Gore claims to have been a rock and roller. Not hardly. She was a pop singer.

The music Lesley was releasing was considered rock and roll then. It may seem like pop to us now, but then it was much more rebellious.

Lesley was just very versatile singer
Lesley was singing pop, Rock n' Roll, soul, R&B, and jazz
some of her hit songs were considered R&B
'It's My Party' made #1 on the R&B chart.
Some of her other hits were in the top 40 on R&B.
      Other songs sound like R&B.
A lot of her singing in her songs sound bluesy.
Lesley grew up influenced by female jazz singers.
It was Lesley's jazz demos Mercury Records got Quincy Jones interested in working with Lesley as her producer and mentor.
It was jazz singing that got Lesley her first recording contract.

Gore counts jazz singers like O'Day, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday as major musical influences. "I had always loved jazz from the time I was 10 or 11, so Quincy's work was familiar to me even before I had a deal with him, since he had done arrangements for all those women," Gore says. "So when he called I knew where he was coming from."
Listen closely and you'll hear the jazz influence even in songs like "It's My Party." "There's diminished chords, augmented chords, intervals that you don't normally find in pop songs," Gore says.

She was then paired with the successful soul producers Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Thom Bell for two singles that took her into the "soul" genre: "I'll Be Standing By" and "Take Good Care (Of My Heart)". These songs did not fit the image Mercury had crafted for her, and the singles were not played. Her contract with Mercury ended after the release of "98.6/Lazy Day" and "Wedding Bell Blues" failed to make headway on the charts.
These songs sound like songs from the 1970s even though they recorded in 1968.

The fact that Lesley was one of the female singers in Legendary Ladies of Rock & Roll show says it all.
