Regardless of the director, I have no problem with remakes of older movies. I haven't seen the original "High & Low" (Going to check it out though) but a remake doesn't erase the original.
This was a good breakdown! I am a HUGE fan of Spike Lee’s films (as well as Akira Kurosawa). I can understand why Spike might have felt the need for an important story like “High and Low”, with its themes of class conflicts, social inequities, and how complicit society’s members are in propping up systems that are inherently unjust and unequal. Personally, I don’t think we should be remaking older films that are already great classics. I agree, I would love a modern day version with a similar but different story that deals with similar themes, sure. I just wouldn’t call it “High and Low”, and I definitely wouldn’t call it a remake. Spike has already tried this with Oldboy, which was already an excellent film, but the remake unfortunately just didn’t land as well.
Spike Lee? Seriously? Have we completely run out of anything that passes for talent. When you need to consider Lee as an option you should just admit you're done.
Spike Lee has terrible choices when framing and shooting certain sequences Look at the end of black clansman.. Look at inside man when they shoot the hostage.. He is also too wrapped up in politics to make anything that can stand on its own without any discussion into social politics - and that’s ok- that’s the type of director he is.. but he’s not an auteur Also - love this video - you’re extremely knowledgeable and appreciate how you’ve constructed this essay
I like that you seem to know your stuff when it comes to film. Glad I subbed
Appreciate it!

Thanks! And yeah good point. He could’ve just made a film inspired by this one instead of remaking it.
