Your mention of "saving your fingers" points out the fact that the techniques in every single "how to cut an avocado" video on UA-cam are ridiculously dangerous, showing people slicing toward their own hands on the lengthwise equtor.
NEVER cut toward your own body parts. Always cut downward toward a cutting board, with your other hand OVER the back of the knife to steady it. And these videos encouraging people to remove the pit by whacking into it with the knife are grossly irresponsible.
