  • Here is a Phil Woods Transcription for you on "Watch What Happens" performed together with pianist Michel Legrand live at "Festival International de Jazz in Montreal 2001. If you're looking for that fat Phil Woods sound, check out Theo Wanne his NY Bros 2 Mouthpieces: theowanne.com/...
This is one of the better solo's to study bebop lines and phrasing, as well as the melody interpretation which was also transcribed for this one.
This is a guest transcription from a great and dedicated Sharp Eleven saxophone student, who is a great supporter of the channel from the earliest days, Cy Schmidt. He conducts a big band and plays lead alto in it, as well as havin a great sound on the harmonica! This was his transcription with supervision and some adaptions by Sharp Eleven Music, enjoy!
Link to original video this was transcribed from (Phil Woods starts at 1:28): • Michel Legrand & Phil ...

If you're looking for that fat Phil Woods sound, FIRST practice long tones focus on your air support, embouchure and throat position working properly together. If you like to dive deeper into that, we just released our brandnew online school at www.sharpelevenmusic.com where this and much more gets discussed. It includes full saxophone courses, guitar by Timothy, and eartraining is on it's way. There is also plenty free stuff (transcriptions and study material) to check out.
But SECONDLY, there is a fourth factor in getting that huge sound like Phil Woods: gear. And as you might know, both of us are really no gearheads, we kinda avoid spending too much time on it. However, you can approach it like us if you made at least 1 time in your life a smart choice in gear, on saxophone for sound that would be mainly the mouthpiece.
If you love that fat Phil Woods sound, check out the Theo Wanne NY Bros alto mouthpiece, which is based on the old Meyers Phil played, but hugely improved: theowanne.com/?affiliate_id=28
This is an affiliation link, and is the first one on gear you'll see on our channel because I really believe in the quality Theo Wanne provides. He has also very interesting articles on how mouthpieces function and work to help you out chosing the best ones for you. You don't pay any more of course, but you would help this channel out a bit by using this link.
If you have any questions regarding Phils playing here our sound shoot :)

The energy in this solo is beyond belief, and --if I can phrase it this way-- it transcends jazz as we know it and goes out and up into the clouds and heavens. Those lines over those chromatic chords are just head-exploding insane. Omg more people should know this solo. It's just fantastic. I could understand why Michel Legrand was going nuts during it!

108 to the end is just magical. Simple yet effective the way he quotes that line has the chords progress.

Chris Potter in his younger years sounded a lot like this. I guess Woods was one of his influences

Working on playing this work of art right now. 1:38 is nightmarishly difficult to perform at tempo though.... (195-205 bpm??)

Yeah, but I guess you can get a lot out of it by simply doing it at half the speed. It's basically some very ingrained vocabulary in Woods playing which got overtime so comfortable that he could do it at that speed. No rush, take it even 1/3th of the speed and you'll have some great new lines 😃
