Jihoon's mom excusing his lying and recklessness because of "youth," is undoubtedly one of the reasons why he's not self-sufficient at 30.
Her excuses for her baby boy is the same relationship style my mother-in-law has with my husband and his brother. She babied them yet made her daughter super strong.

When he and I have arguments and I have gone to his mother.
She tells me that our problems are small and simple and that the only real problems in a relationship (and the only valid grounds for a divorce) are drinking, cheating, and domestic voilence.
Since he doesn't do those I have no reason to cry and should just become tougher and I have no reason to leave.
Yeah..... and my brother in law is 34 and takes care of the in-laws, working as little as he can, and shuts himself in his room all day with his 4k TV and video games. He won't even go to a store other than WalMart (his workplace) to get things he needs. He has no friends and has never had any relationship in his life.

Asiah Eibhlin it’s so weird they baby their sons and treat their daughters like second class citizens. Even though I find my mother doesn’t baby my brother my grandmother does. She has paid his rent, let him borrow her car etc.. But when I ask for anything it’s like no I can’t do that. That’s why I don’t even try to have a relationship because she doesn’t treat me the same.

Imagine an American bachelor. Late 20s. Still living with a relative or roommates or their parents because they were not financially prepared and then the gf buys a month's rent to an apartment and blames him for not having a job, when he only needed to support himself a year ago, and now he is expected to support 3 mouths (and she expects a diamond ring). This is stressful for anyone and they both make bad decisions

he said "I have a part time job so I can rest whenever I want." this is not "trying his best". he could have a full time job or 2 part time jobs. he has a baby to take care of and is saying he is capable of taking care of Devyn and her daughter as well. his best would be sacrificing for his family which means working hard, sending child support, and telling Devyn to stay in the US until he can actually provide not just telling her to come whenever he's lonely or misses his kid.
I can't see that he is too weak. He cries like a baby. No man that cries can support a family.
Behind a great man there is a great woman, nothing happens overnight it's a process. She nags too much, poor guy.

Now I fully understand why Jihoon is immature and irresponsible. It's all because his mom is enabling him and making up excuses for him to not feel guilty. His mom, herself, doesn't even understand why Deavan is leaving so soon and she's a grown woman. Of all people, she should know and understand better.

I feel like Jihoon has anxiety. It's like he wants to do all these things but the thought of following through is so daunting and overwhelming, so you lie and pretend to be okay instead.
It probably comes from the codependency with his mom. Probably every idea he had, she twisted in some way where he now doubts himself.

You're making excuses for him and yourself. What is considered working hard and giving it your all? When one route from trying hard doesn't work try another. It's call keep trying until you make it even when it feels like you're not. That's not a lot of expectation. That's call being a grown ass person who's responsible ESPECIALLY having children and a wife. Seeing how your comment mentioned high expectation, your expectations are low for me honestly. To me this isn't high expectation at all. It's call being a grown up with responsibilities. High expectations is like going from a straight F student to a straight A student in a quarter. High expectations are like living on one's own, managing classes, managing bills, managing tuition fees, and managing survival for long term not short term.

They have a combination of: dropping out of school, working part time dead-end jobs, being unemployed, using drugs, crime activities, debt, spending their time playing videogames or hanging out with friends, not having qualifications for a job, depending financially on their parents...It's a crisis, I don't know why.
Parents should raise their kids to be independent, but they're failing.

Why is everyone calling him irresponsible? His food delivery job did pay $3000/month on good months (he told deavan his job paid $3000-4000 a month), he didn't wanna waste his money so he sent it to his mom to stop him from impulse-spending it, and he paid off his debt. He was making a legitimate effort to change/save up and wanted to see his child. If Deavan leaves him (and moves to the US), I feel so sorry for him because it's very unlikely he'll see his child grow up.

@Shenoski Travoski He does have a full time job. It's an error with the translation. Part time job (아르바이드) in Korean does not necessarily mean that it is 0-20 hours a week like in English. It means that the job does not have a secure contract with pension and healthcare. So Jihoon could be working his ass off to provide for his family, but probably TLC frames him as a lazy guy to create drama

The thing is, he said on good months he makes $3000 doing delivery, which is not that bad, and still in the income range he originally told her. She's taking away his child (if she is leaving) when she could easily work in Korea too, especially as an English teacher.
And honestly, if he sent the money he earned to his mom so he wouldn't spend it, that doesn't mean he's irresponsible, if anything he's trying to fix himself. Poor man.

S. C. The thing is I don’t think Deavan is qualified to be a school teacher. They won’t just hire because she speaks English. Also the cost of living in Korea is different from the US so $3000 or less may not even be enough for a family of 4. Especially if you take into account food, rent, diapers, schooling etc.
I do feel bad if she takes away his child because that’s just messed up. I believe he applied for a visa here but may have been declined but I wonder how it will turn out in the end
She only need a tefl certification to be a English teacher and you can get it in 2 weeks online, but is extremely easy for natives from Anglo speakers counties become an teacher in Asia
Deathx Tv I doubt that. She speaks no Korean so how would she teach Koreans English? She would have to understand their language to teach them. Think about it. My spanish teacher also speaks english. When you teach someone a language you have to understand not only your language but theirs as well. You have to be bilingual. Make it make sense.

Most korean parents won't approve of Deavan as daughter-in-law and scold their sons for not having a proper job. Jihoon's parents are the rare ones.
I know he hasn’t been perfect in the sense of money, but the fact that he can own up to his mistakes and actually cry about the realization that he might loose her shows how much he cares.
On the plus side atleast he realizes his flaws about his situation.

But she cant just let a man in her childs life and let them get to know each other then take him away. Dricsillia is old enough to have attachment problems because of that and like Jihoon i would be fearful of having my kids taken away too. Jihoon should seriously step up and provide for his family and Deavan should stop threatening him and forcing him to step up. As a mom you should build your child's confidence and keep them accountable not enable their toxic behavior. Otherwise he wouldn't be crying about how ashamed he is.
When you have someone coming to you in distress expressing their emotions and concerns, you never disprove them at the moment. No matter how stupid that person sounds, you first agree with them, give them comfort and even advocate for them even though you don't agree. You do that especially when that person is your child. His mom knew he messed up but she did the right thing by taking his side. She ain't stupid. She knew her son is to be blamed here but she kept it to herself. She was being wise there. Allowing someone to first express their feeling and empathizing with them is the key to counseling people. Do not forget that.
Debt is a huge problem in Korea and household debt is only rising. Jihoon - there are other people going through the same thing you are. Don't feel embarrassed, it'll only make you want to hide it more and more and ignore the problem. Accept it, be open, tell others. They'll hold you accountable and it'll motivate you to do better. I think he's just starting to realize the situation he's in and it's hitting him hard. I believe in him. Unlike others on this show, Jihoon isn't delusional, he totally has room for redemption

Deavan is 100% correct for being pissed off. He seriously hasn’t got anything prepared. He had plenty of time from when he got her pregnant to get things in order but he did nothing. No sympathy whatsoever for him.
