Most people I've seen so far, their reaction to "Tolerate It" is almost always similar. At first, they have this expression of wondering where she's going with this and how the phrase "tolerate it" will fit in the song. And when she sings "my love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it" their expression change into something like getting stabbed in the heart right there in that moment. That's the beauty of it all.

In 'Tolerate It'... the lyric, "Use my best colors for your portrait", refers to, when she's talking to her friends/family, she's building him up as to be this spectacular husband, and using her best descriptions for him. And also... she starts the song and ends the song with the same 5 words, "I sit and watch you"... in other words, she could have ended it, "break free and leave us in ruins", but she doesn't. She's trapped and just deals with it. This is brilliant song writing. Paints such a vivid picture. Oh and the lyric, "now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life" might be one of the most painful I've heard. So. Much. Pain.
Tolerate It is in 5/4 tempo. Songs are usually in 4/4. But the percussion behind that goes quickly is representative of anxiety and heart beating fast.
The more I listen to the songs on this album the more in love with them I am. Her lyrics are so intricate & poignant. What a poet. Can’t wait for you to do “no body no crime” next!
You say you didn't interpret some of the songs on Folklore correctly but every one I've seen you do for Evermore has been spot on! On a side note: the reason you struggled to find the rhythm of Tolerate It, is because it's a 5 beat track instead of the usual 4 beat. It threw me at first too but after a few listens, the odd beat suddenly makes sense. Wonderful commentary and analysis yet again :)
I was just wishing for the next song. And here are three at once. :) I love these three. I can hardly stop between them. I don't know why. I remember listening to 'Tis the dawn season again and again. And I love Tolerate it. It's so emotional. The lyrics and the way she sings. The lyrics on Evermore are so great. It's my fave Taylor album since release. That's a long time for me. Normally it switches between her albums a lot. Great reaction and I can't wait for the next part. :)
