  • Join me for a walking tour of Donostia San Sebastián, Spain. I was surprised that this Spanish beachfront city felt like a traditional English Victorian resort, with its ornate railings, street lights, and spa-like buildings.
I walk from the west end of Ondaretta Beach to the eastern end of Zurriolako Hondartza, a beach with impressive waves popular with surfers.

    DONOSTIA SAN SEBASTIAN
San Sebastián, also known as Donostia in Basque, is a coastal city in northern Spain's Basque Country. It is situated on the Bay of Biscay, close to the French border, in the province of Gipuzkoa. The city is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, urban beaches, and vibrant cultural scene.
San Sebastián is divided into several distinct districts, each offering unique attractions. The oldest town (Parte Vieja) is the most notable area, famous for its narrow streets lined with pintxo (tapas) bars.
Adjacent to the Old Town is La Concha Beach, one of Europe's most famous urban beaches. It is known for its crescent shape and fine golden sand. Another notable beach is Zurriola, which is popular among surfers.
The city boasts a mix of architectural styles, from Belle Époque buildings to modern structures. The Buen Pastor Cathedral and the City Hall, housed in the former casino, are prime examples of the city’s historic architecture.
The Peine del Viento (Wind Comb) sculptures by Eduardo Chillida at the western end of La Concha Bay offer a modern artistic touch.
San Sebastián is also a cultural hub, hosting several prestigious events. The San Sebastián International Film Festival, held annually in September, attracts filmmakers and actors worldwide.
The city is also known for its jazz festival, Jazzaldia, and the Musical Fortnight, which features classical music performances.
One of San Sebastián's highlights is its culinary scene. The city has one of the highest densities of Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide, including the acclaimed Arzak, Mugaritz, and Akelarre.
The city’s location offers easy access to natural attractions, including the Monte Igueldo, which provides panoramic views of the city and the bay. The nearby Monte Urgull, with its historical fortifications and a statue of Christ, is another popular spot for hiking and exploring.
San Sebastián is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The San Sebastián Airport is about 20 kilometres from the city center. The city’s public transportation system includes buses and a modern tram network, making navigating easy.
