I can’t imagine being adrift at sea for days, weeks even months. I had a history teacher in college who shipwrecked and drifted for 72 days before being rescued. His wife died just a short time after and his brother-in-law died shortly after being rescued. There is a book about his experience called “Lost!” by Thomas Thompson.
What an incredible story of Australian History thank you for sharing Mick Doldmein your story of survival, team work, pure utter strength and courage, friendship, true love and the miracle of an ending . These are the stories Chanel 7 should be very proud to share and such a wonderful tribute to these brave Australians. This is what Australian broadcasting is about.
Totally agree! They should make this compulsary course material all over the world! Why they have not yet erected a statue for Mick, his wife and 7 News Spotlight is beyond me!
Very good for all of us, even people today who did not know then about it, to hear what they did and how they looked after each other. And to hear about the halucinations and other mental troubles they endured. Thank goodness for the 18yr old who could think for all of them and make clothes and still walk out and talk sense.❤❤

What a story!! Aussies are so STRONG!!! So HAPPY YOU SURVIVED!!!! Very brave men, all!! So sorry for the 3 men that did not survive, condolences to their families and friends. Love from BC Canada!
Amazing story but could you imagine how devastated the families of the men who had died were after getting your hopes up that the crew was all found safe? I need to find out after that huge relief that they were in fact already dead absolutely heartbreaking

@davidv8998 what is your issue with mick and joanie ? Like why are you attacking people you don't know who have both gone through something so traumatic?
A true story of superlatives! Mindblowing, gutwrenching, heartbraking, heroic AND so well told. This deserves a Pulitzer Prize. And how about those socks! Special mention to the make-up crew. You did a hell of a job on Mick’s wife! I’m sure it wasn’t easy nore cheap.
What an amazing story and so well told (Oscar material). Being visited by extraterestrials while in the raft is mindblowing. Mick was lucky to have been able to steal those socks though. What would have happened without those socks...Only god knows. Good job by the make-up crew as well. Mick's wife looks absolutely smashing.
Wow, my favorite stories are those who have survived shipwreck. I love the water, I'll go out, but it terrifies me with it's power. This story made me weep. I am so glad Mick shared it with us. Some stories need to be told, who have suffered an ill fate, and their courage. My father was drafted into the North Korean conflict, he served as a sergeant in the front-lines, but would never speak of his experience. I am 61, and my mother told me that the North Korean's would strap dynamite around little children, and send them running into their camps on the frontlines, to be blown up themselves, and his friends. No one has ever spoken of these things. Some things are too horrific to speak about. I wish I could have known what he experienced. He died an alcoholic. I can't blame him. A working, thriving one, but when you use it to numb the pain, it will kill you.
Very good story it was well told and filming was one of the best and even at one point it brought tears to my eyes which doesn't happen very often. This is also the first time I am hearing about this story, I'm sorry about their friends and shipmates and I know about the bonds that the shipmates have for I spent almost 20 years at sea on a Canadian Research Vessel. I would like to know these guys and my condolences to the family and friends of the shipmates who didn't make it
@@auto_5 That much water coming in to sink a ship would mean a large hole ... the porthole open didn't help but would only have allowed water in when ship was on its side already. While not mandatory for all recreational boats, EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) are required by law on certain types of vessels depending on their operation and location, particularly for commercial fishing vessels, passenger ships operating offshore, and vessels navigating in international waters; making them essentially mandatory for many commercial maritime operations today.

Boat went east or west it’s not rocket science, even in the 70s to send some sort of boat around to check for debris. I know boats sink, I grew up on boats. They seem to have had a good honest watch, someone was awake, the men got off. They had a proper raft, fortunately decided not to keep the dead aboard. But? Let other countries know you have a boat missing, so they can keep an eye out fishing (with the penguins). Glad epirbs and other GPS devices have come into more common usage. Seeing the Egyptian diver holiday boat where people drowned just recently as their boat suddenly capsized in the night. It seems as if possibly boat safety does not change. The lady who spent 37 hours alone in an air pocket. At least they found her boat. Although good to see inflatable life rafts still going strong.
