Many people say Eddard Stark was a bit slow and Catelyn Tully-Stark was very intelligent. But Catelyn fell for Her sisters secret message (which was Littlefingers) at the beginning of the Books when King Robert visited Winterfell. The note said the Lannisters poisoned Jon Arryn. Catelyn convinced Eddard that her ridiculous sister was telling the truth.
Catelyn convinced her son Rob to make a deal with Walder Frey, even though she said her father would never trust Walder Frey.
Catelyn pushed Eddard to Wed Sansa to Joffrey, without even investigating what kind of person he was.
Catelyn released Jaime Lannister, negating Rob Starks only Bargaining chip with the Lannisters for Sansa.
Almost every decision Catelyn Tully-Stark made throughout the 5 books was a complete disaster for the Starks.
And Catelyn Tully-Stark convinced Eddard Stark to be King Roberts Hand of the King. Eddard wanted to stay in the North. And Catelyn Tully-Stark Maester helped convince Eddard to be Hand of the King.
Conclusion: Intelligent(?) Catelyn Tully-Stark is the person in Game of Thrones most responsible for Eddard Stark, Rob Stark, & Rickon Starks deaths and the fall of Winterfell.

I think it's also important to state that she disregarded Lord Eddard'd orders to get back to the North and get them ready for war _before_ escalation with the Lannisters. Instead, she kidnaps Tyrion Lannister, son of Lord Tywin, a man she knew (to paraphase her thoughts) had never suffered insults againsts his family lightly ever since he was old enough to go to war (the Reynes of Castamere and House Tarbeck of Tarbeck Hall can attest to this... or not, Tywin obliterated them completely, in part for kidnapping his cousin). Catelyn Tully wasn't all that smart of a woman.

  • @pacocheung1864

Catlyn sometimes feels like a more realistic version of Cersei, she acts mostly on emotion and her motherly instincts, and although not as crazy as Cersei, her rash decisions (and trusting little finger) always cost the starks dearly in retrospect, and she is not half as smart as she thinks she is
Compared to Cersei, the main difference is that Catlyn at least has morals and character, while the Cersei is just straightup delusional, they’d still do anything for their family (and children), but for Catlyn this means her options are fairly limited. She’s just an overprotective mother / widow blundering politically due to her emotions, so we can kinda relate with her
Although in the books she’s now Lady Stone Heart, so maybe that morality has faded, and we might see some similarities between the two powerful mothers

All the Tullys were nutters - including Cat. It wouldn't take much to push her into her shadow self.
Eddard knew. He knew he could not trust his wife with the secret of Jon's parentage because she might one day pull a Lysa and turn on him.
I've also always maintained that the reason Brendon Tully was named "Blackfish" was because he was the only sane, competent one of the bunch and he was arguing with a crazy Hoster.
I could list reasons, but I'll leave it at that.

He decided to rely on the one man his wife vouch for even with his own misgivings about him. Secondly during their meetings in KL Ned gives her many instructions to follow that could put them in an advantageous position in case war brokes out against the lannisters what does she do instead? Kidnap Tyrion and have a sham trial in the vale for a crime he didn't commit. Fortunately Tyrion finds a way out but still because of her actions Jaimie attacks Ned, breaks his leg and wipe out most of his remaining northmen forcing him to have to rely on LF and Janos slynt when Robert dies ultimately sealing his fate and this is just how much she fucks ned over I could go on as far as robb is concerned too but I will stop here.

The starks thought Lyana was kidnapped. She wasn’t. She eloped. Who said she was kidnapped? WHO told the starks lyana was kidnapped? It was a lie. The biggest liar is LF, The immediate result of this was the death of Brandon Stark and Richard Stark, Ned’s older/oldest brother and father when they went to KL. Brandon was the original match of Katlyn, not Ned.
I think LF thought the starks would rebel and be all quashed leaving him with Cat.

  • @rachelclark6393
    @rachelclark6393 Місяць тому +21

I feel like as much as we talk about sansa's naivete, we often forget about catelyn's naivete. I think she's the one who fostered it and nurtured it in not only sansa but also in robb. Her southern courtesies and fantasies were not inherently valueless or wrong. But she was clearly never trained enough to handle the rougher, darker parts of politics. This makes sense from a girl who was raised by her father to marry well, not rule. She was by all accounts the 'dutiful, good daughter'; she she didn't even have any experience with getting punished.
She'd been loved and coddled her whole life. It makes sense that she had too much ignorance to safely play games with people who had been backstabbing and murdering for decades.
She wasn't used to the consequences of her actions being so deadly, either. She overestimated what she was capable of handling.
I see this sort of blind spot in robb and sansa as well, and somewhat in bran. The most southern of her kids tend to have a blindspot when it comes to other people because they've been loved and cared for by loyal men their whole lives.
So when someone new who technically owes them fealty swears to obey and be trustworthy, they dont second guess that. So long as that person is directly obeying them in their sight, they dont question that obedience. There's no, 'why does this person listen to _me_?' , it's just , 'of course he listened to me'.
And they have very little concept of malicious compliance. It's very interesting to me, because none of them are stupid or even bad at reading people. But they dont understand how fragile their positions are or how easily they can lose their inborn status. And without that status, they dont realise how little help, respect, and obedience they will get from others.
I think this is a consequence of being born with unchecked privilege. Having never even been the 'trouble child' and experiencing punishment or loss of privileges, they had no idea how fragile their power actually was and were too secure in something quite flimsy.
Jon and Arya had both experienced powerlessness in their childhoods, not in a traumatising way, but they both understood that their authority was limited and could be revoked at the whim of others. Ironically, catelyn herself was the authority most likely to exert dominance and overrule them.
Arya because she was rebellious and willful and her mother was always fighting her desire to live her life the way she preferred. And usually winning.
Jon, because he literally only had as much authority as his father let him borrow at any moment. If ned stark grew tired of jon at any point in time, jon was aware he would be out on his own with nothing. It's one reason he went to the wall.
I think you see this concept that their power is limited - that it depends on the allowances of - play out in their interactions with others once away from their family. They both cope better with being powerless or submitting to other authority figures. They both reclaim some personal power for themselves. And, they are much more aware of the potential stress fractures in loyalty and trustworthiness of the people they are dealing with.

A little off topic but still about crappy Catlyn overall...Many people blame Catlyn and Jon's bad relationship on Ned because he didn't trust his wife enough to tell her the truth about Jon's mother. But everything we know about her reckless behavior points to the fact that Ned knew his wife very well and (especially her shortcomings). He likely suspected she in spite of loving him would betray Jon's secret if the situation ever came up similar to how she freed Jamie at the expense of Rob and the war. Loving your kids is a good quality but not at the detriment of all others. Just take a look at Cersei, she has that and her check bones and she's still horrible, lol. Catlyn was always trash to me in the show and my opinion didn't change after reading the books.

I think it's neat to consider that Sansa had a lot of Catelyn's qualities when it came to being too trusting, naive and unimaginative. And well, simply too slow to catch on to what needed to be seen. Sansa said it herself, she's a slow learner, but she learns. She went from being a dumb and helpless girl to being wise to the motivations of all peoples around her and even knew ahead of time that Daenerys was bad news. I think Sansa really surpassed her mother in this way.

In fact, a lot of what littlefinger does, only benefits him for a short amount of time, or it leaves him having to start a new scheme just to maintain his role in things at all. In other words, the guy weaves a bunch of plots together that seem to not really benefit him very much overall.
