    For fixing bent pins on old processors like that I usually use a mechanical pencil. If you retract the lead the pins fit nicely into the tip and it makes a great tool to straighten them.

    I had a DX4-100 back in the day... I ran into this limitation with tracker files as well, so I bought a Gravis Ultrasound. It used hardware to mix the samples, freeing up the CPU and providing better sound. It sounded so good :)

I’d misremembered his early stuff, or maybe I’m remembering the stuff that predated even that, as being distinctly different from the modern ones. And I hadn’t gone and watched them partly bc he kept saying he doesn’t rly like em but just leaves em up for posterity and somebody else would only mirror them etc etc.

    Adrian... I took a look at the specs for the Presario 425. I sold tons of those when I worked at Micro Center back from 1992 to 1997. They were great. You have to put the RAM in matched pairs. That's why it only shows 12MB. If you put in two 8MB SIMMS you'll get the maximum of 20MB.
    Love the videos on both channels.

      Not a bad idea. Even the 66mhz CPU I had in there was super hot

    • @SudosFTW
      @SudosFTW 3 роки тому +8

      @@adriansdigitalbasement2 It really helps, any fan will do, I ended up having to use a 60mm and bending some of the heatsink fins inward to take a screw. I'd suggest using a 50mm if you can. Aside from this, the RAM in these as I've commented before is VERY finicky, and the RAM slots themselves aren't the best. if you can get some better 30-pin slots, it would be worthwhile to replace them outright... one of mine died and it only ever sees 12MB no matter what I do. You can easily tell which slot is bad by using one good RAM stick and bringing it up to 12MB. This is definitely something to look into because the people that do have these mostly have issues with them, and it only gets worse with age. Tracing out the pins to where they go on the board would also be a worthwhile endeavor... it might also help me and a few others I've seen on vogons with a 425/433 figure out RAM issues... and maybe a fix to get more than 20MB to be detected or if it's really a BIOS limitation.
      it might be possible to get more seen if the onboard RAM is desoldered too but no guarantee on that, no one has been silly enough to try it.
      take very good care of the plastic on the back of the tray, it WILL break and you'll need to drill holes and bolt mod it.

    • @bionicgeekgrrl
      @bionicgeekgrrl 3 роки тому

      The problem with this system is it has limited clearance with the soundblaster installed and limited air intake too.
      I too thought a ram slot could well be dead. However it could be some kind of density issue with either of the sticks if they're both supposed to be 8mb. A memory testing program should be able to show what it is detecting in each socket.

    Hi Adrian! Great video about that CPU upgrade. I use Cubic Player a lot on my retro pc's as sort of a mod jukebox. I noticed you use the FPU mixer on your 486. Actually, that mixer is coded for the Pentium FPU and is very slow on 486s (also mentioned in some whatsnew.txt or something). On my 486 DX2/66, the regular mixer (devwMix) is much faster and can play 18 channels XMs, whereas with the FPU, it really can't and does the same as your machine. Maybe worth checking out. You can edit the CP.INI file or you can select a different mixer when you go to the @ drive and then to devices.

    This brings me back 20 years back! Among the many Compaq Deskpro 2000's, I had one of these Presarios in the office. And we bought a bunch of Overdrive processors, so yeah I used to have a drawer full of those chip pullers.
    In the end, I used to Presario to generate licence keys: I had a floppy disk which contained 40 licences and every time I installed this software I had to transfer a licence key from the floppy. Whereas the floppy couldn't be copied, I found out that a harddrive which contained a licence key _could_ be copied! So I setup a partition on the harddrive with this key and an autoexec.bat which would restore this partition from an image. Every time I transferred a licence key from the floppy to a pc, I would copy another key from the Presario to the floppy and restore the partition to regain this key. Limitless licence keys!

    Just FYI: CTRL+ALT+DEL *_does_* clear any configuration that you may have made through CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. The thing is, Cubic Player doesn't rely on either the BLASTER environment variable (SET BLASTER A=220 I=5 D=1 or whatever your specific values may be); it'll detect compatible sound cards when used at their default settings. Also, no drivers are needed to make it work.

It used to annoy me a lot back in the day as it often happened in either in the middle of games (at points like completing a mission or level) or when exiting the game and all you could do to fix it was reset the computer (unless you were running the game in a DOS window from Windows where you could often get away with just closing that window).

    I don't know about this VLSI chipset, but I know, that VIA on 486 does accept only 4MB modules and 16MB modules, but not 8MB. There were manufacturers, which solved this VIA issue somehow to accept at least one 8MB module. Such mainboards have 3 RAM slots and the 8MB may be installed only in one particular slot. If you install 8MB module in the wrong slot, it will be recognized as 4MB. Just an idea, I think that this compaq uses both modules, but the 8MB is recognized as 4MB, just like I know it from the VIA. So you are getting 12MB together with the on-board 4MB. You could try to pull the 8MB out and see how much memory the PC shows then. I guess, you will have 8MB. And vice versa with 8MB only installed, you also will have 8MB. 4MB on-board + 4MB from the 8MB module.....

      Here's Space Debris playing on a real Amiga. ua-cam.com/video/thnXzUFJnfQ/v-deo.html
      It was composed in 1991 and is one of if not THE best MOD files ever created. Think about computer music in 1991 -- and this could play in the background while you did other things on your Amiga. (Since it was truly multitasking.)

    I remembered the first time MP3s came out. I visited someone at his house and he was showing me and a friend this new file format. He had a Compaq tower running NT4 with a DX4-100 and it could just barely play the MP3 at a reduced bitrate. I think I tried it at home on the SX-33 I had and it would not run at all because it didn't have an FPU.

    My .MOD player of choice was MODEdit. You could play, edit and write your own MODs. One interesting feature was it could play them through the PC speaker. Pretty sure it also had options for the Disney Sound Source and Covox.

    I had an i486DX2-66 system, a clone system, that I ran my Fidonet BBS (Solsbury Hill BBS) on. I was running DESQview with two tasks...one running the BBS, and the other so I could do system maintenance, and read the BBS without having to take it down. I could even run some games that didn't suck down too much CPU, like Nethack. Fun times.

      I’ve got tons downloaded since they work flawlessly in VLC on modern systems, but even then I predominantly listen to the versions the creators have put onto SC and YT. Just easier to have them in rotation with the rest of the music that way.

    Later Cubic Player builds can be pretty heavy. Try version 1.6. It isn't as compatible, but performance should be quite a bit better! Barring that, you may have to use other, more lightweight players from the era. Try using ScreamTracker, FastTracker and Impulse Tracker themselves. I fondly remember listening to these types of files in the background while drawing the ANSI art for my BBS on my 486DX at 33mhz!

    • @adriansdigitalbasement2
      @adriansdigitalbasement2  3 роки тому +1

      Oh I'll check out the older one. I actually don't like other players of the era because they just didn't do a great job playing the Amiga files properly. I started listening to Mods on my Amiga so I expect exacting emulation or playback. :-)

    My 486 didn't work with an PR100 Overdrive, that I bought boxed, but it did run with a DX5, detecting it as 100MHz in BIOS, but reflecting proper 133MHz in benchmarks. If the socket isn't blue on the motherboard, or if the Overdrive isn't listed in specs, there is often a chance it won't run. DX5 runs with the same jumper settings as a DX2-66. DX5 absolutely needs a fan, even though half the models out there come with passive cooling. It's not enough. If it's a plastic chip, it will die without active cooling.
