  • Between Thursday 12th January 2023 and Saturday 14th January 2023, we filmed the first of our 2023 video and slide presentation in the West Midlands, featuring the West Midlands Metro.
On Thursday afternoon, we featured all of the light rail vehicles in service that day at Wednesbury Parkway.
On all three days, the two newest trams in the United Kingdom, CAF Urbos 100s, 47 and 48 were in service though, on the afternoon of Thursday 12th January 2023, 48 failed and returned to Wednesbury Parkway and the depot mid afternoon and was not replaced.
Towards the end of part one, there are some videos taken earlier in the month by Sarah Nicholls, featuring 47 and 48 in the pouring rain.
Many of you have asked that we return to Edgbaston Village and do some more in-depth work there..... you asked..... we went!!
On Friday morning we travelled on CAF Urbos 100, 46 from Black Lake
all the way to Edgbaston Village and we made a video at the front of 46 from Library (Centenary Square) up Broad Street to the terminus. To even out the wear on the overhead at Edgbaston Village, trams with even fleet numbers proceed into the Edgbaston side of the terminus and trams with odd fleet numbers cross into the Hagley Road side of the terminus. This does not always work out especially is three even numbered trams follow each other!
Having spent some time at Edgbaston Village terminus, we made our way back down Broad Street making video and taking photographs all the way to Town Hall before a quick coffee stop at Grand Central Kitchen (the best eatery and cafe in central Birmingham). Then we set off on foot to High Street Deritend to photograph the works for the eastside extension. We also visited Lower Bull Street where the delta junction is now complete and tracks are in place as far as Dale End. The old McDonald's building is now shrouded in scaffolding and draped with sheeting in readiness for demolition to allow the tracks to continue towards Curzon Street.
On Saturday 14th January 2023, we spent a couple of hours at Black Lake to video and photograph the Saturday output.
To be noted is that, whilst the real time information at stops has really improved, you will see many trams, especially the new CAF Urbos 100s running round with no destinations, screens full of light but no destination, incorrect destinations for the direction of travel and, in some cases, incorrect destinations on one end but correct displays on the side and other end.
Whilst there is only one start place and one destination, it is, perhaps, not much of an issue but soon, there will be trams to Wolverhampton Railway Plaza as well as St.George's (we hope!!!) and, eventually trams to High Street Deritend and to Dudley so it will be imperative that someone gets their heads around destination displays.
It should also be noted that, since 39 lost its Birmingham University/Commonwealth Games allover advert, it has carried no side fleet numbers, just one on each end.
    Trams in service:
23 on test on 12th and 13th January
    31 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
    34 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
    36 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
37 in service on 13th and 14th January
38 in service on 12th and 14th January
39 in service on 13th January
    40 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
    42 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
    43 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
44 in service on 12th January
    45 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
    46 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
    47 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January
48 in service on 12th, 13th and 14th January but returned to depot mid-afternoon on 12th January with a fault and was not replaced.
We hope you have enjoyed all three of these January 2023 contributions and that you will "like" them, comment on them and subscribe to our channel in order to be kept up to date with our travels.
