Your summary is interesting, but it also overlooks or errs on a number of issues. First, some of your pictures intended to be of surrounding mountainous territory are incorrect. Some certainly are of Apache Pass--but some are, most definitely, not. Apache Pass is in one of several "island in the sky" type mountain terrains. These are smaller mountain ranges separated by extensive dry plains. Apache Pass was important because it was the necessary route through one of these mountain "islands", necessary because it had water and most of the surrouding plains did not. Eventually Apache Pass became a Butterfield Stage route. The water source, which you mentioned, is perhaps 1/4-1/2 mile from the fort itself and the water still flows today. Second, the confrontation with Cochise was preceded by several years of harmonious, even friendly, relations between Cochise and Tom Jeffords, the local trader and agent and traded who lived along the pass. (Cochise and Tom Jeffords were "blood brothers" in that famous story of other Western legend. The foundation of Jeffords' building is still visible a couple miles from Fort Bowie. Third, the confrontation with Cochise arose because an altogether different Apache group from much farther north captured a white settler boy. (There were at leasst five entirely different and independent Apache groups scattered in very different parts of Arizona and New Mexico. Cochise and his Chiricahua group were the southern-most group in the US.) Bascomb arranged a meeting with Cochise and accused Cochise of the kidnapping. Cochise, apparently, had no knowledge of the kidnapping and certainly had no part in it. (The boy was found and identified many years later. He eventually served as a USArmy scout and, I seem to recall, was involved in the tracking of Geronimo. Geronimo was from still an entirely different and unconnected Apache group.) Bascomb held Cochise and Cochise's wife (which you did not mention). (Cochise's wife was the daughter of Mangus Coloradus, another great Chiricahua Apache leader.) Cochise escaped through a hole in his "prison" tent. He captured hostages and asked to trade for his wife and friends. Bascomb refused and the result was as your story continues from there--except for a two tidbits that may interest some. 1) Many of the soldiers were Buffalo soldiers, including the very unusual example for that day of one black officer. 2) The Fort Apache commander requested and was denied the opportunity to upgrade to post to make winter living conditions better. I wonder why he was denied, but have never learned the reason. All of this information is available in numerous historical works about that time and place--but it's also all available at the Fort Bowie historical site and museum.

Seems you have your facts wrong. They murdered his family members in the ⛺️ they were in that he slashed his way out of so he Chochise wouldn't be murdered in the tent too!!!!
