In the 80’s I was deploying a lot then there wasn’t the selections available as today. I purchased a gerber mk2 for my lbe. Went with the USA made product for peace of mind only to be let down in Panama on deployment the first time I pulled out the mk2 to use the serrated edge to cut some saplings to hang the mosquito net the blade broke at the beginning of the serrations, you could see the end grain the metal was crystallized in appearance. Upon return to the states I called gerber to see if they would warranty it and I was told it was abuse and that wasn’t covered. I would never trust gerber for anything again. Since then I have only used K-bar. Never had to check their warranty.

Gerber and SOG have both gone to hell. They are sending everything to be made in Chins for the lowest bidder. I too used to have a Mark II , serrated back part of the blade. Never went to combat. Stayed state side. Too bad your blade broke.

I'm getting the impression from Mr. Curry that the perfect combat knife only needs a part that's safe to grip and a part that is not safe to grip.
Take it from someone in the military 99% of those cheap knives will do wonders. All these makers hype you up to believe you need a $150+ knife to do work which is a load of crap. A $50-$100 knife will work great and at the end of the day I don't want to be the one on the receiving end of a knife wether it's $10 or $400
@@kevinborish same here I carry a Gerber strongarm in the field and I still can't break the damn thing. It keeps a great edge as well as it is 75$ I recommend it

CRKT M-16 is the greatest knife I’ve ever owned. I bought it on my first deployment and it followed me for 5 more years in the army and all of its twist, turns, and deployments. Then it followed me for 6 years as a cop. I’ve used it in every way possible from prying open car doors after wrecks, opening cans, cutting down small trees, EVERYTHING. It holds an edge and has not gotten loose and “floppy”. The dual lock is annoying at first, but it stays secure.
My EDC folder is the M16-03S Classic. Absolutely love it

That Gerber shortstack is worth it's weight in gold. As an instructor, I use it all the time to fix malfunctions and help sight in ARs. I also love my Emerson sheepdog. It's been with me through multiple disaster releif efforts and hasn't let me down...only wish would be that it had a glassbreaker on the end of handle

I’ve been carrying a CRKT M-16 forever , love the blade . It’s a total workhorse.
I've been carrying a CRKT M16-01KZ (small version) for several years and have even had to deploy it defensively, once. If you put the effort into practicing with it, you can both draw it quickly and close it with one hand. On the utility side, it's been used to help rewire a trailer hitch, to carve down a saxophone reed, and your everyday such as opening boxes and cutting cordage. The best part is that it's $20, so it's not really a big deal if you do need to replace it.
Retired with 40 months of combat time ( infantry / spec ops) under my belt. My go to war knife was a SOG power plier multi tool. My first go to war knife was a swiss army classic (El Sal 1985). The key feature is adaptability to new situations and problems. If I were to do it again, I would keep a 5 inch fixed blade on my kit or bug out bag at all times for for back up, but keep a quality multi-tool (still the SOG) on body.
Brother, I've had some good luck with my SOG knives. Especially considering they weren't Benchmade prices. I gotta agree, my old swiss army knife help me square away more situations on multiple continents. I've snapped a couple of blades off but that was more operator error than failure of the knife. Knives have changed a lot, but their purposes and reasons have not.
Come to czech republic, we have literally no knife specific laws. EU tries to change that, but we're holding so far.

Never used a OTF in the Navy. As a crewchief in a Heli, we operated with the Ontario Pilot survival knife. It was sharp and worked well. Had a 5 inch blade. I backed it up with a buck 110 that had a lightweight handle. I've had the Ontario since I left in 99 and it still is sharp and no rust on it.
I love the Gerber Strongarm. I bought a black one in South Africa and had a concealed carry sheath made for it out of Kydex. Such an awesome EDC blade. Moved to New Zealand and left with in South Africa with a “bug-out” bag. It’s there for when I visit like the Glock 19 stored at a local Gun Shop for me to use in competition shooting when I go back to visit. Now I’m looking for another knife to use when we do hunting in New Zealand. Very tempted to get another Gerberg Strongarm for that.

As a knife guy I noticed what people carried down range, same as I do now. I never saw an Infidel or other OTF. I saw Benchmade Stryker, AFO and Grip. CRKT M16. Spyderco Military, Endura, Paramilitary, Delica. I don't know the ZT numbers very well but I think it was the 350 Ken Onion. (I'm just now getting into ZT so I'm learning) I also saw a ton of Smith and Wesson knives. $200 was about tops on prices. Most were in that $150 range on the high end. I broke 2 Enduras so spending a bunch of money is not an option. They also get lost frequently.
Learn to check your pocket when you get up and go... all it takes is a tap to know its there
One thing people don't know about the Gerber Strongarm sheath is the thumb push release. When you grab the knife, you simply push your thumb up against the grooved thumb place on the sheath, and the knife clicks out, in a quiet, smooth, & safe action.
The KA-BAR USMC knife needs to be updated. They could start by rounding the edges where the knife and the handle meet. With it being squared it actually produces weak points which is why that knife seems to break there under stress. If they would thicken the tang just a little it would still be a light knife, but it would add more durability in the long run. Just some random thoughts.
Late response but I think they have a few beefed up modernized version and offer that one as a classic model, honestly as long as you don’t use it in bush craft to hard you should be good, but if you want durability definitely get the strong arm or a full tang Bowie as the Kabar is a rat tang but idk they have some cool modern options fs
I run a fixed blade karambit for basically everything. It's a bit big for the small stuff, but it GETS THE JOB DONE. Plus, it's my go to in close quarters... the damage a karambit does inside the pocket? Ghastly. I love it.
My wife is a Naval Nurse. When the Navy sent her to CCCC in Texas I sent her with the Leatherman Raptor and Leatherman OHT. She said being able to use the OHT was great since her other hand was holding bandages, etc. However, she said the Raptor great for cutting rings, etc.
Btw, we're both from Utah, but stationed in Virginia. One day we'll get back home.
When I was in the army I carried a few different knives. Always had a Gerber multi tool, and I carried a ka-bar with the rubberized handle in the field. When I wasn't in the field I carried a CRKT M16 04Z. Which is actually my favorite knife I own
i carried a $20 knife in the military.. the best tactical knife is the one you don’t magically lose in the field.
i've had a gerber strongarm for like 7 years now? gutted deer, carved & split wood, everything. Just an awesome knife, never a chip and one of the coolest looking on top of that. Sheath is top notch too, regardless of what haters tell you.
mason same. I chopped through a six inch tree with it. Took a while but I beat on it pretty good. My only trouble is getting a good razor edge on it. But I’m not great at it most likely.

I love how so many of the Special Ops guys view these types of weapons just as “tools”. They don’t get caught up in the Hoopala of marketing, gimmicks, fads and trends…just the focus of function! Leave the Hoopala to gear geeks and collectors who practice their flick skills and follow metallurgy.

I have noticed same with hunters, and such woodsmen. They dont care of the latest, coolest thing. Lot of the hunters actually carry some ultra cheap stainless steel knife, or more woodsmen type something like cheap mora. They also use their knives more than military dudes, but they just seem to not care often
@@lalli8152 Eh, there are gear whores in the hunting world too. Each season they go into the woods with new packs new wardrobe new gun/bow and new knives. I cant afford that and I literally shoot a 150 dollar recurve for the last 8 years but there is definitely a huge shift in the instagram-famous hunter culture.

I just meant true woodsmen/Hunter types, but then there are these "instagram hunters" or just in General people who are quite wealthy, and go hunting once year with fancy eguipment. What i meant are the type rural places born people they genuinly dont seem to care about steel, and all that. Yeah some oldschool knife with 1095 blade you might have to sharpen more often, but actual small village low income people who hunt to just get Meat in to freezer dont just care as much as gear whores what steel their knife is. Lot of them use for example simple mora if they use newer knife
An important feature of the Gerber Strong Arm is that sheath- It's more modular than they mentioned. You can detach the web belt half of the rig (or not) and use the molle tabs on the back of the plastic half. There is a long, plastic tab you thread through the loops and lock in. You can also attach the included horizontal-oriented belt loop plate the same way. The plastic sheath grips the knife very firmly, so you may not need the web half with the retaining snaps unless you are doing airborne ops. And the knife is Doomsday tough!
Great video. I EDC a CRKT M16 because of the dual locking system. I cut off 1 and 2/3 fingers because of a liner lock failure and they were only able to attach the 1 finger back, hence, Ben 9 and 1/3. I personally, highly recommend, a knife with multiple locking systems.

I have had my CRKT M16-14ZLEK for roughly 8 years I would guess, still rolling. It has been used in warehousing, camping, hiking, everyday carry, survived a bad motorcycle accident with me. I love that thing.
34:34 That's a badass idea for a fidget toy/ stress reliever. Something with the same mechanism and operation but deploys something harmless (the toy switchblades as a kid had a comb instead of a blade)

Yep. He said he just wants his knives to work. And that he’s kinda hard on them. My bro is a LEO and I have him a Recon 1 tanto, which he uses pretty hard and loves.
I think the Gerber Strongarm is a great knife. I have 3 of them in my packs and n my truck. I have given 4 as gifts. The only thing I never have cared for is the factory angle on the cutting edge. I always hand sharpen my knives with wet stones and I add a few more degrees to the strongarm. It gets a much better bite on what you are cutting. It seems almost as if it wants to slide off the wood you are cutting with the factory edge. If you get one take my advise and reshape the cutting edge. You will be glad you did and get a much better feel and control when you cut.
If you ever want a definitive test as to if a person is a REAL warrior and not just a ‘wannabe’ if he turns around and say “haven’t a clue how much it cost OR what make and model it is , I bought it because it does what I want” you can take it he is the real deal ! 👍😉

Back in my Infantry days- way before the ready availability of all things "tactical" - most guys I knew carried a Swiss Army Knife, a Buck 110 folder, and a large fixed blade, such as a Ka-Bar, an Air Force Survival knife, or a Buck Special on the web gear. Or variants thereof. In my experience "tactical" knives got used for cutting 550 and breakaway cord, cutting foliage for camouflage, and busting open ammunition cases.....pretty mundane stuff.

I doubt anything's changed really. The Swiss Army Knife has been subbed out for a Leatherman (a functional set of pliers are easily as valuable as a knife and the random bottle opener/screw driver accessories are beyond handy for scraping carbon off things). Most guys also had a fixed blade to look the part and not much else - mine was a SEAL pup, that floated around in the bottom of my pack. It pried open ammo liners, cut paracord, sliced salami and picked my teeth.
Long story short: the real tacticool blade is a decent multi-tool.
Love that strongarm, and the boker strike.

I have the kit carson designed m16, (titanium model), with the liner lock. I have literally spent dozens of hours working the lock mechanism and deploying the blade, and it has become so natural. At the beginning it felt awkward, but that emphasizes the importance of training with your equipment.
I remember my military EDC knife was bought off a semi truck trailer that pulled into our COP one day on deployment in Afghanistan. The drivers set up a table of folding knifes and I picked up and bought a Black Benchmade Barrage w/ serrations for $80. (Which was a steal now that I think about it!)
That thing lasted me that deployment and the rest of my enlistment at 29 Palms. Man I wish I still had that knife, it got lost somewhere along the pack up and drive home. Who knows, it's probably been at the bottom of a sea bag in my storage unit for years haha.

I was actually considering a barrage, but I really don’t like the axis lock. I wanted an auto or spring assist deployment for my EDC knife and I ended up with the now discontinued Benchmade 890 Torrent. This is by far the best EDC knife I have ever owned. It’s east to open and keep super sharp. I am so glad I was able to get one when I did since they are now discontinued and hard to find. Anyone looking for a great spring assisted Benchmade with easy to care for blade steel you can’t go wrong with the 890 Torrent if you can find one.

Great job guys! I absolutely love my 06 Auto, I'm so hard on that knife but it handles the abuse very well. I use it so often I don't even realize there is a safety, like you said muscle memory has taken over :)

Gavin Allison visit Arizona some time. The Conceal carry is a “CCW”, and W stands for weapons. So it allows anything legal as open carry to now be “concealed”. Though hardly anyone gets them anymore because AZ started allowing default right to concealed carry for anyone over 21 with no felonies.
Check laws first of course, I moved back to Texas a while back and don’t know if people still carry openly into banks anymore...it may have gone and got all “civlized”

I love Texas but I’m born and raised in Arizona so I take offense when people act like Texas has to be the most gun friendly place in the USA because they have dumb ass laws that obviously would never stand in Arizona like your gun has to be in your glove box or center console and even having a ccw Arizona is the land of the free compared to Texas.

The KA BAR does not use 1095. It's 1095 Cro-van steel. Which is what Camillus made Cold Steels Carbon V knives from. Also known as Sharon Steel and 170-06. It's a noticeable upgrade from basic 1095 steel.

My EDC folder is the CRKT Craword Casper. It has the liner lock safety but its manual. Its big but caries well Love this knife!

How do you not have the Cold Steel Recon 1 on the list. I deployed to Afghanistan with this knife. Tore through car seats, opened up ammo boxes, chopped down trees, and dug holes in the ground. I put my life on the line for this knife and will do it again.

The Recon 1 in S35VN Steel is a winner for sure. Good knife steel, the lock is outstanding, and the grippy G-10 is solid. Great knife all around!

I like the Ka-bar and Gerber knife the best. The Ka-bar is one of my favorite looking knives. All those spring-loaded knives are illegal here in Canada though.
I have been carrying a cold steel Ti light for years, no not the same one I've replaced it but I have never broken one. It's not for everyone but it works well for me I have used it for every application imaginable from cutting a cast off my arm to self defense. Personally I prefer the plastic handle over the more expensive aluminum version because for me it has better grip under all conditions plus the way it opens is as fast if not faster than a automatic for me and as far as I know with no spring assist and a 4 inch blade it's 50 state legal. But that is just what works for me and why it does.

Love the auto lock unless it restricts you from openionh the knife. For tactical purposes with a folder any saferty features that keep the knife from folding up on you is an excelent feature in my opinion.

The M16 from CRKT is definitely a great knife. I have 2 versions, the M16-14D and I like the finish. Feels strong and looks excellent. However I also have the M16-13DSFG and that is my daily carry knife. Its light, compact, and feels better in the hand.
No Adamas? I can think of a ton of knives just off the top of my head I would recommend for "tactical" use way before some of the garbage you mentioned.
I have been using a ka-bar for a decent while now, at least 5 years. I really love it for it’s durability and edge retention.
Gonna weigh in on the auto lock for a sec. I have had a liner lock fail due to prying and close on my hand. So, for utility use the liner lock is a finger saver for sure!

I may be mistaken, so correct me if I'm wrong, but that Ka-Bar doesn't have a leather wrapped handle. The handle is made from several pieces of stacked leather.

I'm on my 4th CRKT M16 Big Dog, they are awesome! One negative, don't get salt water on them, they will lock open and its almost impossible to close. I love the double lock, its like a virtual fixed blade.

I had a CRKT M16 with auto lawks with me the whole time I was in the Marines. Loved that knife, I didnt even notice the secondary lock after awhile, I could open and close it one handed faster than most people with normal locks.

The CRKT M-16 safety is very good to have. I bought the 1* version before the implementation of the safety and I used this knife every day and hard, it held up and performed great but over time the liner lock began to wear and I was modifying a gas can one day and the liner lock gave way and I ended up having the knife close on my knuckles. This was after 2 years of solid use, but when I contact CRKT they they told me they added the safety for just this reason, and then they sent me a brand new knife. They back their gear.
The ring cutter on the Leatherman Shears is SO underrated.
That first Gerber knife looks like it may be a good option for bushcraft camp outings. I'll have to check it out.
Riley Denning The Strongarm is quite a capable camping knife. I used mine in the Boundary Waters a couple in years ago. It's solid, not terribly expensive, and American made so a real nice option in my opinion.

45 minutes of cool knives and here I sit with a $20 Ka-Bar Dozier I’ve had for many years. It’s super sharp and if I lose it, I’m $20 away from a new one. 😉
Dozier is a great knife. Super light. Easy to get super sharp but actually holds an edge for a good while. I have the red handle black blade version, so it looks kinda cool as well.
I’ve been reading a lot of stupid posts around here and apparently there’s not a lot of adults here. Best serviceable knives used by many are right under the $100 price point. Anything costing more money is just man jewelry. Just like bitches getting together and comparing their new department store purses, I’ve seen grown boys comparing over-priced knives. My word of advice is learn how to sharpen with stones and stropping leathers. It’s a tool, it gets used or it’s taking up pocket space!

They all worked, they were all sharp and all got the job done. But when you come across something with superior craftsmanship, insane ergonomics, great steel, and insanely smooth action…

I carried an ultratech for my entire most recent deployment to the Middle East, lots of exposure to sand and rain. Never had a single firing issue with it until I returned stateside. Once it stopped firing I just sprayed some rem oil into it, then cleared it out with compressed air and it was as good as new. No issues to this day a couple years later

Carried a CRKT M16SF for all 12 years in the USMC. Multi use from chiseling a hole in asphalt to pounding into a tree as a step. Swear by CRKT and have as my EDC to this day.
I use a crkt m21,rugged as,over 20years hard,hard use,my tactical,a Cold Steel,ghurka khukri,and a SRK,eat all those little toys 4 breakfast.
I’ve been using the m16 for 12 ish years, I trust it more than anything else I’ve run across. The auto lock gives me peace of mind like no other.
I have a CRKT knife passed down to me from my stepfather who passed away a bit ago. Love the knife, it has the autolock feature and it's ok. The regular lock feature is good enough for me personally, but it could be handy. Great knife though, I carry it every day.

Listen to Mr. Curry's comments and replay a number of times. I summarize: 1. if you have the skills, a knife will handle most applications; 2. get professional training; 3. go smaller on the knife. The skill set you want doesn't come with the knife. Very few knives ever "wear out". There is a proper technique for cutting vegetables, turkey at Thanksgiving, skinning a rabbit or deer without contaminating the carcass. "Choosing" a knife is very personal. Knowing how to use it is not a matter of genetics.
Good review...and from a military perspective (22 yrs) folders aren't really tactical in the sense most people think. I always had one on my to open things up (MREs, boxes, cut line, etc.). Multi-tools are another very handy thing to have...I have a lot of OTFs for fun and playing with, but I can't imagine ever deploying with one as I'm sure it would get all gunked up with dirt...pain to keep clean. Simple manual folder that I blast clean while cleaning weapons would be the way to go. I've got Microtechs but the tolerances would be hosed with the amount of sand/dirt they'd get in their guts. Fun, but not practical, but I'm sure I'll be buying more at some point.

You may have already checked this out, but the Cold Steel AK47 folder is one of the best bang for your buck knives out there. CTS XHP steel and a lock mechanism that is truly unique. You can deploy it with one swift motion when you take it out of your pocket. Great for self defense as well and the price is awesome at around $60, so you don't have to be afraid to use it either. Just a thought. Great video and thanks.
Avoiding trouble is the best self defense, a quick draw with your handgun is the next best.

when I served in the Navy, I was issued a Camillus Boatswain Knife with the Marlin Spike, I use to use the marlin spike as a pocket clip, this was 30 years ago.
I got a leatherman raptor for my partner who is a paramedic, she loves it.
For a great SHTF combat knife I highly Recommend these two knives #1 Gerber Strongarm #2 Cold Steel Srk. For EDC. Either a Spyderco or a good kershaw assisted opening knife at least three inch blade. "My opinion" But there definitely is other great choices.
As a medic i can verify those raptors are awesome if you’re willing to fish out the cash for them. Few of my buddies got one and they always come in clutch. Easy and nice to tuck away. Regular shears can be long and poke and slide out of molle etc. as far as knives go I didn’t see a bench made Adamas. Just picked up the fixed and folding version very nice knives. Great videos.
I bought a Gerber Flayer/Pixie set, Early issue 1960's with the slick Handles. I used the Flayer as my primary skinning/filleting tool, but I would have preferred the texture non-skid handle on the later versions.
You guys should do a video on how to properly sharpen serrations. I have my own method but i wonder if there are more efficient ways.
first, put the flat side on the belt and it will sharpen from the backside of the serrations

Darkriver Farmer if you use a whetstone just sharpen from the back at an almost completely flat angle.

Darkriver Farmer you can if you want to, but the serrations are cut to be more like a chisel edge than a typical “V” blade. You only need to hit them from the back.
