyfriend I had that was a big muscle-head jock life-of-the-party type, who was very good at flattering my dad but he annoyed the crap out of my mother - she could tell he was fake. He wasn’t terribly smart and was emotionally abusive to me. My mother hated him. We broke up after two years together and dad grieved while mom rejoiced. My next boyfriend was a 180-degree departure: extremely intelligent, dry wit, all-American handsome, kind, sweet, thoughtful, would do anything for me. Mom loved him to bits…I ended up marrying him. 32 years later, we’re still going strong.

I feel like this does a better job highlighting that Mom's do so much of the invisible parenting that Dad's overlook. We know teachers and schools because of the forms, events and conferences. We know DOB because of all the medical appointments etc.
There are terrible Dad's out there, my son's Dad couldn't tell you literally anything about his son because he isn't present. He forgot he was lactose intolerant and fed him a happy meal with milk the one time he actually showed for a visitation. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Although it's edited to sell the joke, even the fathers (like those shown) who seem to be quite clueless can still be great fathers. My father used to quite easily forget the grade I was in too, even though he's pretty involved in my school life and events. He's an amazing dad and has always been, we're super close. I also tend to forget my little sister's grade or the names of her friends, but we still spend pretty much every day together and have a great relationship. Funny enough, the closest of my friends have always been the ones I know the least basic stuff about even though I consider them the ones I know best. Funny how that works for some people.

I feel like questions like those r more so a burden on the spousal relationship than it is specifically hard on the child.
For the child as long as u have a fun caring parent that shows up ur not going to notice the small details that get left out.
For the spouse having to carry the weight of all that information, and worry abt whether or not ur spouse would be able to properly take care of the kids without u would be difficult.
So, when I see things where dads r missing information abt their kids I'm not specifically thinking abt the relationship the child and parent has, but the effect that has on the spouse.
Most of those questions r important for medical and education purposes, which would fall on the parents not the child.

This reminds me of a Ted talk I watched by Marilyn York
      I highly recommend it
In her talk she discusses that Mums often do much better than dads at the practical questions about their kids - who's their doctor, what school do they go to, what prescription are their glasses… and dads typically do much better than Mums at the fun questions - who's their favourite superhero, what's makes your kid feel defeated/proud?
She also goes on to talk about the importance of those differences and the role that two parents play (in this case male and female) in the development of kids

To the first segment, I saw a TedX talk from Marilyn York (she's an attourney for divorced men), and yes trivia questions like these often stump fathers, but guess what kind of questions often stump mothers? Personal ones. And fathers excel at those. Things like "if your son was a super hero, what would his power be? How high is your daughter comfortable flying on the swing? What monsters are your kids afraid of? What makes your son feel defeated? What does your daughter want to be when she grows up?" I feel that is just as important or perhaps more important than knowing all of the trivia facts about your children.

@@melodyclark1944 When Marilyn York brought these up, her point was being in tune with the things that matter to their kids. Feel free to disagree, but she wasn't talking about being "the fun parent". She was talking about having a connection with your children. I'm probably not doing a good job explaining though. • @pinkmuffin9842

Seriously though, the expectations what a mother should do and know and what a father should do and know are vastly different in society. So much so that when a dad is pushing a stroller he's World's best dad, whereas mum is just mum, right? It puts a lot of pressure on the mothers and I wish that would change. Obviously not saying that there aren't truly committed dad's out there, but if mums do the exact same thing, it's just considered normal.

I think fathers should still do better, because for every Date or info they don't remember, their partner has to. Forgot birthday? Mum will remember to buy Gifts. Kid is sick? Gotta call mum, she knows the doctor they usually go to. It shouldn't be left to one partner to remember These things.

I miss my dad. Haven't spoken to him in 6 years except for one very awkward birthday call that my half sister prompted. I call him each year and leave him a voice mail on his birthday. He never answers. I'm not even sure I'm calling the right number anymore.
I'd love to just go out and have a drink with him at this point. Tell him what's been going on.
I don't think he'd know the answer to any if the questions that street interviewer asked.

If I had daughter it would be easier choose for her than choosing for me. I can't use these aps because with my low selfesteen I'd feel ungrateful to reject someone willing to waste their time with me :-D

Moms answered those questions no problem! Also haha seems like you are the 35 and above choice not the 30 and under choice.

To be fair conversations with mom were always very different than conversations with dad.
Mom was more about internal stuff and dad was more about understanding the external.

My dad might have got my birthday and he would only have known my doctor because we had the same doctor. He would have failed everything else, especially a date for me. He couldn't even tell you my LP's last name after over a decade.

okay so bad parent story from my dad: My Birthday is the day after my brother's and on the morning of my birthday when we had a big celebration for my brother's birthday the day before my dad was jelling at me to clean up the house because my uncle was visiting that day ..... He also forgot to pick me up from school on his was home from work several times (I literally stood on the side of the road and he was driving past me) and that's just the biggest things he's done (besides the emotional and verbal abuse). Also I wouldn't judge a parent for forgetting some of these things once in a while because everyone has a bad day now and again but some parents just make it so obvious they don't care
About the dating thing: I don't have children but I have thought about these things and honestly I wouldn't care about what faith they have or where they're from or any of this because that doesn't really matter. The only thing I would care about when meeting the partner of my child would be: Are they treating them right? Are they a good person? And are both happy? Only if one of these things would be questionable would I have a talk to my child and have an open talk to them about what I'm seeing. And hopefully I'll have raised them in a way so they can listen to my concerns and thoughtfully consider them

When she said she'd give her Dad's pick a try, she had a one-sided shrug and kind of shook her head 'no.' I'm sure she meant it, but she wasn't getting a vibe.
