Yep, and ESEE themselves do not trust their s35vn knives, they feel it is inferior to their 1095 knives. It is, because s35vn is pocket knife steel, not survival knife steel. It breaks before it bends.

The only reason ESEE uses S35VN is market demand from people who don’t understand their knives and think they need some sort of “premium” steel. 1095 is the premium steel on a survival knife, not s35vn.

I am going to get one being a Beckerhead myself. Thanks for showing and reviewing. Obviously, the knife was not created to be a shooting target. It passed all the other tests quite well. First and foremost is the total integrity of the knife and could you depend on it with your life. Based on what I have seen, the answer is yes. The knife is a real beast, not a fake one ! A friend always !
I've seen AR 500 armor plate that can't stand up to extended rifle shots. One of the major tests for a pressure vessel like a pressurized tank is an impact test at low temperature. There are many steels that can't handle low temp impact tests. Knives are not really designed to be heavily impacted an a regular basis.....

I build primitive bows and I prefer the BK9 for it’s length and weight. I do keep a fresh BK2 in my day pack. By far, THE best sub 7” blade out their for the price point.

As a survival knife, I will stick with my 1095 and 80crV2 carbon steels because of toughness and ease of sharpening. Cpm and super steels are designed for specific uses not general use. I've been a machinist for 31 years and machined lots of cpm 3,9,10V, T420,T440, D2, Elmax and different grades of stainless. A lot of knife manufacturers make knives out of so called super steels for a sales gimmick but, don't have much experience in heat treating them steels. Great content as always...👍
As a long time vet, I can tell people that my issued Kabar knives and seal pup knives all survived pretty much everything I could throw at them. To include a couple of times actually being used as a pry bar! The 1095 and AUS8 were also very easy to resharpen in the field. These new steels are awesome, and it's up to you to decide what you intend to do with your knife. If my properly heat treated 1095 steel and AUS8 steel knives could handle military use, all these other knives should be able too also. The key point for all steels is the heat treatment. Otherwise, your improperly heat treated sv35n or 3V will be worth less than you paid for it and will probably not perform as well as a lesser steel with good heat treatment!

Too bad the sheath is not a symmetrical sandwich sheath with belt loop. Apart from that, it is nice that they finally mount a micarta handle scales directly. Great, keep it up!
Hi guys, I am not sure, if S35V is worth an upgrade for a knife which is mainly used for chopping or buttoning. Why do you put that much focus on edge retention for a chopper? A chopper must be at first place very tough and should not chip and for this purpose the 1095 steel is absolutely the right choice for that kind of knife. The S35V is a nice marketing for selling more knives 😊

A BK2 in Magnacut would be pretty awesom. Or for even more toughness (but less edge retention and less stain resistant) S3V or if stainless and toughness are desired at the expense of edge holding (compared to Magnacut) maybe AEB-L.
I bought a bk 2 on this channel’s recommendation and was not disappointed. Mine has processed so much wood the coating is completely gone.. Now I’m torn wether to get this or keep saving for the DBK knoife!

Well i am happy with my old BK2. I have no problem with some, occasional, maintainance. I like to tinker with my favorite toys. Keep that brittle "super steel".
I have a BK7 and a BK9 and they are awesome. Admittedly the BK7 is my favorite because the 9 is really too big to carry around on your belt and the 7 is pretty much perfect. If they made an S35V BK7.... actually, please don't because I can't afford it. Oh and sheath thing boggles the mind. They should have at least included a Tek-lok or something.
Well for the sheath: one guy wants a TekLok, then then next one wants a MOLLE lok, and the third one will chuck it in a backpack and wont worry about a clip. So I get it they leave it to the user to choose.
The break... Yeah thats fatique/dynamic loads. This is the age old bend the paperclip story. It happens to any form of use and the higher the load the faster the crack. You can chop or baton, same shit happens. It builds up until its final moment and then *crack*
Well since big ass knives are somewhat used for a bit of hard use and sometimes chopping but not to the extent of axes. There is a reason why choppers like axes have a lower level of HRC than knives. Some averages to as low as 50 hrc. So Im not surprised that even with a super steel and a stainless no less got chipped. The average hrc for a super steel is gonna be on the level at the least of 58-59 HRC. Its still a great knife if used properly and not used as a throwing knife or chopping near lots of rubble. Love you guys.
Would you guys consider doing a "revisited" episode on the mora garberg? For years it was the standard, you guys made multiple vids on it 5-6 years ago, basically the perfect cheap bushcrafter, but how does it score these days when you've had access to top tier steel knives? Should mora garberg owners be happy to stay with what they've got?
I love the channel enjoyed the video and do respect you guys for coming around on the shooting test not being an indicator of quality because it really isn't it's more of a brittleness test for the steel, unless you're out there trying to deflect bullets with your knife like in anime it's a very outlandish scenario.
Would love to see you compare an original bk-2 knife before they were make by Becker. The mark 1 model that’s thinner and doesn’t have the weight reduction in the handle.
Can you test the CAC S200 French military knife? It also uses the axis lock and has Nitrox steel. Would like to see how it performs, maybe compare to Benchmade?
Make a non coated BK- 2 in Magnacut with a saber grind and a 90 degree spine. The ultimate in toughness, edge holding, rust resistance, ect. That would be a bad ass knife right there. S35vn is nice for cutting, but 1095 kicks its ass in toughness, but Magnacut is tougher then A1, so that would be a beast!
Consider a knife to be like a member of a man's anatomy. When it is soft, it doesn't break, when it is hard it can break into a thousand pieces. This was told to me by a former WW2 German soldier that I studied my trade under in the 70's.

You know what they say; “Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight” 😉😜 But it still looks like a great knife. I like the s35v steel a lot. Keeps a good edge. I just purchased the cold steel AD10 with the same steel. Marvellous. Now I would like to experience the great DBK-knife 😉
For the kind of resistance to abuse that was needed there the knife in general needs to be softer, made from a steel that is more suited to take abuse. I would probably consider 3V the most suitable. S35VN is a great steel still, but more suited to knives that won't see this kind of abuse. ESEE's S35VN knives are probably in the same league?

I prefer aebl or 14c28n to simple carbon steels. It's tougher, holds an edge better, and is stainless.

S35VN is a good steel for a folder but for a big knife you're better off with 3v or Magnacut. I'd love to see some 3v Beckers.

This knife looks quite the same as the Lionsteel T6 ?

For the kind of resistance to abuse that was needed there the knife in general needs to be softer, made from a steel that is more suited to take abuse. I would probably consider 3V the most suitable. S35VN is a great steel still, but more suited to knives that won't see this kind of abuse.
ESEE's S35VN knives are probably in the same league?
