I used to go out fishing with dad in his small tinny. The bloke talking about the 52 foot sea, and cutting the motor at the top of the crest, I know exactly. The small tinny would bury in the trough and I remember hoping that the bow would come back up. The flared bow of the Quinny seemed to work. After a while I just resigned to our fate.
Thought of scalloping? Yes I have. I had the Cull brothers lined up for an interview on Thursday but it fell through. But it will happen. I think Des Whayman has a bit to say about scalloping out of Kettering on this channel...

What a great documentary to watch. In my younger days I did 3 years on a shark net boat out of Robe SA called "GayboBay" it was my first experience as a sharknet deckhand, i was bye myself on deck, it was a 2-1/2 tonne trip,from 4 days. spending up to 18 days at sea around the The Coorong and Kangaroo Island I absolutely loved it, we also fished king crab. Happy healthy memories!
Bunch of legends I still have all my old Rodney Fox books from when I was a kid (could have had a crush on Valerie Taylor). It would have been amazing to be at sea back in those days and enjoy simpler times with less BS. Thanks for the upload Garry.

When i was 19 I worked long line tuna boats out of Port Lincoln in the 1980s. We ran 3000 hook lines off a 60km mainline. Everyday we caught Bi-catch was 100s of sharks. Mako we cut fillets. All other sharks we only took fins. It was a great time in my life.
Some of the smaller boats are very similar to boats used for the inshore fisheries off Newfoundland, Canada. I really enjoy your film, it’s a great time capsule of that era.

Gary , i was most intrigued by the mention of the Nautilus at the 48min . I think i now own that boat and would love to talk to that early skipper or find out who built her. She was built tight seamed or bruise planked and has had a gardner 5lw for most of her life. I bought her after she caught cray on flinders and king is.
As some one who lives in Far North Queensland , and will not eat shark ( to many choice species to eat, to me they have the same smell as hering i wont eat that either ) , this is a great video i love Australian history no matter what are where it is . From central qld .Dad was a fisherman sharks went straight back.We would not eat sharks for quids.They smelt of ammonia. Have lived in Vic for many years and find many Vic people dont eat shark any more.Earlier shark went through fish shop cookers .Most fish shops now use blue grenadier.
My best mate Billy Mitchel (wilts) to his family sailed his cuta boat out of Port Phillip Bay in the 50s and set up camp in Newhaven went on to build a concrete boat a first of its kind and his Grand son Josh Rule son of Ian Rule who skippered for the Ritchie's is still shark fishing to this day. I can remember Joshua's horse cough on his trampoline as a 5 year old, I'm confident the salty sea breeze is Josh's best medicine.
I worked on the souluna under Doug crayfishing down around the black pyramid bass strait. Good days . And a great skipper ..alot of beautiful memories on the ocean and huge seas which where the best part.
Australian smooth hound, flake, sweet william or smooth dog-shark AKA: Gummy. The Schoolie , another smooth hound AKA: tope, tope shark, snapper shark, and soupfin shark. In The pictures of the monger filleting sharks, the meat looked excellent. It would be an Easy choice between barracuda and Shark ! I would really like to have some for the table.
I guess it comes down to each person's taste in fish. I never cared much for strong tasting fish. We caught shark and it is pretty white meat but its strong. If you eat blues , mullet even king macs , sharks may be great. I preferred grouper, snapper or flounder. Spots or croaker went in the grease too. We were playing a rich man's game on a poor man's salary. We did well however ,patting my own shoulder a bit. I had the best co captain and navigator there is and He went with us every trip. Thing I'm proudest of the most is I brought every one back healthy , happy and just a bit fishy smelling. Ready to go again. Thank you Lord for that.
Old man who went all through ww2 Finn front & even before as teen taken prisoner as teen cross border raid prior to all kicking off & fought then till finish seen Leningrad yards etc . . never gave advice really except no brainers like marry a rich women & don't live by your own for too long . . both I ignored . . have a fine son still though
Great video mate, any chance you could round up the professional fisherman that was apart of the Yellowtail Kingfish Trapping in NSW? Would love to hear their stories compared from back then to now. I have heard it was not uncommon for 15-20kg fish everyday out of Sydney. That unfortunately is long gone.

My last shark trip was 7.5 ton and $4500 for three days at sea 1988
Even the couta back in those days where huge you don’t see them that big anymore the fishing back in those days would have been awesome
