- Produced in 1987.. a look back at the history of the Santa Anita Handicap and some of it's memorable winners..
The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses four years old and up [1], and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during the winter racing season. The ten furlong Santa Anita Handicap offers a purse of $750,000.
The first race was held in 1935, just months after the track opened in late 1934, and was for three-year-olds and up until 1969. The Santa Anita Handicap instantly became one of the nation's top races because it offered a minimum purse of $100,000, then a staggering amount for a horse race. In its early years, the race was most commonly referred to among horsemen and racing media as the "Hundred-Grander." Another nickname for the race dating back to that time, "The Big 'Cap," is still in regular use.

Thank You for letting me relive my favorite memories, my dad worked for the Sun Telegram news paper so we went alot (& whenever he went he knew better than to leave me behind). I still love horse racing and I still follow the races today although on the east coast. Very sad about Hollywood & Sanat Anata park.
.
I know it's quite randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to stream new tv shows online?
@Eric Logan I would suggest flixzone. You can find it on google :)

My choice for best horse race announcer of the last century. I listened to Joe Hernandez from February 1946, until he passed.

Love Spectacular Bid!
The Santa Anita Handicap, or the Big Cap as it is commonly known, is one of the truly great races on the US racing calendar. The prestigious Grade 1 event has in it's time carried a total purse of $1 Million, with at least £600,000 to the winner. It was the premier race of the winter/spring season. The only competition came from the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream. However in recent years the Santa Anita Handicap has lost some of it's prestige due to the creation of the Dubai World Cup, offering a substantially bigger purse. A great shame in many ways that connections of top horses bypass this historic race, considering the likes of triple crown winner Affirmed, Kentucky Derby Winner Spectacular Bid, and not forgetting the likes of Seabiscuit, and John Henry whose names are on honours board.
I saw Spectacular Bid set the still standing world record for 1 1/4 miles. But he did that Hollywood Park. Many think he was the greatest racehorse in history. Hard to argue.
It was at Santa anita in the 1980 strub stakes.
John Henry was the best
Sad this race hardly draws any good horses anymore.
The Seabiscuit story is great and to comeback at that level after an injury a miracle. But Kayak was going to eat his lunch down the stretch in the 1940 big cap if the Jock let him.
